Vice President Kamala Harris tore into Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Saturday for his comment that Republicans might seek to repeal the CHIPS and Science Act if they take control of Congress in the upcoming election. Now to get rid of the CHIPS Act,” Harris added. When asked whether Republicans will seek to repeal the CHIPS Act if they win the election, Johnson replied, “I expect that we probably will,” according to a video posted by a local journalist. “The CHIPS Act is hugely impactful here,” Williams said, vowing to “remind” Johnson “night and day” about the importance of the law. His only mistake was being honest.”The CHIPS Act passed Congress on a bipartisan basis and was signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2022.

The legislation is poised to bring a $100 billion microchip manufacturing center to the area where Johnson was campaigning with GOP Rep. Brandon Williams. “As I have further explained and clarified, I fully support Micron coming to Central NY, and the CHIPS Act is not on the agenda for repeal,” Johnson later said in a statement. The new funding was intended to help companies bring chip manufacturing back to the US and, as a result, help lower costs and prevent supply chain disruptions. Earlier Friday, Johnson was asked by a reporter from Citrus TV News, “The former president has said that he doesn’t support the CHIPS and Sciences Act. “We’re going to support chip manufacturing, we do not support the Green New Deal.

But new research suggests that one English woman convicted of witchcraft and condemned to be hanged may have escaped the noose. Alice Molland – who has long held the tragic record of being the last woman in England to be hanged as a “witch” – was sentenced to death in 1685. In June 1685, Avis Molland – by now widowed – emerges in court records as an informant about a potential revolt, at a time when the Duke of Monmouth was attempting a rebellion against the king. Avis Molland died a free woman eight years later. Worland has spent 18 years unearthing victims’ details, and has successfully campaigned to have memorials to executed “witches” in Colchester and Chelmsford.

I work at my clinic 40 hours a week, but I used to spend a lot of my time documenting patient notes outside those hours. AdvertisementLast fall, I started using Suki AI, an AI-powered voice assistant, to help me make notes from patient interactions. I'm in favor of using AI for notetaking, but do have hesitations about using it for other purposes in the medical field. I signed up to trial Suki AI, which I heard the American Academy of Family Physicians endorsed, and a competitor product. I'm all in when it comes to using AI for transcription and summing up visits, but we have to make sure we have appropriate guardrails when going beyond that.

For people with non-standard speech, it can happen in nearly every interaction with this kind of technology — Israeli company Voiceitt aims to change that. By using personalized voice models, its AI-powered speech recognition system helps people with speech impairments, caused by conditions like cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s, Down Syndrome or stroke, communicate more effectively with both people and digital devices. For Voiceitt co-founder Sara Smolley, facilitating speech recognition for non-standard speech patterns is a personal mission. “By the time I was born, she had lost most of her motor capabilities, and her speech was impacted.”Voiceitt was launched as an app in 2021 and operated as a simple vocal translator, converting non-standard speech to audio. Voiceitt has developed integrations with WebEx and ChatGPT, along with a Google Chrome extension, which convert non-standard speech to captions shown on the screen.

But Wall Street was mostly clueless this week when it came to predicting how big a rate cut the Fed would deliver on Wednesday. The jumbo half-point cut the Fed ultimately rolled out was not at all what traders expected a week ago. Powell: Fed officials ‘left the size of the rate cut open’ ahead of September meetingIn a closely watched speech at the Fed’s annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, last month, Powell declared “the time has come” to cut interest rates. That data was apparently enough to spur some Fed officials to reconsider their position. “But we do not expect Fed officials to be intentionally opaque,” said Husby.

Doug Ingle, the lead singer and organist of Iron Butterfly, the band that turned a purportedly misheard lyric into “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” the 17-minute magnum opus that propelled acid rock into the outer reaches of excess in the late 1960s, died on May 24. His death was confirmed in a social media post by his son Doug Ingle Jr The post did not say where he died or specify a cause. Mr. Ingle was the last surviving member of the classic lineup of Iron Butterfly, the pioneering hard rock act he helped found in 1966. The band released its first three albums within a year, starting with “Heavy” in early 1968, and, after a lineup shuffle, cemented its place in rock lore with its second album, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” released that July. A radio version of the title song, whittled to under three minutes, made it to No.

She said she had to make more "friction" between herself and spending money to curb her bad habits. Understanding I wasn't alone helped me change my spending habitsI have always been a spender and often lived paycheck to paycheck. I was barely contributing to my retirement savings. Saving money is hard for many people at all income levels. Digital payment has removed a lot of friction from the act of spending money.

Leon Wildes, a prominent immigration lawyer best known for his landmark, yearslong fight in the 1970s to prevent John Lennon from being deported and enable the former Beatle to receive permanent residency in the U.S., has died at age 90. Thanks to Wildes' ingenuity and the shocking twists of politics in the 1970s, Lennon's deportation was delayed and ultimately revoked. His honors included the Edith Lowenstein Memorial Award for excellence in advancing the practice of immigration law and the Elmer Fried Excellence in Teaching Award. He attended Yeshiva College as an undergraduate and became interested in immigration law after working with the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in the late 1950s. Wildes published articles in the Cardozo Law Review among other journals and wrote a book on the Lennon case, “John Lennon Vs. the USA,” that came out in 2016.

A Russian jet tried to fire on a British spy plane last year, but the missile malfunctioned, NYT reports. In their telling, the Russian fighter jet pilot misheard the radar operator on the ground as conveying permission to fire, locked on to the British aircraft, and only failed because the missile didn't launch properly. One of the Russian jets "released a missile" in the "vicinity" of the UK plane, which he described as "potentially dangerous." Following the incident, the UK temporarily ceased surveillance patrols, later sending them out with an armed escort. Siri called emergency services after mishearing a boxing instructor, a gym owner told Insider. The term is similar to the number for emergency services in Australia and other countries. He said the digital assistant then called 112, which is an alternative emergency number in Australia and other countries. If the message is not dismissed it sends an automated message to the nearest emergency call center. Last week, a spokesperson for Apple told The New York Post that the company was getting feedback from emergency call centers, which have reported a spike in automated calls.
