No matter the poll, voters consistently say that the cost of living is their top concern, usually followed by threats to democracy, immigration and the economy in general. Female voters are backing Harris by 14 points, while Trump is winning men by 16 points, according to the latest NBC News poll. The October NBC News poll showed Harris leading Trump by 5 points, 45% to 40%, on who better represents change. Yet he isn’t all that impressed with Obama, the nation’s first Black president, nor Harris, who would be the second. “He’s only gaining support with Black men.”Democrats have been unnerved by recent polls that show Harris’ numbers sagging among Black voters, particularly young Black men.

Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk has forcefully ramped up his efforts to help re-elect former President Donald Trump, raising eyebrows across the political world and inviting questions about the legality of some of his tactics. Meanwhile, news reports have chronicled some of the issues facing America PAC, a political action committee funded by Musk to help boost Trump in the home stretch of the campaign. The two men rallied together earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the former president survived an assassination attempt over the summer. The giveaway plan was met with immediate pushback from some election law experts. Rick Hasen, a law professor at UCLA and an NBC News election law analyst, wrote in a post on his website Saturday that the payments were “clearly illegal.”“Essentially what you’re doing is you are creating a lottery.

The ads end with the tag line: “Kamala is for they/them; President Trump is for you.”These efforts come amid the backdrop of a massive gender gap between the two candidates. SUNLAND PARK, N.M. — In each of the last two summers, Laura Mae Williams, who recovers bodies for the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office, has had to visit the U.S.-Mexico borderlands multiple times a week. The Medical Investigator’s Office, part of the University of New Mexico Health System, used to recover only a handful of bodies a year. First responders, elected officials and advocates in New Mexico attribute the spike in deaths largely to Texas Gov. Officials, including the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office, also blame smugglers for the deaths, noting that in many cases they abandon people who fall behind — but only after they take their phones. “It raises an important question,” said Dr. Heather Jarrell, the chief medical examiner at the Medical Investigator’s Office, whose office marks the deaths as accidental.

The US has seen its share of overall chip production fall from 37% of the world's supply in 1990 to 12%. While many factories remain under construction, the federal funding has already helped boost US chip production. But the surveys also reveal a noticeable gap in support between the pro-abortion rights amendments and the Democratic presidential and Senate candidates who are campaigning on a pro-abortion rights platform. Pro-abortion rights ballot measures won in every state where they appeared on the ballot, including conservative-leaning ones, in the 2022 and 2023 elections. Similarly in Arizona, a proposed amendment to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution has clear majority support. In Montana, there’s little evidence that the presence of an abortion rights amendment has had a major effect on the race between three-term Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy. For example, in Missouri, public polling indicates broad support for a constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights, while Republican Sen. With four weeks to go until Election Day, the 2024 polls continue to show a presidential race that remains on a knife’s edge — and well within the margin of error. It’s also true in the polls of the battleground states that will ultimately decide the presidential contest. Harris and Trump are essentially tied, perhaps with a slight lean toward Trump, in the Sun Belt states of Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina. And this is a fundamentally different race than the one that existed before President Joe Biden stepped aside from his re-election campaign and endorsed Harris. In Week 5, scoring returned — and, in several cases, it happened in some of the oddest and most unexpected ways. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ Tank Bigsby was first hit 14 yards from the end zone by one Indianapolis Colts tackler and appeared to be wrapped up by another at the 11. Yet, with two teammates pushing him forward, he wound up with a touchdown instead of a short gain, a score that became part of Jacksonville’s first victory. Two minutes before halftime, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love dropped back into his end zone and was shoved with two hands — but not sacked for a safety — by a chasing Rams defender. Officially, he went 101 yards, 18 yards longer than Seattle’s previous franchise record for a fumble return.

Source: Brian McNoldy; University of Miami Upper Ocean Dynamics LabSee the Ocean Heat Fueling Hurricane Milton, in One ChartThe energy that supercharged Hurricane Milton into a Category 5 storm on Monday came from the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, which have been abnormally warm not just at the surface, but at depth, too. The seas absorb most of the extra heat that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses trap near Earth’s surface. So the same human-caused forces that have been bringing abnormal heat to towns, cities and landscapes are helping to warm the oceans. Ocean heat content is a metric that captures the amount of thermal energy stored from the sea surface down through the ocean depths. “It’s felt like an entire hurricane season has taken place over the past few weeks,” Dr. Wood said.

A billionaire minimum tax is one of several proposals pushed by Democrats in recent years to tax the rich. Harris has specifically called for raising the top tax rate on millionaires with long-term realized capital gains from 20% to 28%. Harris’ proposal to increase the tax rate on realized capital gains to 28% would apply to taxpayers with income over $1 million. How a tax on unrealized capital gains would workLet’s discuss how a billionaire minimum tax – which is, on a basic level, a tax on unrealized capital gains – would impact a homeowner. If passed, a billionaire minimum tax – an unprecedented tax on income not yet received – would likely face many legal challenges.
