An estimated 10,000 people marched through Rotorua, about 280 miles north of Wellington, New Zealand police said in a statement. The ACT New Zealand party, a junior partner in the governing center-right coalition government, last week unveiled the bill, which it had promised during last year’s election. Coalition partners the National Party and New Zealand First are only supporting the legislation through the first of three readings. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon reaffirmed on Thursday that his National Party would not support the bill’s progress beyond the first reading.

Amid a presidential loss and hand-wringing over the wreckage, congressional gains for Democrats in New York state are one of the small bright spots shining out from the party’s bleak results. The Democratic Party lost five competitive House races in this blue state two years ago — the exact margin by which they lost the House majority. Here are five takeaways on the voters Trump won and what it means moving forward:The Latino realignmentA trend with the potential to remake the American political landscape is the huge shift in Latino voters toward Trump. Trump’s 1.5-point win in Osceola County flipped a location that President Joe Biden won by 14 points four years earlier. Trump’s performance similarly improved in Orange County, home of Orlando, where Biden won by 23 points in 2020 but Harris won by just 5.6 points this year. Trump’s gains are explained in part by his appeals to Black men, and his efforts to reach out to Arab American voters. Harris won by 10 points and 85,000 votes — short of the 14-point, 114,000-vote win Biden had notched there in 2020.

The total bill for ad spending in the 2024 election hit almost $11 billion, a new record and a substantial increase from the $9 billion spent in 2020. That's according to AdImpact, a firm that tracks political ad spending. The total is in line with the firm's 2023 projection that 2024 would see more ad spending than ever before. Overall, the Democratic campaign and pro-Democratic outside groups spent almost $1.8 billion, while the Trump campaign and pro-Republican outside groups spent $1.4 billion. A relatively short list of competitive gubernatorial races this election cycle drew almost $530 million, including races held in 2023.

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks has won Maryland’s Senate race, NBC News projects, defeating popular former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and becoming the first Black woman elected to represent the state in the Senate. It also means that, for the first time in history, Maryland will have a Black senator, governor and mayor of its largest city, Baltimore. Hogan could never quite replicate the support he received from Democrats as governor in his Senate campaign. In Hogan, many Marylanders saw a Republican who represented an increasingly rare version of the party prior to Trump’s takeover.

Should Harris prevail, she would face problems in confirming members of her Cabinet and judicial nominees, and the GOP Senate could thwart her domestic plans. CNN —Sarah McBride, a Delaware state senator, will win her state’s at-large US House seat, making her the first out transgender person to serve in Congress, CNN projects. Despite running in a reliably blue state, McBride emphasized her work leading a bipartisan push to pass paid family and medical leave in the state. McBride, a former spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ rights group, has made history throughout her public life. Four years later, McBride became the first transgender person to address a national party convention, when she spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. And in 2020, McBride became the first out transgender person elected to serve in a state Senate, when she was elected to represent a seat in northern Delaware.

CNN —Texas Sen. Ted Cruz will win reelection to a third term, CNN projects, defeating Democratic challenger Rep. Colin Allred and denying Democrats one of their best chances to mitigate potential losses elsewhere. The Longhorn State has long been a Republican stronghold, with the GOP winning every statewide election there since 1994. Allred, a former NFL linebacker who defeated GOP Rep. Pete Sessions to win his House seat in 2018, was seen as a viable challenger. He attacked Cruz for voting against the bipartisan border deal and featured testimonials from border law enforcement officers in his own ads. This year, he tried to tie Allred to the Biden-Harris administration on inflation, the border wall and transgender issues.

The 2020 campaign may have also suffered from a lack of imagination about how big the turnout would be and what Democrats were doing in the courts to expand the vote, a Trump campaign adviser said. Other familiar names from 2020 election lawsuits have been spotted this year too. One is Karen DiSalvo, who after the 2020 election helped force an audit in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The RNC and Trump campaign have focused what they call their election integrity effort on 18 states including the key swing states. Outside groups have poured an astounding $1.1 billion into the presidential race with less than two weeks to go before Election Day, an NBC News analysis found, surpassing the record set during the 2020 election. To put the current level of outside spending into perspective, the $1 billion-plus figure dwarfs the gross domestic product of more than a dozen nations. Outside groups have spent $464 million in support of her and more than $393 million in opposition. By comparison, Trump has benefited from $75 million of outside spending supporting him, while facing $124 million in outside spending against him. Add that to the more than $1 billion in independent expenditures, and the price tag of the presidential campaign reaches $2 billion.

CNN —Almost two weeks to Election Day, I feel more uncertain about this year’s result than any election I’ve covered professionally. Many Republicans are hoping that the close polling points to a blowout win for Trump next month. If we had a polling miss like two years ago, Harris would probably win over 300 electoral votes. VCs are lobbing cash at the presidential election and key congressional races, FEC data shows. This election cycle, investors at the top venture capital firms have plowed tens of millions of dollars into the election, both backing their favored political candidates and just cannily promoting commercial interests. (The filing deadline for Q3 data for quarterly filing entities was October 15, but this data isn't yet readily available in full online.) Business Insider selected 10 venture capital firms to focus on, taking into account fund size and cultural and industry significance. Sequoia Capital's Doug Leone is one of VC's most prolific GOP-aligned political donors, giving his almost $3.8 million to the National Republican Committee and other causes.
