.SPX mountain 2022-10-12 The S & P 500 has gained more than 60% during this bull market. However, prior bull markets have shown a tendency to lose a little steam in their third year. Bank of America research showed that 10 prior bull markets for the S & P 500 had an average return of -2% in months 25 to 36. Another thing to keep in mind is that even positive third years for bull markets tend to be bumpy. Of course, a slump for the S & P 500 could be an opportunity for small-cap stocks to catch up .

Travel spending among American households continues to outpace its pre-pandemic levels, a trend underpinned by a zeal for international trips, according to new Bank of America research. "A key part of travel momentum lies within vacationing abroad," Taylor Bowley and Joe Wadford, economists at the Bank of America Institute, wrote in a note Wednesday. Overall, travel spending is down slightly from 2023, yet it remains "much higher" than 2019 — up by 10.6% per household, they wrote, citing Bank of America credit and debit card data from January to mid-August. About 17% of Americans said in June that they intended to vacation abroad during the next six months, up from roughly 14% in 2018 and 2019, according to a recent Conference Board survey. "I do expect the demand to continue," said Hayley Berg, lead economist at travel site Hopper.

These movers are disproportionately higher-income, a new Bank of America report found. Las Vegas and Phoenix are the only Western cities Bank of America analyzed that had population increases compared to first quarter 2020. Housing costs are a major reason people are leaving West Coast cities for the Sunbelt. But many Sunbelt cities have more permissive land-use and zoning regulations than their coastal counterparts, meaning they're often better equipped to keep up with rising demand by building more homes. Both West Coast and Sunbelt cities that aggressively restrict housing construction will likely continue to face affordability crises.

Tesla sales in China have slumped – and it's faltering economy may not be the reason why, according to Bank of America. That's because demand for Tesla rival BYD rose 4%, while Tesla deliveries dropped 31% month-over-month in July. It suggests demand for Teslas in China is waning in the face of local competition. In a recent note, the bank highlighted Tesla Model 3 and Model Y deliveries in China dropped by 31% month-over-month in July, while its largest EV competitor in China, BYD Auto, grew 4% month-over-month. Tesla has repeatedly dropped prices of its vehicles over the past year, in a bid to undercut rivals and boost market share.
