With just weeks until a December 20 spending deadline, negotiators in the House and Senate are trying to find a path forward on yet another short-term spending bill to run into next year — a move that will force incoming President Donald Trump to contend with a funding battle in his first months of his presidency and smack dab in the middle of what is expected to be a contentious confirmation season. The length of that bill as well as what else is included in it is still an active discussion, sources tell CNN. Doing so would help protect the speaker from a right flank that loathes an end-of-year mega spending bill, known as an omnibus. For now, negotiators are trying to nail down an agreement on what else will be included in the package. A top target: A disaster aid package to help areas ravaged by hurricanes this fall — and how big that package will be remains an active discussion.

Morgan Stanley said Black Friday traffic provided further evidence that some retail names are outperforming their peers. Equity analyst Alex Straton said Black Friday proved to be a "powerful demand catalyst" as shoppers searched for the best deals online and in store. However, the analyst does have an idea of what stocks are currently on the top performers list from the softline retail cohort. Straton called Lululemon the "clear winner" within sportswear. Investors should be discerning when thinking about these retail winners and losers as stock plays.

President-elect Donald Trump was wavering in recent days between two candidates to replace FBI Director Christopher Wray: Kash Patel and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, sources told CNN. Trump interviewed both Bailey and Patel at his Mar-a-Lago home earlier this month, and regularly talked to them by phone as he weighed his decision. “It came down to a matter of what Trump wants and what he was looking for in terms of an FBI director. And Bailey didn’t fit that mold, he didn’t have the personality,” one Trump adviser involved in the conversations told CNN. As of late last week, some close to Trump believed it was a “toss up” between Patel and Bailey as to who the president-elect would pick, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

CNN —Key Republican senators promised on Monday that President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, Kash Patel, will be vetted through the confirmation process. At the same time, two incoming committee chairs suggested openness to Patel and Trump’s other nominees not undergoing full FBI background checks as has traditionally been done. CNN has reported that Trump’s transition team is bypassing traditional FBI background checks for at least some of his Cabinet picks. “No, I’ll let that be a decision that President Trump makes,” he said when asked if he will insist on background checks performed by the FBI. “My position is what President Trump decides to do is what I will support.”It’s unclear how many Republican senators would be open to not having FBI background checks for nominees, and other key senators have already affirmed the importance of background checks.

CNN —Kash Patel, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI and an ardent supporter of the president-elect, has vowed to help dismantle the same organization he’s poised to lead. The FBI director must also be confirmed by the Senate, where members are already bracing for how they’ll navigate a slew of unorthodox Trump selections. As of late last week, some close to Trump believed it was a “toss-up” between Patel and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey as to whom the president-elect would pick for FBI director, according to a source familiar with the discussions. Trump briefly floated Patel as a potential replacement for then-CIA Director Gina Haspel, whom he had considered firing after the 2020 election. Patel was also put in charge of the Pentagon transition effort for Trump’s first term, overseeing coordination with the incoming Biden-Harris administration.

Former “Harry Potter” film actor Rupert Grint faces a $2.3 million bill after he lost a legal battle with the tax authorities. Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the magical film franchise, was ordered to pay the money in 2019 after H.M. Revenue and Customs, the U.K. tax agency, investigated his tax return from seven years earlier. The agency said Grint had wrongly classed $5.7 million in residuals from the movies — money from DVD sales, TV syndication, streaming rights and other sources — as a capital asset rather than income, which is subject to a much higher tax rate. Lawyers for Grint appealed, but after years of wrangling a tribunal judge ruled against the actor this week. He previously lost a separate court battle over a $1.2 million tax refund in 2019.

The building, which once housed a sexual health clinic, will be put up for auction by Hollis Morgan, an estate agency and auction house in Bristol.
