Drilling down to bank stocks, specifically, within financials still shows that the group could have room to run. In 2016, bank stocks outperformed by 11.5 percentage points, compared to 6.9 points this year, according to the note. Bank stocks have seen big moves since Trump's win, as investors react to the expectation of a lighter regulatory touch from his administration. Don't get caught up in the debate on large-cap versus small-cap stocks — the real Goldilocks opportunity lies in mid-cap stocks, according to Goldman Sachs. "Today, mid-cap equities offer investors superior earnings growth at a reasonable price compared with large-caps," Ma wrote in a Tuesday note. "Mid-cap stocks have typically outperformed both large-caps and small-caps during the 12 months following the first Fed rate cut in an easing cycle," she added. In addition, mid-caps have "stronger fundamentals" compared with small-cap names, Ma noted. Here are some of Ma's favorite mid-cap names that are both high quality with potential to grow.

While we are getting a tech rally Wednesday thanks to Advanced Micro Devices (up 7%), this is the month when rotation became more than a one day event. Since small-cap companies often have more debt and higher borrowing costs, the expectation of lower rates is certainly a factor. I noted weeks ago that more fundamentally inclined investors were worried about the slower rate of earnings growth for big cap technology stocks . The Russell 2000 would also benefit any time a rotation out of tech occurs because the weightings are different. While the two sectors that comprise technology in the S & P 500 (Technology and Communication Services) are about 40% of the S & P 500, the Russell 2000 is much more diverse.

Traders at JPMorgan broke down how they expect stocks will react to Wednesday's report, with a focus on core CPI month over month, based on six different scenarios: 40% chance — The reading rises 0.3%-0.35%: This is the most likely outcome, per JPMorgan traders. S & P 500 moves could range between a 0.5% loss and a 1% gain. 10% chance — Core inflation climbs more than 0.4%: The S & P 500 would drop 1.75% to 2.5% under such a hot report, JPMorgan traders think. 7.5% chance — Core CPI gains 0.2%-0.25%: A decline in housing cost increases along with lower core goods prices could make this outcome possible. It would also send the S & P 500 up 1.5% to 2%, JPMorgan traders said.
