ImagePink RosesDear Diary:I woke up early on a September Sunday somewhat grumpy for reasons I cannot remember. As I skulked through Carroll Gardens doing my errands for the day, the nice weather lifted my spirits slightly. My last stop was a flower shop for something to bring home to my partner. Later, walking down my block with the bunch of pink roses I had picked out, I heard a man say: “Wow! ¡Qué lindo!”I turned and saw my barber and his buddies working on a car.

Burton heard stories of Reeves when he would visit relatives in Oklahoma, and he became determined to learn more. Reeves wasn’t the first or only Black marshal of the period, but he became the most famous. Sidney Thompson caught the Reeves bug when he saw Morgan Freeman describing Reeves as his dream role in a TV interview. (It was widely reported last year that Freeman was developing his own Bass Reeves series, “Twin Territories,” for Amazon.) Burton’s book is deeply researched, yet its most memorable lines ring like tall tales passed down through generations.

A recent report from Price4Limo, an event transportation company, found that being laid off after a corporate party isn't as uncommon as some may think. After surveying over 1,000 corporate Americans who've attended an office party in the past year, Price4Limo found that 14% of survey respondents say their jobs were terminated shortly after an office party, losing an average salary of $60,597.36. Price4Limo's report shows that 35% of respondents report having strained relationships with colleagues after a work party. On the flip side, practicing office party etiquette can have some benefits, like connecting with others in a more organic setting. "Whether it's co-workers, managers, or clients, the office party is a great time for networking."

For many people, saying "I'm sorry" after certain situations, even those that don't require an apology, is second nature. Here are three common scenarios where you might be tempted to over-apologize, and what to consider saying instead. "'I'm sorry' is often a phrase that people use when they need to fill space," Lindo says. You might decide to interject by saying, "Sorry, but I'd like to weigh in." "People use 'I'm sorry' in these situations to penetrate the conversation and have their voice heard when they don't have to."
