The Department of Justice is calling for Google to divest its Chrome browser, following a ruling in August that the company holds a monopoly in the search market. Chrome, which Google launched in 2008, provides the search giant with data it then uses for targeting ads. Additionally, the DOJ said that Google be prevented from entering into exclusionary agreements with third parties like Apple and Samsung. In August, a federal judge ruled that Google holds a monopoly in the search market. Last month, the DOJ indicated it was considering a breakup of Google businesses, including potentially breaking up its Chrome, Play or Android divisions.

Its CEO, however, was paid a relatively modest five figures at OpenAI in 2023, filings show. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was paid $76,001 in compensation in 2023 to lead what's now one of the most valuable startups in the world, the company's tax filings for the year showed. During a hearing before a senate judiciary subcommittee in May 2023, Altman said he gets "paid enough for health insurance" and that he receives no equity in OpenAI. Bloomberg estimated in March 2024 that the CEO is worth at least $2 billion, not including any stake he may have in OpenAI. Altman denied during an all-hands meeting with employees that there were plans for him to receive a "giant euqity stake," CNBC reported.

Igor Golovniov | Sopa Images | Lightrocket via Getty ImagesLONDON — Britain's competition regulator is preparing remedies aimed at solving competition issues in the multibillion-pound cloud computing industry. The sources, who preferred to remain anonymous given the investigation's sensitive nature, said that the cloud market remedies could be announced within the next two weeks. Amazon is the largest player in the market, offering cloud services via its Amazon Web Services (AWS) arm. Ofcom subsequently referred its cloud review to the CMA to address competition issues in the market. She is expected to outline plans for a review in 2025 into whether the CMA should more frequently use behavioral remedies when approving deals, the FT reported.

The Justice Department on Wednesday asked the judge in its antitrust case against Google to force the company to sell its Chrome browser. "Advertisers would find competitors for their business, rather than needing to pay a dominant search engine." When you open Chrome and type something into the search bar at the top, these words are automatically transformed into a Google Search. And when there's an option for users, Google pays partners billions of dollars to set its search engine as the default. For instance, if most people click on the third result, Google's Search engine will likely adjust and rank that result higher in the future.

Copilot's indexing of internal data led to oversharing of sensitive company information. Some corporate customers delayed Copilot deployment due to security and oversharing concerns. On Tuesday, Microsoft released new tools and a guide to help customers mitigate a Copilot security issue that inadvertently let employees access sensitive information, such as CEO emails and HR documents. These updates are designed "to identify and mitigate oversharing and ongoing governance concerns," the company explained in a new blueprint for Microsoft's 365 productivity software suite. Simply put, the leading maker of AI chips again fell victim to the curse of high expectations. Through its Nvidia AI Enterprise service, Nvidia is in the process of building out a potentially massive software business. Now, as we start this next generation, we'll be seeing models run on 100,000 Blackwell chips — and scaling is still in effect. Huang's argument is that going beyond 100,000 Blackwell chips will yield even more capable models. It's a fair question to ask because Nvidia's stock has historically taken a pretty big hit when its customers – such as cloud-computing providers – start uttering that phrase.

Business spending on generative AI surged 500% this year, from $2.3 billion in 2023 to $13.8 billion, according to data released by Menlo Ventures on Wednesday. The report also found that OpenAI ceded market share in enterprise AI, declining from 50% to 34%. Anthropic doubled its market share from 12% to 24%. Although OpenAI and Anthropic dominated companies' AI model use, he said, people are "juggling models" and that habit is "not a well-understood piece of data." Meta 's market share stayed at 16% and Cohere's share remained at 3%.

Those hopes fall on Blackwell, which is Nvidia's name for a family of server products based around its next-generation AI chip. Some of Nvidia's most important end-customers have already received some Blackwell chips, the company confirmed on Wednesday. "We will we'll ship more Blackwells next quarter than this [quarter], and we'll ship more Blackwells the quarter after that than than our first quarter," Huang said. A limiting factor to producing more Blackwell systems is the amount of components that Nvidia's suppliers can provide, Huang said. As Blackwell rolls out, Nvidia's current AI chips, which it calls Hopper, will be relegated to serving AI models, not creating new ones.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday said consumers right now aren't focused on brand names, but on companies that can provide the most value. The big box retailer cut its full-year guidance, and management said it saw weakness in discretionary products despite price cuts. Although the two retailers offer similar products, Cramer said Walmart is simply more affordable. He also named other discount outfits that are seeing success despite a tough consumer landscape, including Costco , TJX , Chili's-parent Brinker and Texas Roadhouse . On Wall Street, this focus on value extends beyond consumer companies and to sectors like tech, Cramer added.

Back in late September, I laid out a bearish thesis on Apple and the trade expired last Friday and resulted in a 100% gain. Apple (AAPL) continues to face significant headwinds, with disappointing iPhone 16 sales, growing competition in augmented reality, and underwhelming progress in artificial intelligence (AI). China's slowing economy has weighed heavily on Apple, exacerbating challenges in one of its largest markets. While Apple boasts industry-leading net margins of 24%, its expected EPS growth of 11.6% and revenue growth of 6.9% provide limited justification for this valuation premium. With iPhone sales growth faltering and the lack of a clear catalyst from AI or AR/VR initiatives, AAPL's premium valuation remains increasingly difficult to sustain.

Small-caps, small-cap value, non-US value stocks are expected to outperform with low valuations. Research Affiliates Founder Rob Arnott sees a bear market ahead for large-cap growth stocks. That spells trouble for the S&P 500, which is heavily made up of giant growth stocks like Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia. Small-cap stocks, small-cap value stocks, and non-US value stocks are all poised to deliver at least 10% returns annually over the next 10 years, he said. Small-cap value stocks (Russell 2000 Value index) are also cheap, with a 14 CAPE ratio.

Microsoft emerged as the most under-owned megacap stock among institutional investors, signaling a rebound could be on the horizon, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley thinks that stocks tend to experience a technical pull higher when active ownership is much lower than their weightings in the S & P 500, and vice versa. The gap between Microsoft's S & P 500 weighting and institutional ownership stood at 2.08% by the end of the third quarter, making it the most under-owned Big Tech name, Morgan Stanley said. After Microsoft, Apple is the second-most under-owned megacap tech stock coming out of the third quarter. On the flip side, the most over-owned tech stock at the end of September is software company Intuit , which could see a technical downward pull soon, according to Morgan Stanley.

Donald Trump's proposed tariffs will dent U.S. economic growth going into 2026, said Morgan Stanley's chief global economist Seth Carpenter. In the event that they are enacted all at once, they could result in a "big negative shock" to the economy, Carpenter told CNBC's Sri Jegarajah on the sidelines of Morgan Stanley's annual Asia Pacific Summit in Singapore. Carpenter, who maintained Morgan Stanley's base case of these tariffs being spread over 2025, said they would lead to higher inflation. "Then into 2026, we think growth starts to come down a great deal in the U.S. because of those tariffs and some of the other policies," he cautioned. Very clear, tariffs are a drag on growth for the U.S., not just for the countries that the tariffs are put on," Carpenter added.

When Tomas Gorny started a tech business in 2001, he wasn't thinking about becoming a billionaire someday. Gorny started a business called Ipower, which sold software that helped people build their own websites. Six years later, he sold Ipower to web hosting company Endurance International for a reported $100 million. Perhaps ironically, Gorny says the more modest goal helped helped him grow his company's bottom line far more effectively. Once he released his more developed products, Ipower started adding hundreds of new customers per day, he says.

The request would follow a landmark ruling in August by Judge Amit P. Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that found Google had illegally maintained a monopoly in online search. Judge Mehta asked the Justice Department and the states that brought the antitrust case to submit solutions by the end of Wednesday to correct the search monopoly. Beyond the sale of Chrome, the government is set to ask Judge Mehta to bar Google from entering into paid agreements with Apple and others to be the automatic search engine on smartphones and in browsers, the people said. The proposals would likely be the most significant remedies to be requested in a tech antitrust case since the Justice Department asked to break up Microsoft in 2000. If Judge Mehta adopts the proposals, they will set the tone for a string of other antitrust cases that challenge the dominance of tech behemoths including Apple, Amazon and Meta.

Google has promised to appeal; the company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday’s filing. “Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Mehta wrote in his opinion. The Microsoft case has been credited with paving the way for Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome browsers, which ultimately allowed Google to promote its search engine to billions of internet users. The Microsoft parallels in the Google case are clear, Mehta wrote in his August opinion. Even as Google fights the Justice Department on remedies in the search case, the company is embroiled in another antitrust battle just across the Potomac River in Alexandria, Virginia.

The board of Acurx Pharmaceuticals approved Wednesday the purchase of up to $1 million in bitcoin to hold as a treasury reserve asset. "This new treasury strategy is a finance strategy and has no impact on our overarching drug development plans." On an X spaces event Tuesday evening, MicroStrategy Chairman and bitcoin evangelist Michael Saylor said he plans to pitch the board of Microsoft in December on his bitcoin treasury strategy. The theme has broadened to the government level this year, with Sen. Cynthia Lummis proposing a national strategic bitcoin reserve this summer. AdvertisementGoogle pays Apple at least $20 billion a year to make its search engine the default on iPhones. Those payments were at the heart of a federal antitrust case Google lost earlier this year. That's because a long-running deal between Apple and Google, where Google pays Apple at least $20 billion a year to make Google the default search engine on iPhones, is at the heart of the US government's antitrust case against Google. (Though, confusingly, an earlier Bloomberg report about the DOJ's plan focused on forcing Google to sell off its Chrome browser and never mentioned the Apple payments.) AdvertisementBut even if that happens, it doesn't mean Apple automatically loses all the money Google pays it every year.
