Tecoluca, El Salvador CNN —Sunlight pours into the cavernous building. Opened less than two years ago, it is already an iconic feature of the “new El Salvador” of President Nayib Bukele. The cells are meticulously clean — an intentional and stark contrast to the dingy and squalid prisons of El Salvador’s past. He even created his own clique, “Crazy Criminals,” now tattooed across his back, after he returned to El Salvador. Critics inside and outside El Salvador question the veracity of the government’s crime data and claimed success over the gangs.

Matthew is serving a 7-year prison sentence in Singapore's Changi Prison for trafficking meth. Officials from the Singapore Prison Service say they encourage guards to think of themselves as “Captains of Life,” helping rehabilitate the prison population. Officials did not allow CNN to visit Institution A1, where more than 40 death row inmates await the same fate. Before each execution, authorities organize a professional photo shoot in which inmates trade their prison uniforms for civilian clothes. Hong Kong’s population is around 25% larger than Singapore’s, and it does not impose the death penalty for drug offenses.

But those failing to tempt their child to eat their broccoli can take solace, as research has found that picky eating is largely down to genes rather than environment. They found that non-identical twin pairs were much less similar when it came to picky eating than identical twin pairs. Picky eating “often causes a lot of stress for the children and their families,” Moritz Herle, a researcher at King’s College London and one of the study’s lead authors, said. The study found that environmental factors can, however, have an impact on a child’s food pickiness when they are a toddler. Abigail Pickard, a researcher in developmental child psychology at Aston University who wasn’t involved in the research, told CNN that picky eating is “quite common” in children.

CNN —Do you ever find yourself comparing the size of your child with those of their classmates and worrying about their health? In her new book, “Kids Thrive at Every Size,” Castle aims to offer a new model for assessing and addressing kids’ health. Weight-focused versus whole child healthThe way children’s health has been assessed has often centered greatly on their size and shape, Castle said. “Or we look at a child with a larger body and say, ‘Hey, that doesn’t fit our norm.’”There are a few problems with this approach. … You choose what you want, but fruit is really important to your overall eating pattern, and it’s important for you to get some at school,’” Castle added.

CNN —A daily spoonful of olive oil could lower your risk of dying from dementia, according to a new study by Harvard scientists. Olive oil can be a healthy, tasty addition to foods such as sandwiches and salads. Replacing 5 grams — around 1.2 teaspoons — of margarine or mayonnaise consumed daily with olive oil was associated with an 8% to 14% lower risk of death from dementia. “It is also possible that olive oil has an indirect effect on brain health by benefiting cardiovascular health,” she added. Besides cooking with olive oil, you can also use it to make salad dressings or vinaigrettes, mayonnaise, pesto or bread dip.

CNN —What you eat and don’t eat can reduce your risk of medical conditions such as heart disease and cancer and increase life expectancy, according to decades of research. Studies have linked highly processed meat with negative health outcomes, so once again look for minimally processed whole foods. I’d also urge them to cut out ultraprocessed foods, which includes junk food like chips and candies. This is not easy to do because of the sheer amount of sugar-sweetened beverages and ultra-processed food around us. If so, you may end up consuming primarily ultra-processed food, including fast food.

Whether olive oil is linked with risk of dementia-related death had never been studied until now, according to the authors. Over a follow-up period of 28 years, regardless of diet quality, eating more than half a tablespoon of olive oil per day was associated with a 28% lower risk of dying from dementia, compared with participants who never or rarely consumed olive oil. Additionally, replacing a daily teaspoon of mayonnaise or margarine with the same amount of olive oil was correlated with an 8% to 14% lower risk of dementia-related death, the authors found. “It is also possible that olive oil has an indirect effect on brain health by benefiting cardiovascular health,” she added.
