Robert Pattinson is re-teaming with his “Tenet” director Christopher Nolan for the filmmaker’s closely guarded project at Universal Pictures, Variety has confirmed. Universal and Nolan’s follow-up to their Oscar-winning drama “Oppenheimer” is projecting a production start date sometime in the first half of 2025. Warner Bros. is looking to film a sequel to his 2022 blockbuster “The Batman,” in which the actor would reprise his leading turn as the DC Comics superhero. Universal has set a July 17, 2026 release date for the project, which will release in theaters and Imax.

Protesters opposed to Tesla’s expansion of its plant near Berlin were holding out in trees Tuesday as German police climbed up ladders and cut down rope structures in an attempt to clear their forested camp. In May, the protesters clashed with police as some attempted to storm the facility, the US carmaker’s only European gigafactory, which employs some 12,000 staff. Led by the Disrupt Tesla group, protesters argue that plans to double the factory’s size will damage the environment. “There are still people in the trees here who are resisting,” said Mila, a spokesperson for the protest camp. Although some protesters had left of their own accord after police announced the clearance Tuesday, the police said “there are currently still people in trees and rope structures” and the effort to clear the camp was therefore ongoing.

New York CNN —Intel’s struggling chip-making business got a boost Monday from a high-profile client: Amazon. Intel Foundry and Amazon Web Services will coinvest in a custom chip design for the latter and “announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar framework,” according to a release. “Specifically, Intel Foundry will produce an AI fabric chip for AWS on Intel 18A,” Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said in the statement Monday. The new deal, along with a $3 billion grant from the US government to boost domestic chip making and make chips for the US military, “demonstrates the continued progress we are making to build a world-class foundry business,” Intel said in the statement. Intel has changed its business model to try to become a global chip manufacturer to rival Taiwan’s TSMC.

TOKYO — U.S. opponents of a Japanese steelmaker’s $14.9 billion bid for U.S. Steel cite concerns about national security and a reluctance to relinquish a storied American company. That could complicate efforts to strengthen ties with Japan, a key U.S. ally, in an effort to counter China’s growing influence in the Asia-Pacific and around the world. Washington has also been pushing Tokyo to align itself with U.S. export controls that limit China’s ability to produce advanced semiconductors. The opposition to the deal “also places Japan in the unenviable company of China in terms of Washington’s politicization of economic issues,” Kingston said in an email. ☆ BMW downgrades 2024 outlook over brake issues and weak demand in China

BMW cut its profit margin forecast for the year Tuesday due to sluggish demand in China, its key market, and problems related to a braking system supplied by Continental, sending the carmaker’s shares close to a two-year low. The German luxury carmaker said delivery hold-ups linked to the braking system would have a negative effect on sales in the second half of the year, adding that more than 1.5 million cars were affected. Overall, BMW said, it will incur “a high three-digit-million amount” in warranty costs in the third quarter as a result. BMW also flagged ongoing muted demand in China affecting sales in the country, joining the automakers facing difficulties in the world’s second-biggest economy, which is also the world’s largest auto market. “Despite stimulus measures from the government, consumer sentiment remains weak,” BMW said.

It’s worked especially well for Nvidia, a 30-year-old tech company whose specialized chips now account for 90% of AI-related chip sales. Since 2019, Nvidia’s stock has soared 3,000% — minting millionaires among its rank and file. Things got worse for Nvidia on Tuesday, when shares fell 9.5%, wiping $279 billion off its value. As my colleague David Goldman noted, only 27 companies on Earth are worth as much as Nvidia lost on Tuesday.
