Opinion | The Mystery of JD Vance Is Unraveling
  + stars: | 2024-07-31 | by ( Thomas B. Edsall | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
JD Vance embodies the pros and cons of political competition in a divided America. Vance’s reputation as defender of the globalization-battered working class can help Trump in the electorally crucial Midwest industrial belt states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. But Vance is also an absolutist on restricting abortion, the Republican’s biggest current weakness, according to polls. He has adopted Trump’s line that abortion rules should be left to the states, but his voting record is striking. In an interview with the Youngstown Ohio Vindicator, Vance contended that there was extensive fraud in 2020 including a “big-tech” conspiracy directed by Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook.

Dry January “was the perfect eye-opener.”Now sober, Montejano has adopted several tactics to keep herself on track: talking to a therapist, journaling and drinking nonalcoholic beverages like mocktails. By comparison, a 12-ounce glass of beer contains about 5% alcohol, according to the CDC. “The nonalcoholic beverages have a lot of the cues that are associated with real alcoholic beverages,” she said. “Are you reaching those goals with nonalcoholic beverages?” she said. Ultimately, going sober can have social ramifications, so it’s important to surround yourself with people who can support you.

Opinion | Ron DeSantis Made Smiling Look Hard
  + stars: | 2024-01-22 | by ( Michelle Cottle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In a short video on Sunday, the Florida governor looked natty in a blue suit and red tie, every hair perfectly in place as he papered over his deeply imperfect campaign. He touted his own leadership and, perhaps with an eye toward running again in 2028, endorsed the Republican kingmaker, Donald Trump. But watching DeSantis’s now-famous awkward smile and listening to his unnatural cadence, it was hard not to think: Yeah. Mr. DeSantis is a successful governor of a major state and a smart guy with a picture-perfect family. On the presidential campaign trail, he was robotic and awkward, rude and arrogant, with the interpersonal skills of poorly designed A.I.

These dealers who switched to EVs love their cars. Being an EV owner helps these dealers talk to their staff and customers about the cars. CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia has benefited from waiting to reveal where he stands as the swing vote in a chamber closely divided between Democrats and Republicans. During a multi-day trip to West Virginia's capital this week, the 76-year-old expressed growing frustration with the polarized U.S. two-party system. He managed to win reelection in 2018 in one of former President Donald Trump's most loyal states as the last of his party to hold statewide office in now-deep red West Virginia. Still, Justice has a high approval rating in West Virginia, making him a formidable opponent for any candidate. Robert Rupp, a retired political history professor at West Virginia Wesleyan, called Manchin one of the most successful campaigners in recent state history because of his personal relationships with constituents.

… Your ex-husband’s fiancée would then have relevant information for deciding whether she wants to go through with the marriage. True, you might be dismissed as untrustworthy, but if they won’t believe the truth, that’s their problem. It seems the most painful part to her is the lies her ex told about her. There is unlikely to be any lasting peace in revealing the truth to the ex-husband’s fiancée, the fiancée’s ex-husband, or anyone else outside the writer’s circle of friends and family. Doing so will invite conflict that may just end up making the writer’s life more difficult and is unlikely to achieve any vindication.

Even though it’s still August, eyes are already on how the upcoming holiday shopping season will pan out. Coresight expects the 2023 year-end holiday sales for October through December to be up by just low single digits from a year ago. Harmon said this year’s forecast rests on the shoulders of “a couple of good years of strong holiday sales growth, making comparisons more difficult, and takes into account holiday spending is occurring sooner.”“The patterns of holiday spending have changed. The same pattern was repeated last year, effectively elongating the holiday sales season. At the same time, Harmon said US retail sales are slowing.

Darwin made lists of “marry” and “not marry” scenarios, precisely as one would expect from a great scientist. At the bottom of the page is scrawled, “Marry — Marry — Marry Q.E.D.” Which is Latin for “that which was to be demonstrated,” as if he had demonstrated anything except his own susceptibility to love. Future married you will probably be happy, but he or she is a different person. That said, most married people are thankful to their past single selves for deciding to wed. (I certainly am.) On average, though, I think children grow up best in intact, two-parent households, and married parents are more likely to stay together than cohabiting unmarried ones.

Whatever the provenance of the two drones that approached the Kremlin early Wednesday morning, one thing was clear: The Russian government wanted the world to know about them. The Kremlin made a deliberate choice to quickly make public what it claimed was a drone attack aimed at assassinating President Vladimir V. Putin. It published an unusual, five-paragraph statement on its website that named the Ukrainian government as the perpetrator and asserted the right to retaliate against Kyiv. The Kremlin’s messaging diverged significantly from its response to previous episodes involving attacks on Russia or Russian-occupied territory. Now the question is whether Russia will use the incident to justify more and even deadlier strikes against Ukraine.
It was a long-term deal so I don't think we have to confront that yet, but it's gone terrifically for us, actually. If you don't want to compete, don't come in. Can you talk about the synergy with the Whitney Houston movie — she was a Sony Music artist — or "Gran Turismo," a Playstation game? Do you wish HBO Max's "The Last of Us," which is also based on a Sony Playstation game, had been a movie? A lot of big movies come out of it.

The off-price retailer beat earnings expectations on Wednesday, reporting third-quarter earnings-per-share of 86 cents versus a StreetAccount estimate of 80 cents. Revenue, however, came in lower than expected, at $12.17 billion compared to the $12.3 billion expected by Wall Street. The glut of inventory in the retail space has helped lift TJX 's earnings, CEO Ernie Herrman said on the earnings conference call Wednesday. TJX's comparable-store sales were driven by the excellent performance of Marmaxx, particularly its apparel business, the company said. U.S. Marmaxx sales, which includes T.J. Maxx and Marshalls brand stores, rose 3%in the third quarter, while TJX's HomeGoods' comparable-store sales sank 16%.
