Taipei, Taiwan CNN —China’s coast guard detained a Taiwanese fishing vessel and its five-member crew near the mainland’s southeast coast on Tuesday night, according to Taiwan authorities, in the latest flare-up of tensions in waters around a group of frontline islands controlled by Taipei. In a statement, Taiwan’s coast guard said the fishing boat, Tachinman 88, was intercepted by two Chinese coast guard vessels near the Kinmen islands, which lie just miles from the Chinese city of Xiamen. China coast guard officers boarded the fishing boat and then escorted it to a nearby Chinese port, the statement said, adding that three Taiwan coast guard vessels answered a call for help but retreated to avoid conflict when they were outnumbered by their Chinese counterparts. The Taiwan coast guard demanded the immediate release of the boat and crew members. In late February, Chinese coast guard officers intercepted and boarded a Taiwanese tourist boat for inspection, an unprecedented move that startled Taiwanese passengers.

Uncanny disquiet governs the stories in this collection. In “Heads,” Jimi Hendrix, who has appeared elsewhere in Allen’s fiction, spends late nights with the painter Francis Bacon, the two talking about art-making and life while Jimi occasionally strums his guitar. In the collection’s title story, Allen sends the boxer Jack Johnson to Australia for a high-profile fight, where his celebrity and Blackness lead to singular experiences at racialized extremes of local life. On description alone, you might think this is merely weird and wise comedy, but I think Allen has more in common with Donald Glover than George Saunders. These are difficult, inventive stories that, at their best, occupy a range of frequencies and otherworldly places with — to borrow Allen’s brilliant three-word description of Jimi Hendrix’s way with music — a “fierce itching dazzle.”

CNN —For a man whose life has been marked by ceaseless public interest in his every move, Prince Harry’s performance over the last few days has felt remarkably amateur. The issue of phone hacking by Britain’s tabloid media is far more insidious than some coverage of Harry’s testimony might suggest. In 2021, it settled phone hacking claims with other actors including Martin Clunes and David Walliams, and issued an apology. So much of Harry’s life and experience is unrelatable and apparently contradictory. But none of us is ever likely to be judged as exhaustively — or as loudly — as Prince Harry.

Trump said he was sorry to Melania after a report that he's privately blaming her for faulty election advice. The New York Times reported that Trump is trying to cast the blame on others for his backing of Mehmet Oz. "I'd like to apologize to Melania and Sean Hannity for all of the Fake News and fictional stories," Trump said in a message on his Truth Social platform. In reality, Trump's endorsement of Oz was a major factor in the GOP primary. "I am not sure I have," Trump told GOP pollster Frank Luntz, who served as moderator of the event.

When reports emerged that the Elon Musk-operated Twitter planned to require users to pay to keep their blue verification badges, a question blossomed in newsrooms: Would media companies front the bill for their reporters? One media company, however, would certainly cover the cost of Twitter verification: Puck. Musk wrote on Twitter last week that he planned to charge $8 per month for a "Twitter Blue" subscription that would include verification. Long considered Twitter power users, journalists make up a large contingent of verified users on the platform, along with celebrities, organizations, and brands.
