  + stars: | 2024-04-24 | by ( Joseph Bernstein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Why was this Seder different from all other Seders? Start with the setup: a glittering table set for 100, running the length of a drafty warehouse in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Also unlike most seders, this one, on Thursday night (before the start of the holiday), featured a D.J. Guests at the Seder and past parties have included Brett Gelman, the actor; Samantha Ronson, the D.J. ; Richard Kind, the actor; Chi Ossé, the Brooklyn city councilman; and the actor David Schwimmer.

Some students wore kaffiyehs, the traditional Palestinian scarf, while others wore Jewish skullcaps. They distributed handmade Haggadahs — prayer books for the Passover holiday — and read prayers in Hebrew, keeping to the traditional order. But there were also there were changes and additions, like a watermelon on the Seder plate to represent the flag of Palestine. There were repeated references to the suffering of the Palestinian people and the need to ensure their liberation. There was grape juice instead of wine to respect the alcohol-free encampment, which was started last Wednesday and, despite a police crackdown last week, was stretching into its sixth day.

On Oct. 17, 1975, New Yorkers learned from the morning papers that the city was more or less finished. The big bill — $453 million that City Hall owed its creditors after years of borrowing — was due at 4 o’clock that afternoon. It depended on the teachers’ union tapping its pension funds to buy bonds from the Municipal Assistance Corporation. Mr. Ravitch had a well-earned reputation as a top-drawer fixer, and the governor was essentially asking him to save New York City. Mr. Ravitch and Mr. Shanker talked all night, but they parted without a resolution.

“Parade” speaks to historical antisemitism and mob violence, and it forces us to see how antisemitism and racism are inextricably linked, underscoring how the pursuit of justice fails in a broken judicial system. The only other person the police considered making a suspect in the murder was a Black man, the night watchman of the pencil factory. In the show, the prosecutor on the case has been instructed to deliver a quick conviction, and he casually states that hanging a Black man “ain’t enough this time. We gotta do better.” He knows that pinning the crime on a Jewish man will cast the outcome in a different light than pinning it on a Black man: He can knock the Jewish man down a peg, whereas the Black man’s social status has no farther to fall. A Black woman and a Jewish woman, undone by the same system, having a picnic.

The rain had stopped, but the trees were still full of water. As we hurried along 70th Street, an older woman who was walking a dog stopped us. She said she had lived in the neighborhood for decades but had lost her way: Failing eyesight had clouded her sense of direction. “For matzo ball soup off Second Avenue,” we exclaimed. She may have been losing her eyesight, but she knew her way around a bowl of matzo ball soup.

Stephen Speranza for The New York TimesHe also pointed me toward Second Avenue Deli, where, in under an hour, you can enjoy matzo ball soup with the most beautiful pale bronze broth and a manageable pastrami on rye. (A tip: The Upper East Side location of the deli has a Second Avenue bar above it.)
