A Dartmouth College sorority and two members of a fraternity were charged in connection with the drowning death of Won Jang, whose body was found over the summer in the Connecticut River following an off-campus party, police said. They are both members of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity, the same one Jang belonged to. Police said sorority members hosted the July 6 party and members of the fraternity who were over 21 purchased and supplied alcohol. The fraternity and sorority were immediately suspended after Jang’s death. These organizations, as well as all Dartmouth students and community members, have a responsibility to ensure Dartmouth remains a safe, respectful, equitable, and inclusive community for students, faculty, and staff,” the college said in a statement.

Opinion | Three Theories of the Trump Cabinet
  + stars: | 2024-11-23 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It did seem, at least, that the appointments to Trump’s cabinet might help us make plausible statements about the trajectory of his administration. That Trump has picked more loyalists than last time is true, inevitable and not especially useful in terms of figuring out how exactly (apart from never appointing a special prosecutor to investigate the boss!) That some of his nominees are eccentric or unfit-seeming and others are more conventional is likewise to be expected. Neither observation gives us a general theory of Trump 2.0. Instead, let’s consider three subtheories of how this cabinet might actually work.

The Texas Board of Education narrowly voted Friday to allow Bible-based curriculum in elementary schools. Greg Abbott has voiced support for the lesson plans, which were provided by the state’s education agency that oversees the more than 5 million students in Texas public schools. Staci Childs, who is an attorney and a Democrat who voted against the Bible curriculum at Friday's hearing, said she believes it will be challenged in court. The new Texas curriculum follows Republican-led efforts in neighboring states to give religion more of a presence in public schools. The Texas Education Agency, which oversees public education for students statewide, created its instruction materials after a law passed in 2023 by the GOP-controlled Legislature required the agency to do so.

Pam Bondi, who Donald Trump tapped last night for attorney general after former Representative Matt Gaetz dropped his bid, is arriving on the national stage with a smaller profile and less political baggage than Gaetz. Bondi began working as an assistant state attorney in the Tampa area in the 1990s, before becoming Florida’s first female attorney general in 2011. Like Gaetz, Bondi is a Trump loyalist. She served on Trump’s legal team during his first impeachment and oversaw the filing of voting-related lawsuits in battleground states. He has vowed to purge the agency of what he calls “deep state” foes — suggesting an end to the department’s longstanding practice of independence.

Donald J. Trump’s social media company is considering developing a cryptocurrency payment service, according to a trademark application filed this week, the latest sign of the president-elect’s embrace of the crypto industry. Trump Media & Technology Group filed an application on Monday for a service called TruthFi, which it described as a platform for crypto payments, financial custody services and trading in digital assets. But the initiative appears to be a bid by Trump Media to diversify its business beyond Truth Social, a social media platform whose business relies on Mr. Trump to continuously post messages to his most loyal supporters. Any large-scale crypto project would most likely require Trump Media to acquire another firm, given that it has fewer than three dozen employees. This week, shares in the crypto trading platform Bakkt surged after The Financial Times reported that Trump Media was in talks to buy it.

Biden, whose administration has sent billions of dollars in weaponry to Ukraine, recently lifted long-held restrictions on Kyiv's use of American-made longer-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia. The court also issued a warrant for the arrest of Hamas’s military chief, Muhammad Deif, accusing him, too, of crimes against humanity, including murder, hostage taking and sexual violence. Israel has said that it killed Mr. Deif in an airstrike, but the court said it could not determine whether he was dead. Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Gallant are unlikely to find themselves in a courtroom standing trial on the charges anytime soon. The court has no police force to make arrests and neither Israel nor its chief ally, the United States, is among its member nations. But the order carries significant moral weight, it is likely to restrict the leaders’ travel around the world, and it further isolates Israel as it prosecutes wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

Gaetz Withdrew From Attorney General Consideration

Matt Gaetz, the former Florida congressman who Donald Trump tapped last week as his choice for attorney general, announced today that he would withdraw from consideration. Gaetz has faced a torrent of scrutiny over allegations of sex trafficking and drug use, which he has denied. After meetings on Capitol Hill yesterday, Gaetz told people close to him that at least four Republican senators opposed his nomination — enough to block his confirmation. The storm surrounding Gaetz, personally disliked by lawmakers in both parties, has drawn some attention away from Trump’s other contested picks. The office of the city attorney of Monterey, Calif., released a redacted police file yesterday containing the accusation of a woman who said that Hegseth raped her in 2017.

The historic growth is expected to continue, with analysts estimating more than $200 billion in revenue next year. The company reported revenue of $35.08 billion in the quarter, representing a 94% year-over-year surge and a 492% increase from its third quarter in fiscal year 2023. The massive breakout in Nvidia's revenue growth occurred shortly after OpenAi introduced ChatGPT in November 2022, which was during the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2023. Big retailers’ fortunes are diverging as the holiday shopping season gets underway. On Wednesday, Target cited “lingering softness in discretionary categories” as a top factor in its disappointing third-quarter sales, as many budget-conscious shoppers continue to focus on necessities. It’s the latest sign that discounts will be the driving force this holiday season, as they’ve been for much of this year. “We’re starting to get back to normal here.”U.S. retail sales rose 0.4% overall in October, federal data showed last month, beating analysts’ forecasts. CFRA Research says investors should temper expectationsJustin Sullivan/GettyAccording to CFRA Research analyst Angelo Zino, investors should manage expectations around guidance for Nvidia's highly anticipated Blackwell launch. Still, Zino expects Blackwell chips will be sold out for much of 2025. "We expect Blackwell to be supply constrained through CY 25, given heightened demand from hyperscalers to support next-generation data centers. In addition to Blackwell expectations/performance concerns that will likely dominate NVDA's Q&A session on the call, we expect investors to dissect any comments on tariffs/Sovereign AI after Trump's victory," Zino said.
