On a recent trip to Paris, I took a 40-minute train ride to enjoy delicious wine in Champagne. It's my favorite French wine region, so I love spending a day in and around Reims. As oenophiles know, true Champagne can only be produced in the Champagne region of France. Luckily, it happens to be the closest wine region to Paris, making it perfect for day trips or weekend getaways. It also happens to be my favorite wine region, so I try to visit whenever I'm nearby.

GOOD READS For any oenophile, these memoirs offer a view into winemaking that can enhance appreciation not only for the authors’ own wines, but for wine itself. Illustration: Francesco ZorziMAKING WINE and writing books demand quite different talents, and yet in three new memoirs, veteran wine producers establish themselves as authors of distinction. As varied as the winemakers who wrote them and the wines they make, these books all offer fascinating glimpses into winemaking as a business and a way of life. They’re gifts oenophiles can savor well beyond the holiday season. ‘From Bordeaux to the Stars: The Reawakening of a Wine Legend’ by Jean-Michel Cazes (Academie du Vin Press)The ever-smiling, ever-globe-trotting Jean-Michel Cazes, proprietor of Château Lynch-Bages, was to Bordeaux what Robert Mondavi was to Napa Valley: an emissary not just for his own estate but for an entire region.

If you’re thinking of bequeathing a bottle from the year a loved one was born, investigate what sort of vintage it was before you invest. Illustration: Nick LuHAVE YOU EVER tasted a wine made the year you were born? Some people will buy a wine for that reason alone. Purchasing “birth-year” wines for loved ones has long been a tradition among oenophiles. But I wonder if it is (still) a good idea, or a relic of an earlier era when wines weren’t styled to be consumed right away, as most are today.

YOU WOULD THINK a wine named after a saint who banished a dragon might have some cachet, and yet the wines of Saint-Verán aren’t so much sought-after by most oenophiles. Perhaps it’s because the Saint-Véran appellation was only created in 1971. Certainly, it is overshadowed by its more-famous neighbor Pouilly-Fuissé, yet drinkers would do well to pay attention to the wines of Saint-Véran, some of the best deals in white Burgundy now.
How to Choose the Right Wine Gift

IT’S THE SEASON of giving, and wine lovers know what that means: You’re likely to give, and to get, a bottle of wine. I always hope for the former, and I’ve been mostly—though not entirely—successful with the wines that I’ve brought to houses of both strangers and friends. I’ve given wines that I considered interesting or fun, or that pair well with food; sometimes they’re just wines that I like to drink (Champagne). How do other wine lovers choose the bottles that they bring along? When I asked oenophiles, both pro and amateur, I heard some good stories and a few useful tips.
The toy giants realize that many adults aren’t just looking to buy toys for their children, grandkids, nieces and nephews. Companies like Hasbro (HAS) are increasingly looking to adults (and not just parents) as buyers for nostalgic products, whether its gifts for older loved ones, friends or for themselves. Toy companies and other collectibles makers clearly recognize that grown-up shoppers are still invested in the brands that they played with as kids. Mattel (MAT) is hoping to cash in from more adults buying toys for other grown-ups as well. “The Bear Cave has more lighthearted products for adults,” Price John said, including some bears drinking a glass (or bottle) of wine.
