25 Jump Scares That Still Make Us Jump The floor creaks, the music turns ominous and an uneasy quiet sets in. With Times film writers, filmmakers and stars weighing in, we ranked the 25 jump scares that still get us every time. Jump scares are considered the fart jokes of horror: cheap, easy and lowbrow. More ingenuity goes into certain jump scares than entire movies. Jump scares have an advantage online, where context shifts rapidly.

That changed in 2023, when Texas went 12-2 in coach Steve Sarkisian’s third season and appeared in the College Football Playoff for the first time. Like Texas, Georgia spent much of the last 30 years boasting a past national championship and a campus in a recruiting-rich part of the country, with little modern success to show for it. The quarterback of the Bulldogs’ back-to-back championship teams was not a former high-star recruit but he did grow up in Georgia. In the decade before Sarkisian’s hiring, Texas recruiting classes finished with an average rank of 10.8 in the country; in three recruiting classes under Sarkisian, Texas has averaged a ranking of 4.6. In the eyes of Texas fans, the Longhorns won’t qualify as fully back until they win the program’s first football national championship since 2006.

The White House, however, instructed the FBI to only interview 10 witnesses, according to the report. The report sheds light on the tight limits the White House imposed on the FBI as it undertook a “supplemental” background investigation while Kavanaugh’s confirmation hung in the balance. According to the report, those Trump comments were then flagged by an FBI public affairs office in emails to others at the agency, including some top officials. The White House finally told the official that it would be in touch it if had additional guidance to offer on the supplemental investigation. With the report, Whitehouse is calling for the agency to put in place standard procedures for how such supplemental investigations should be handled.

Trump in March said on social media platform Truth Social that Democrats are "killing Social Security and Medicare by allowing the invasion of the migrants." The earnings suspense file is an electronic holding file for wage items where names and Social Security numbers on Form W-2s do not match the Social Security Administration's records, an agency spokesperson said via email. "Immigration, in general, has a very positive role," said Sam Gutterman, chairperson of the American Academy of Actuaries' Social Security committee. The Social Security Administration in an email explained that there are strict rules about who can legally receive benefits and Social Security numbers. "The Social Security Act does not permit payment of benefits to noncitizens residing in the U.S. if they're not lawfully present here," a Social Security spokesperson said.

During his 2016 campaign, Donald J. Trump orchestrated a takeover of the Republican Party in part by blasting wealthy political donors as the root of corruption and delivering a populist message that appealed to working-class voters. Eight years later, one of his key decision points in choosing a running mate is connections to the superrich. As the end of the selection process approaches, with an announcement expected in the next two weeks after months of suggestion and misdirection, Republican hopefuls are looking to convince Mr. Trump that they have the financial backing behind them that could help swing the race. There are other factors that could make for a good match. Mr. Trump is said to be considering candidates with discipline on the campaign trail, who will not steal his precious spotlight and would fare well in a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Starboard Value sued software maker Autodesk on Monday to delay the company's annual meeting and reopen the board nominating window and allow the activist to mount a proxy fight. Activists can typically only begin a proxy fight, involving the nomination of a slate of directors to replace the existing board, if they submit their proposals within a specific window. Starboard confirmed in a letter on Monday that it has a stake in Autodesk valued at more than $500 million. The company waited until April 1 to tell shareholders about the investigation, filings show, which was more than a week after the nominating window had closed. An Autodesk representative referred CNBC to its prior statements on the matter, where it said it would refuse Starboard's requests to reopen the nominating window and delay the annual meeting.

Today’s verdict for Hunter Biden is only the beginning in @HouseGOP's pursuit for accountability. CNN —Months before Donald Trump was indicted for mishandling classified documents, a federal judge said that investigators had “strong evidence” that the former president “intended” to hide classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort, according to newly released court documents. Judge Beryl Howell cited, among other things, the discovery of additional classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago months after the FBI’s search of the property in the summer of 2022. The ruling was among hundreds of pages of previously sealed filings that were publicly docketed Tuesday in the criminal classified documents case against Trump. Nauta has been charged alongside Trump and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira in the case, facing charges of mishandling sensitive or classified materials and obstruction. The case against Trump, brought last summer, is currently in front of Judge Aileen Cannon in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Taylor Swift's new album "The Tortured Poets Department" will arrive on Friday, April 19. The quiet rollout strategy says a lot about Swift's stature in the pop-music landscape. Die-hard fans say it's a masterpiece, destined to win Swift her fifth Grammy Award for album of the year. The aforementioned fans who insist "Poets" will dominate charts and break records have no idea what the album sounds like. The particulars of each rollout strategy are rendered irrelevant, dwarfed by the all-consuming enormity of her own personal news cycle.

Die-hard fans say it's a masterpiece, destined to win Swift her fifth Grammy Award for album of the year. You may remember that I’ve been blitzing my way through murder mysteries this winter. As it turns out, one Agatha Christie mystery is fun, two are interesting, but once you get past three or four, they start to raise real questions about the economic incentives of the early 20th century. (There may have been some others as well? After a point they all begin to blur together.) And with surprising regularity, the culprits’ elaborate schemes of murder and misdirection are specifically designed to obtain an inheritance.

The United Auto Workers union said it reached a tentative deal with Stellantis on Saturday, six weeks after workers went on strike. Earlier in the week, Ford also reached a tentative agreement with the UAW. Photos: Emily Elconin/Bloomberg NewsThe decision by the United Auto Workers on Saturday to call a fresh strike at General Motors as talks appeared to be nearing a conclusion was the latest in a set of unexpected moves by the union, which has used misdirection and maximized publicity to keep companies off balance. The surprise walkout at a factory in Tennessee followed several days of intensifying contract negotiations between GM and union leaders, including meetings involving GM Chief Executive Mary Barra and UAW President Shawn Fain. The escalation of the strike came as the UAW confirmed that it reached a tentative agreement with Chrysler-parent Stellantis on a new labor contract.

China’s leaders speed towards Japanisation

LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - China’s real estate market is in decline. The trouble is that China’s economic imbalances are far worse than Japan’s in 1990. Yet China’s GDP per capita has reached only half of Japan’s level in 1990. China’s economic misdirection is catalogued in Yasheng Huang’s “The Rise and Fall of the East”. After 1978 the authorities gave provincial governments substantial freedom to promote economic growth and rewarded them for meeting a growth target.

Yugoslav forces in the Kosovo War faced similar struggles trying different tricks to fool NATO jets. The drone's operator seemed to notice the tanks were not real, zooming in on the puffy tanks in the video. Outgunned by superior NATO airpower, Yugoslav forces took extra steps to try to make their fakes convincing. Even trays of water, also heated by sunlight, were placed inside the fake tanks to give the impression the tank was crewed, running, and operational.

After decades of stage shows, TV specials and essentially reinventing mind control, Derren Brown is doing something new: He’s getting off the stage, and into the director’s chair. “Unbelievable,” directed by Brown and his longtime collaborators Andrew O’Connor and Andy Nyman, opens on Tuesday in London’s West End, and is a family-friendly magic show the likes of which its makers promise you’ve never seen. It’s also a new kind of Derren Brown show. Brown has long maintained that he is not a psychic, but that his mind tricks are a combination of magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship. This time, Brown said that creating a magic show using actors and musicians directed by him, O’Connor and Nyman “just felt like a really appealing idea.”

All that could be seen of the grave from a bridge over the cemetery were a large Russian flag, a Wagner flag, and the top of a wooden cross. Then in June he led a brief mutiny against the Russian military leadership, leading to widespread speculation that his days were numbered. On Aug. 23, a business jet carrying Mr. Prigozhin fell, smoking, from the sky northwest of Moscow. All ten people aboard were killed, including the three top figures in Wagner, leaving the group’s future in doubt. The confusion about his burial and heavy security presence at Porokhovskoye ensured that the throng of supporters expected to attend never materialized.

“President Biden’s defenders purport a weak defense by asserting the Committee must show payments directly to the President to show corruption,” the House Oversight Republicans wrote. “It appears no real services were provided other than access to the Biden network, including Joe Biden himself. Even though Hunter Biden was not directly involved, House Oversight Republicans are attempting to show how a portion of the $3.5 million was transferred into multiple accounts until it entered an account connected to Hunter Biden. In a 2020 Senate report, Republicans revealed the existence of the payment from Baturina to a company tied to Hunter Biden’s business associates. The memo focuses on deals and transactions Hunter Biden made with foreign oligarchs and leaders in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

The new campaign by the group working to pass the August measure, called Protect Women Ohio, includes a $4.5 million expenditure on two new 30-second television ads, as well as $1 million on statewide radio and digital ads. The ads continue a strategy by the group to tie the Aug. 8 measure, as well as a November ballot measure that would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, to parental rights restrictions. Protect Women Ohio’s ads and statements also argue that the presence of ACLU of Ohio in the pro-amendment coalition is evidence of a push beyond abortion rights. The group has also, so far, committed $25 million for ads to oppose the November ballot measure. If voters pass the threshold measure in August, then the proposed abortion rights amendment in November would need 60% support from voters to pass.

LONDON, July 28 (Reuters) - UK authorities said on Friday they were investigating defence ministry emails that were mistakenly sent to the wrong recipient, after reports that messages intended for U.S. military intelligence ended up with Russian ally Mali. Ministry of Defence officials were trying to contact the Pentagon, whose domain name is ".mil", but accidentally sent the mails to Mali, which has the domain name ".ml", the Times newspaper reported. Britain said the information that was mistakenly shared was not highly sensitive. "We have opened an investigation after a small number of emails were mistakenly forwarded to an incorrect email domain," a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said, without confirming the domain's name. "All sensitive information is shared on systems designed to minimise the risk of misdirection," the spokesperson said.

CNN —In the classic 1999 film, “Election,” the high school student government vote has everything: naked ambition, campaign poster shredding, ballot manipulation, infidelity and more. But what the gifted writer Tom Perotta likely couldn’t imagine was an election in which two unpopular candidates square off for president. That doesn’t happen in high school, even in a satirical movie. The president supports stripping that state of its first-in-the-nation primary status in favor of South Carolina, the state that energized Biden’s 2020 campaign. “In the runup to the 2024 elections, Democrats plan to put the Supreme Court on trial,” wrote David Mark.

“Insidious,” whose fifth installment opened Friday, is a second-tier horror franchise — it’s not even the best James Wan franchise starring Patrick Wilson, which would be “The Conjuring” — with a few elite jump scares, including one of the best in the genre. In the original in 2010, Lorraine Lambert (Barbara Hershey) is telling her son, Josh (Wilson), about a horrible dream when a red-faced demon suddenly appears behind his head. It’s a magnificent shock because of the askew blocking, the patient misdirection of the editing and Hershey’s committed performance. In “Insidious: The Red Door,” a grim, workmanlike effort that collapses into woo-woo nonsense, Wilson makes his directorial debut, and demonstrates he grasps the importance of that jump scare, which is sketched in charcoal on paper next to his name in the opening credits. This prickly relationship is at the center of the movie, as dad drives his son to college.

New York CNN —Bret Baier’s standing as a “fair and balanced” newsman is being called into question like never before. The Fox News chief political anchor has long enjoyed a strong reputation in Washington circles and among viewers, anchoring major news events for the network and moderating presidential debates. That reputation, however, has been ruptured in recent months by the release of leaked private text messages sent in the wake of the 2020 presidential election, casting the “Special Report” anchor in a dramatically different light. “We need to do something to reassure our core audience,” Carlson wrote Baier in the wake of the Arizona call, according to The Beast. The revelations about Baier are especially noteworthy given that he is the face of Fox News’ so-called “straight news” division.
Jim Cramer has held the same "own it; don't trade it" trading philosophy on Apple for some time now and this week showed that patience in action, he said Friday. Cramer has been banging the drum about four main hurdles in the market right now: Wednesday's Fed meeting, Friday's jobs report, the debt ceiling and Apple earnings. This week, Cramer's patience worked with Apple, he said. The company posted top- and bottom-line beats for the fiscal second quarter, thanks to stronger-than-expected iPhone sales. "I refuse to be shaken out of the world's best company by one errant component supplier, or a couple of joker-brokers, who say, 'Hey, things have gotten weaker,'" Cramer said.
