Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are promising to tame the federal government. Substantial changes to the federal budget would most likely require action from legislators, though Trump transition officials are reportedly looking for ways to short-circuit Congress' power over spending. Key lines from Kamala Harris vs. Fox News

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has not submitted to many interviews with journalists during her short presidential campaign, and certainly none with conservative media. When Baier asked if this was an evolution in her thinking, Harris pointed to her record as a prosecutor taking on transnational criminal organizations. From immigration, Baier pivoted to the wedge topic of gender. When Baier asked if there were concerns about Biden’s abilities raised, Harris said:Bret, Joe Biden is not on the ballot. And Donald Trump is.

Pretty much since they arrived, Mr. Muir and his family have been trying and failing to find a single-family house for no more than $500,000. “I’m like, ‘Wow, I thought this would be a more affordable place to live,’” said Mr. Muir, who is 44 and works in financial services. They disagree, however, about whether Ms. Harris’s plan would actually do that. (Economists also agree that former President Donald J. Trump’s housing plan, which aims to free up housing by deporting immigrants, would probably make the housing crisis worse by devastating the construction work force). Ms. Harris’s main challenge will be convincing them to build.

Kanny is a startup that uses character assessments to improve the hiring processes for employers. My coworkers — geniuses, all — made the evaluation using a tool from the startup Kanny, which aims to improve hiring by assessing what it calls a job candidate's work character. It is character," Kanny CEO and cofounder Sean Vassilaros told me. Yet the control that job seekers have, Vassilaros said, is in shaping the narrative of who they are. Her quandary was encapsulated in the debate’s very first question, when Ms. Harris was asked if she thought Americans were better off now than they were four years ago. WASHINGTON — Despite mounting opposition from his own party, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., vowed Tuesday to stay the course and put his government funding package on the House floor on Wednesday. His initial strategy to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month is expected to fail and deal House Republicans an embarrassing blow. Due to their paper-thin majority, Republicans can afford only a handful of GOP defections on the vote, and many more than that have publicly voiced their opposition. “I am in this to win this,” Johnson told reporters at his weekly news conference. Afterward, the speaker added: “We are going to put the SAVE Act and the CR together, and we’re going to move that through the process.

To understand anchovies, you need to understand umami. For most of history, just four tastes were recognized: sweet, sour, bitter and salty. He named the taste umami, after the Japanese word “umai,” which translates — very roughly — as savory taste. Preserved anchovies — whether salted, packed in oil or transformed into fish sauce — have extraordinarily high levels of umami. We know we need to be eating more whole foods, more plants, more good fats, more grains and pulses.

Increased cognitive function due to HIIT workouts was even seen in young adults, a February 2020 study showed, which researchers said indicated HIIT workouts may be both an efficient and effective way of combating cognitive decline as people age. “It always takes them by surprise.”Rowing machines are also a great choice for a high-intensity, low-impact workout, McCall said. “If you’re jumping up and down off a box, you’ll risk falling when you’re jumping back down. But over a structured brainstorming session in 2022, amid a weekend retreat with the Kentucky Rural-Urban Exchange, something clicked. Mr. Clay, 47, had a side project chronicling Kentucky’s Black Civil War veterans. Ms. Bishop, 34, during quiet hours alone studying the ecology of the Clay Hill Memorial Forest in Taylor County, Ky., had pondered the old stones that almost certainly marked the burial grounds of the once-enslaved, a forgotten memorial to a hidden past. An effort was born — the Enslaved People of Clay Hill, or EPOCH, Legacy Project — to officially recognize the burial ground. And a connection was made across the gulfs of race, age and geography.

Just hours after the article was published, Trump went online to set the record straight on his vice presidential search. Since 1940, the state has voted for the Republican presidential nominee in every election except for 1964 and 2008. And former President Donald Trump is virtually assured of winning the state this November, as he also did in 2016 and 2020. But an interesting thing happened on Tuesday: Trump won the GOP presidential primary, but former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley still won over 20 percent of the vote, despite her March exit from the race. With nearly all precincts reporting their results, Trump earned 461,663 votes (78.3 percent) to Haley's 128,168 votes (21.7 percent). But many suburban voters are also concerned about issues like the preservation of democracy, abortion rights, and environmental policy, which all strongly favor Biden.

DETROIT (AP) — Tesla sales fell sharply last quarter as competition increased worldwide, electric vehicle sales growth slowed, and price cuts failed to draw more buyers. In its letter to investors in January, Tesla predicted “notably lower” sales growth this year. In March it temporarily knocked $1,000 off the Model Y, its top-selling vehicle. During the quarter, Tesla lost production time in Germany after a suspected arson attack cut its power supply. But sales growth slowed toward the end of the year.

Why America hates its children
  + stars: | 2024-01-07 | by ( Lydia Kiesling | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +17 min
Time and again, I was struck by a public attitude toward children I seldom encountered in America: unequivocal support. In America, we socialize our children to see strangers not as helpers but as threats. Virtually every other industrialized nation provides more government aid for their children than America does. Children who are neglected — a loose term inextricably tied to poverty — are thrown into a foster-care system known for its propensity to harm children. From the tumult of the pandemic, the calls for America to care more for its children are getting louder.
