The advent of digital dermatology, pushed forward by increasingly innovative and sophisticated digital tools — not only smartphones and video calling apps but artificial intelligence — is enabling a growing number of global brands to diagnose, prescribe and produce bespoke creams via virtual consultation rooms. I tried Klira, a digital dermatology service co-founded in 2021 by British dermatologist Dr. Emma Craythorne. From Simon Ourian MDWhile digital dermatology makes it possible to access the expertise of people who might otherwise be out of your price bracket or zip code, there are inevitable drawbacks and limitations to using a digital dermatologist exclusively. “Although it was not a total transformation, my skin did get a bit better and I would recommend the digital dermatologist route,” she said.

A generic high blood pressure drug has become the most commonly prescribed oral medication to treat acne in women, overtaking antibiotics and birth control pills, a new report from Epic Research shows. Prescriptions for oral antibiotics — previously the go-to pill for acne — decreased from 41% to 27% in the same time period. While the drug was approved as a high blood pressure medication in 1960, it was in the 1980s that some doctors began prescribing it to women for acne. Birth control pills can also be an effective treatment for this type of acne, and indeed, can be prescribed by dermatologists for this reason. However, prescriptions of birth control for acne also fell from 2017 to 2023, Epic Research found.

“Xist is a very long RNA, 17,000 nucleotides long, or letters, and it associates with approximately almost 100 proteins,” Chang said. Chang wondered whether the clumps of protein molecules that arise when Xist connects with the X chromosome were a trigger for autoimmune disease. The experiments weren’t designed to show whether Xist or the related proteins cause autoimmune disease in the animals. The samples from patients with autoimmune disease produced higher levels of autoantibodies in reaction to proteins associated with Xist, the researchers found. Plus, environmental factors play a big role in autoimmune disease.

Kim Kardashian recently stirred up controversy for having a tanning bed in her office. Light therapy can help with psoriasis, but tanning isn't the same thing and increases cancer risk. Kardashian spoke out on X (formerly Twitter) after Allure critiqued the tanning bed featured in her brand SKKN's office, which she showed off in a recent TikTok tour. Tanning beds primarily use UVA light, which causes not only damage, but also skin aging (including the development of wrinkles) and increased risk of skin cancer, according to the MD Anderson Cancer Center. The World Health Organization classified tanning as carcinogenic, or cancer-causing, and studies suggest it can increase your odds of developing certain types of skin cancer by 58%.

Yet in Belgium, doctors in Antwerp are “sounding the alarm” about the spread of bedbugs from Paris, according to The Brussels Times. Colleen Oakley, a bestselling novelist in Atlanta, told CNN Travel she would “absolutely not travel” to Paris right now based on her “awful” experience with the creepy crawlies in 2006. How to Take Care of Your Skin in the Fall and Winter
  + stars: | 2023-09-25 | by ( Anna Maltby | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As the outside air cools and the heat starts to crank on indoors, you may notice your skin becoming flaky, maybe even a bit itchy. Welcome to fall and winter. When temperatures drop, the air gets drier — both indoors and outdoors — and moisture gets pulled from the lipid barrier. With less hydration, the turnover of skin cells is impaired and they start to clump together, which people can experience as dry, flaky or even scaly skin, Dr. Craiglow said. Some are more susceptible to developing dry skin in cooler weather, particularly older adults and those with eczema, said Dr. Jeffrey Weinberg, a clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Experts say these infections don’t go away on their own and can easily spread from person to person without treatment. “Fungus tends to be greedy,” said Dr. Boni Elewski, chair of the department of dermatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. CNN —Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, who died September 1, had Merkel cell carcinoma, a skin cancer that’s diagnosed in fewer than 3,000 people in the US every year. Merkel cell carcinoma happens when something makes them grow out of control. Merkel cell carcinoma typically shows up on a person’s face or neck or in other areas that are often exposed to the sun, like the arm. A Merkel cell carcinoma may be mistaken for a cyst, but cysts can be painful while these spots often are not. The American Cancer Society says cancer is detected in the lymph nodes of 1 in 3 people who have Merkel cell carcinoma.
