Opinion: How is Netanyahu still in power?

View more opinion on CNNCNN —A recent visitor to Israel told me about a conversation in which he noted that Benjamin Netanyahu is the worst prime minister in modern Israel’s history. Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel are becoming increasingly isolated internationally, though experts say this could fortify the prime minister domestically. Israel’s longest-serving prime minister had been largely successful politically, but his personal style and alleged corruption turned many Israelis against him. Are there five courageous members of Likud willing to take the necessary action to move Israel beyond Netanyahu? That is unlikely to happen, however, as long as Netanyahu remains in power.

He lay on top of his young sons, trying to shield them with his body, he said. The military had forced them and dozens of other villagers under a baobab tree. “They shot at us all,” said Daouda, a farmer who had survived for years in jihadist-controlled territory only to be shot at by the military that was supposed to protect him. The mass killings in Daouda’s village and a nearby hamlet in February were among the deadliest in a decade of upheaval in Burkina Faso, a country torn apart by the Islamist insurgencies that have swept across parts of western Africa. Burkina Faso has faced such relentless assaults from extremist groups affiliated with Al Qaeda and the Islamic State that it topped the Global Terrorism Index last year, becoming the nation hardest hit by terrorism in the world.

CNN —Elon Musk, who spends much of his time on futuristic endeavors, took a step into history on Monday. Like in other entities where an upsurge in antisemitic activity started making headlines, Musk was taking performative action at Auschwitz. It was an effort to appear to be taking action while doing nothing. After his visit to the death camp, Musk appeared at a conference on antisemitism in nearby Krakow, Poland. President Claudine Gay was asked in Congress if calls for genocide against Jews violate Harvard rules against bullying and harassment.

Mr. Kissinger was not uncomfortable with that dynamic. From the side of the free world, Mr. Kissinger backed genocidal campaigns — by Pakistan against Bengalis and by Indonesia against the East Timorese. The generous defense is that Mr. Kissinger represented an ethos that saw the ends (the defeat of the Soviet Union and revolutionary Communism) as justifying the means. Mr. Kissinger was fixated on credibility, the idea that America must impose a price on those who ignore our demands to shape the decisions of others in the future. Mr. Kissinger lived half of his life after he left government.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland considered a resolution to call for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war on Monday, potentially joining nearly a dozen other U.S. cities from Michigan to Georgia that have supported the same. The resolution before the Oakland City Council also calls for the unrestricted entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza and a restoration of basic services, as well as “respect for international law” and the release of all hostages. A temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, which Qatar helped broker, is currently in place. “It raises an interesting question on where they are getting this mandate to speak for the people in their city when nobody elected a city council person because of their stance on Middle East peace,” he said. Now, city councils are just the latest arena where intense debates over the war and the United States' support for Israel are playing out.

“I hear the screaming, I hear the bikes, and I hear the gunshots.”Aliza Samuel, 24, returned to the site of the deadly Nova festival attack by Hamas militants, in southern Israel, on October 7. “Enjoy,” the Hamas militants said in English, as they laughed, before shooting the three men and one woman at point-blank range, she said. Hamas and Israel traded blame over a deadly explosion at a hospital in Gaza City on Tuesday. The White House said that after its own analysis, it concluded Israel is not responsible. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe current US assessment is that Israel isn't to blame for Tuesday's deadly explosion at a hospital in Gaza, a White House official said on Wednesday following an independent analysis of the incident. Noam had joined up with a cohort of Israeli soldiers sent to liberate the kibbutz.

Israel appears to be preparing for a ground invasion of Gaza where it hopes to wipe out Hamas. The attacks prompted a swift and strong counter response from Israel which declared war on Hamas and vowed to lay siege to Gaza. But even the total eradication of Hamas would fail to solve the tensions between Israel and Palestinians, Telhami said. "If Israel wipes out Hamas and leaves Gaza, either Hamas resurges or a more violent option rises," he said. The near future almost certainly includes more civilian deaths and an escalation of violence in Gaza , according to experts.

Reports of women stripped naked and paraded by fighters in Gaza, toddlers kidnapped alongside Holocaust survivors, homes burst into by terrorists hunting down Jews. The last one, with its supposed vision of a peaceful Palestinian state living side by side with Israel. I spent nearly three years at the Trump White House attempting to reach a peace deal between Israel and its Palestinian neighbors. (Indeed, the peace plan we crafted was rejected by the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah before they even read it.) Israel cannot achieve peace with Palestinians when a segment of the Palestinian population still intends to destroy it.

Size of Jurassic sea giant found, study says

The findings from the Late Jurassic period, though fragmentary, suggest the pliosaur was about twice the size of a killer whale — and move lead study author David Martill closer to redemption. However, he cautioned that an increase in length corresponds with an “exponential increase in volume … placing a biological limit on the upper size pliosaurs could reach.” Smith wasn’t involved in the study. Pliosaurs were “a group of large carnivorous marine reptiles characterized by massive heads, short necks and streamlined tear-shaped bodies,” according to Britannica. Benton wasn’t involved in the study. “Here is a marine reptile as large as a sperm whale, and there’s nothing like it around today.”
Inside them were oranges. Oranges, the fruit. Over the next three days, 8,000 people in Ivrea would throw 900 tons of oranges at one another, one orange at a time, while tens of thousands of other people watched. They would throw the oranges very hard, very viciously, often while screaming profanities at their targets or yowling like Braveheart. And on that day in February, three years of constrained energy was due to explode all at once.
A Florida man pleaded guilty to criminal mischief and reckless driving after using his pick-up truck to vandalize a rainbow-colored Pride road crossing in West Palm Beach, Florida, in June 2021. The caption reads: “Burning rubber on a rainbow street was categorized as a hate crime but a trans terrorist massacring Christian children was not.”U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican, introduced a senate resolution to name the Nashville shooting a hate crime (here). John Kennedy, another Republican Senator, asked Attorney General Merrick Garland if a hate crime investigation would be opened on March 28 at a senate hearing (here). Although a man who vandalized a Pride crosswalk in Florida was initially arrested for criminal mischief, reckless driving, and evidence of prejudice (also referred to as a hate crime), he was ultimately charged with the first two only.
Ron DeSantis weighed in on the jury's verdict on the Parkland shooter. Ron DeSantis says the Parkland shooter should have been given the death penalty and not a life sentence in prison. "I think that — if you have a death penalty at all — this is a case where you're massacring those students with premeditation, in utter disregard for basic humanity, that you deserve the death penalty," DeSantis said. Jury foreman Benjamin Thomas told CBS Miami that all but one of the twelve jurors thought the gunman should be given the death penalty. All the jurors would have had to unanimously agree to recommend the death penalty.
