A banana duct-taped to a white wall — or an acclaimed piece of art, depending how you look at it — sold at a Sotheby's auction for $6.24 million on Wednesday. The artwork debuted at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2019 and was initially estimated to sell around $1.5 million, according to Sotheby's. At one point, someone even took the banana off the wall and ate it. According to Sotheby's, Cattelan "single-handedly prompted the world to reconsider how we define art, and the value we seek in it." As Galperin put it, "There is no better forum to adjudicate the value of art and a single object than the platform of auction."

Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday said that he supports restricting “single-sex facilities” in the Capitol, including restrooms, to “individuals of that biological sex”— which would effectively ban the first transgender congresswoman from using women’s bathrooms in the next Congress. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution this week that would ban transgender women from using women's bathrooms and other facilities at the Capitol. She said Tuesday the bill "absolutely" targets Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, D-Del., the first openly transgender person elected to Congress. In a statement posted to X on Wednesday, McBride wrote, “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms. We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars."

Of course, these basic rules of political decorum are ones Donald Trump has rarely followed. He’s been accumulating political capital, and his victory only gives him an opening to accumulate more ... if he chooses to. On some level, I accept the notion that one person’s revenge is another person’s “reform,” so I’m sure Trump could argue he’s appointing reformists. What will ultimately matter is whether these folks can govern like reformers or end up simply as conduits for Trump’s revenge. Here’s the political problem Trump is creating for himself: He’s taking full ownership of the entire bureaucracy now.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said Tuesday that her effort to ban transgender women from using female bathrooms at the U.S. Capitol is a direct response to the election of Sarah McBride, who is set to be the first openly transgender person in Congress. Mace introduced a resolution Monday to prohibit any lawmakers and House employees from “using single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex." She was asked by reporters Tuesday if the move was in response to McBride. Mace said she would like to see her resolution incorporated into the House Rules package for the next Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Tuesday that Republicans are trying to resolve the issue but that they will make accommodations for McBride.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution Monday that would ban transgender women from using female bathrooms in the Capitol just weeks before Democratic Rep.-elect Sarah McBride of Delaware is set to become the first out transgender member of Congress. McBride, who won the race for Delaware’s lone House seat this month, slammed the measure Monday. Mace said Monday that she plans to reintroduce the measure in the next Congress, when Republicans will retain control of the House. In the days following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, some Democrats blamed their party’s position on transgender rights as contributing to Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat. Those Democratic lawmakers said the party went too far and pandered to what they called "the far left" while trying not to offend anyone.

CNN —China rejected a meeting with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during a conference in southeast Asia this week, marking the latest turn in a tumultuous relationship between the two countries’ defense leaders. But China did not accept the offer, pointing to a recent Taiwan arms sale as their rationale, a senior defense official told reporters traveling with Austin in Laos. The Chinese rejection of the meeting in Laos comes just days after US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Peru for their final meeting under Biden’s administration. China has often used the cancellation of meetings and lines of communication as a way of registering displeasure with the United States. After then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in 2022, China cut off a number of lines of communication with the US, including on military issues and climate.

Nancy Mace on Monday introduced a resolution to amend the rules of the US House of Representatives less than two months before Democratic Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, a Delaware state senator, is sworn-in in January. “Sarah McBride doesn’t get a say. And by the way, I do believe that President Trump has the ability to pick some really, really good people. We've seen what they've done to President Trump, we've seen the attacks that they continue to go after him with. That's - that’s being taken completely out of context. And President Trump hasn't been the one that weaponized the DOJ to go after his political enemies. CNN —The United States has returned more than 1,400 looted artifacts worth $10 million to India as part of an ongoing initiative to repatriate stolen art from countries across South and Southeast Asia, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday. The trafficked goods recovered include items that, until recently, were on view at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The DA’s office obtained an arrest warrant for him in 2012though he remains in custody in India, pending his extradition to the US. Since its creation over a decade ago, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Antiquities Trafficking Unit –– a task force of lawyers, investigators and art experts –– has recovered 5,800 antiquities valued at almost $460 million. In July, the US and India signed an agreement to protect cultural property by preventing illegal trades and streamlining the process of returning stolen antiquities back to India.

For some who’ve run afoul of Trump, the election results have sparked fresh worries that he may enter office looking for retribution. During the campaign, Trump has made different statements about whether he might target people who’ve upset him. Rep.
