‘Filter bubbles’ and democracySometimes the dangerous effects of social media are clear. As a result, they mostly share and see stories from people on their own side of the political spectrum. That “filter bubble” of information supposedly exposes users to increasingly skewed versions of reality, undermining consensus and reducing their understanding of people on the opposing side. “The ‘Filter Bubble’ Explains Why Trump Won and You Didn’t See It Coming,” announced a New York Magazine article a few days after the election. Changing information doesn’t change mindsBut without rigorous testing, it’s been hard to figure out whether the filter bubble effect was real.

Nearly 30 years of protectionsA view of the U.S. Supreme Court on February 21, 2023 in Washington, DC. The Supreme Court isn't the only one reviewing Section 230; Congress and the White House have also proposed changes to the law, though legislation to update Section 230 has consistently stalled. For skeptics of the tech industry, and critics of social media platforms, more lawsuits would imply more opportunities to hold tech companies accountable. Allowing the courts to scrutinize the tech industry more would bring it in line with other industries, some have argued. Even a 'like' could trigger a lawsuitLiability could also extend to individual internet users.
Tesla cofounder Martin Eberhard said Elon Musk used to "scream" if he was not cited in Tesla stories. Musk didn't return requests for comment. In an interview with Insider, Eberhard said he and Musk were "congenial" until his last few months at the company. Meta ended its contract with an outsourcing firm, Sama, that moderated graphic content in Africa. In August, Insider investigated the labor conditions for TikTok's content moderators working for Majorel in Morocco — the hub of ByteDance's Middle East and North Africa content moderation operation. Social media companies claim to use sophisticated algorithms that help clean up people's feeds, but this covers up the grim reality of how nearly every social media company works. Experts like Foxglove Legal have been calling on social media companies like Meta to bring their global content moderation workforce in-house. It may be the only way to make sure handling the worst elements of social media is shouldered by those who are truly accountable to the company and its users.
Meta reports third-quarter earnings on Wednesday after the bell. Add it up, and Meta is expected to post its second straight quarter of declining sales. Meta is trying to make Reels more attractive to advertisers and has announced new ad formats intended to give businesses enhanced options for promoting their products through short videos. Most concerning are the user figures in the U.S. and Canada, its biggest region for revenue. In the second quarter of 2022, Meta counted 197 million daily active users in those two North American countries, down from 198 million in the same quarter in 2020.
Beyond Catastrophe A New Climate Reality Is Coming Into View By David Wallace-WellsYou can never really see the future, only imagine it, then try to make sense of the new world when it arrives. (A United Nations report released this week ahead of the COP27 climate conference in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, confirmed that range.) A little lower is possible, with much more concerted action; a little higher, too, with slower action and bad climate luck. There were climate-change skeptics in some very conspicuous positions of global power. New emissions peaks are expected both this year and next, which means that more damage is being done to the future climate of the planet right now than at any previous point in history.
When asked why they don't use Google as much, the Gen Zers interviewed by NBC News had a simple answer: They prefer visual platforms. "Our goal with Search is to provide people the most relevant and useful information available," according to the post. "People have more ways to search for information than ever before—and increasingly this is happening outside the context of only a search engine." According to Raghavan, Google is testing some newer features. If Google doesn't evolve, some believe TikTok will ultimately surpass it as the top search tool.
Mamadi Doumbouya for The New York Times Talk Jerrod Carmichael Was Scared of Coming Out. Anything other than “I’m gay” was me dodging. Everything was actually “I’m gay.” But it’s still dodged. The working title of “Rothaniel” was “I’m Gay.” There are certain phrases that have no substitute. Like “I’m gay” or telling someone “I’m sorry.” But people can live in cognitive dissonance.
