AdvertisementThe AfroTech Conference for Black tech professionals debuted in Houston this year. The eighth edition of AfroTech, which lasted four days in Houston, held its place among one of the largest gatherings of Black tech professionals. AdvertisementMost of the attendees walked away with connections that anchor their experience as one of few Black tech professionals, if not the only one on their teams or at their tech companies. Many were searching for connections that could land early career conferencegoers their first tech job or a branch to pivot to new tech companies or into entrepreneurship. Her loss didn't seem to dampen the mood too much, but it has cast doubt and uncertainty as big tech companies line up to kiss the ring of the new administration.

Mr. Troyer, the Republican, moved to a more Republican neighborhood. Mr. Biden won Georgia in 2020, the first time a Democrat won the state since 1992. Over the same span, at least 10,000 more Republicans than Democrats moved out of the state — a third of them to Florida. Petty is equally at home as a poet and peacemaker as she is a researcher, founder, artist, and policymaker for more equitable artificial intelligence. She's asking tough questions about the pervasive nature of surveillance branded as safety, particularly facial recognition, and policing tools as they're applied to marginalized communities. The Detroit native has been honored with a certificate of special congressional recognition and has racked up awards for AI policy, DEI, and ethics. "We still have time to minimize the environmental impacts, to rid ourselves of pervasive and coercive surveillance technologies that harm us, to protect our critical thinking from tech companies who are pursuing systems that erase human cognition in detrimental ways," Petty told Business Insider. His teacher yelled at him, he said. And when Ms. Lopez picked him up from school, he would often immediately start to cry. This year at a new school, Nathanael, 7, was happier. He shared a teacher with only six other students — not in one classroom, but in the entire school. Nathanael attended a microschool, an increasingly popular type of super-small, largely unregulated private school, often serving fewer students than are enrolled in a single classroom at a traditional school.

In Cleveland, Tenn., a side dish became the main event after it gained statewide recognition. May 18, 2024Attend a barbecue, church potluck or summer dinner in the small city of Cleveland in eastern Tennessee, and somewhere on the table, there will be a dish of hot slaw. People here slather it on hot dogs, plop it on pulled pork or simply reach for a heaping spoonful. So when the State Legislature named hot slaw as Tennessee’s first official state food this year, born-and-raised residents elsewhere in the state were flummoxed. What was this dish that had vaulted over Moon Pies, the hickory smoked barbecue of Memphis and Nashville’s hot chicken?

The AI startup, named after inventor Lewis Howard Latimer and affectionately known as "The BlackGPT" is an answer to the bias, lack of cultural competency, and erasure found in popular AI tools like ChatGPT, says Latimer CEO and cofounder John Pasmore. Pasmore said the company has plans to launch about five more products specifically focused on bias detection. The move-fast, break-things energy in AI created an opportunity for Latimer, Pasmore said. This method is baked into Latimer's nascent suite of business offerings set to launch after the release of its API. He is confident that there is "a billion-dollar opportunity" to address bias in incumbent AI offerings for enterprises.

We’re growing some teeth as to what can be done with AI, but we also see where there’s progress, there’s attack. One of the things I like to point out with AI systems is that if your AI systems fail on people of color, you don’t have a robust system. If your AI doesn’t work on the global majority, if your AI doesn’t work for women, if your AI doesn’t work for people with disabilities, once you start expanding all of the areas we’re talking about, it comes to your AI doesn’t work for humanity. To me, that’s a proactive approach of saying, how do we build consumer AI technology in a way that’s more ethical? I was talking to Sam Altman about the climate impact of AI, especially these large language models and generative AI systems.

We're transitioning from a sleepy capital city into a midsize-to-major city," Jonathan Melton, a member of Raleigh's City Council, told me. The first wants to solve the problem of too little housing by, well, building more housing. But Melton and the YIMBYs' vision rankled some Raleigh residents who eventually started to push back on what they considered extreme pro-development policies. The new buses seem like a great idea, but as with all these changes, residents are worried that the route will have unintended consequences. It's worth noting, too, that most Raleigh residents, even those who oppose the current pace of development, point to some positives.
