After we published our research, the story of driving rats went viral in the media. The tale of rat tailsIt wasn’t just the effects of anticipation on rat behavior that caught our attention. While it’s vital to study negative emotions such as fear and stress, positive experiences also shape the brain in significant ways. As animals – human or otherwise – navigate the unpredictability of life, anticipating positive experiences helps drive a persistence to keep searching for life’s rewards. That’s a lesson my lab rats have taught me well.

“Social media is doing harm to our kids, and I’m calling time on it,” Albanese said at a news conference. A number of countries have already vowed to curb social media use by children through legislation, though Australia’s policy is one of the most stringent. No jurisdiction so far has tried using age-verification methods such as biometrics or government identification to enforce a social media age cut-off, two of the methods being trialed. Mick Tsickas / AP“The onus will be on social media platforms to demonstrate they are taking reasonable steps to prevent access,” Albanese said. Last year, France proposed a ban on social media for those under 15, though users were able to avoid the ban with parental consent.

In these conversations with patients who are wary of religion, Callahan slips in another detail: He’s an atheist himself. Callahan is one of a growing number of openly atheist chaplains working in institutions around the country. Though the term “atheist chaplain” might sound like an oxymoron, he doesn’t see a contradiction between his beliefs and the work of tending to the human spirit. Other atheist chaplains don’t shy away from religion at all, instead helping people explore faith and spirituality in nontraditional ways. There may be few atheist and nonreligious chaplains right now, but as Callahan sees it, their numbers only stand to grow.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday fired his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, a long rumored move that was announced on Election Day in the United States. Gallant will be replaced by Foreign Minister Israel Katz, Netanyahu said in a statement. “In the midst of a war, more than ever, full trust is required between the prime minister and the minister of defense,” Netanyahu said. Netanyahu's decision was welcomed by his ultranationalist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who congratulated the prime minister on the move. NEW YORK — Anthony Volpe’s jersey was caked in dirt as he fielded grounders at shortstop before the ninth inning of Game 4 of the World Series. Consuming added sugar has become a part of life, woven into almost every meal. Americans 2 years and older consume on average 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day, according to the most recent government data available. Put sugary foods in their rightful placeSave sugary foods for desserts; don’t allow them to creep into every part of your diet. “This means enjoy the sugar that you do eat by baking together and savoring together, making the (added) sugar that you do eat part of celebrating life,” she said. New York CNN —A broken McDonald’s McFlurry machine, arguably one of life’s greatest nuisances, has finally been solved thanks to a court ruling. McDonald’s franchises haven’t been able to fix the soft serve ice cream machines on their own because manufacturing company Taylor owns the copyright and exclusive rights to fix the machines — until now. The inability to make timely fixes has been a bane of the customers’ existence, so much so, that there’s a third-party website called McBroken.com that tracks their availability. Broken ice cream machines have been such a blemish on McDonald’s reputation that even competitors mock them for it. And perhaps a fix can’t come quick enough: Nearly 15% of ice cream machines are broken as of Monday, according to McBroken.

But witchcraft, to Green, isn’t about finding answers to life’s big questions (or death’s, for that matter). “Knowing is overrated.”The way Green practices witchcraft defies stereotypes of broomstick-wielding, cauldron-toting, pointy-hatted witches. As myths about Milton and Helene spread, interest in chemtrails increased too on Google search and social media. Despite the lack of evidence to support it, the so-called chemtrail conspiracy theory has endured for decades. Some of the promotion of the conspiracy theory has taken on a distinctively antisemitic tone. Peters previously promoted the unhinged conspiracy theory that ballots were flown from Asia as part of a plot to steal the 2020 election from President Trump. Microsoft on Tuesday announced a major update to Copilot, its AI system, that it says marks the first step toward creating an “AI companion” for users. The updated Copilot has new capabilities, including real-time voice interactions and the ability to interpret images and text on users’ screens. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman contends that people need AI to be more than a productivity tool, they need it to be a kind of digital friend. “I think in the future, the first thought you’re going to have is, ‘Hey, Copilot,’” Suleyman told CNN in an interview ahead of Tuesday’s announcement.

The El Niño of 252 million years ago would have originated in the Panthalassic Ocean, a body of water much larger than today’s Pacific that could hold more heat, which in turn would have strengthened and sustained El Niño effects. The planet had experienced similar episodes earlier but they hadn’t triggered a mass extinction. A prolonged and intense El Niño also explained why extinctions had begun on land before they occurred in the ocean, the study said. This data showed how temperature rose at different latitudes as the mass extinction unfolded. El Niño events today are known to cause coral bleaching and mass mortality of fish, the study noted, but the ecological impact and future trajectory of El Niño events in a warming climate are unknown.
