“In this time, it’s extremely important that we bring the voices of Afghan women forward,” Yousafzai said in a Zoom interview with NBC News. (The militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, is a separate organization from the Taliban in Afghanistan, but a close ally.) “The Taliban are attempting to make women invisible, in a way,” said Yousafzai, who graduated from Oxford University in 2020. Mani, who also serves as a producer, said she was working on a different documentary in Afghanistan when the Taliban takeover happened. “We need women’s demands and rights to be on the agenda where the future of Afghanistan is being discussed and decided.

After hitting two-decade highs nearing 8% late last year, mortgage rates have fallen, dipping nearly as low as 6% in September. Mortgage rates are expected to stay stuck above 6% for at least the next two years, according to economists and recent forecasts. Home sales are on track for their worst year since 1995 due to home-price growth and elevated mortgage rates. Mortgage rates are closely tied to the 10-year US Treasury yield. Billionaire investor Paul Tudor Jones last month said a swelling national debt under Trump would be frowned upon by the bond market.

A sharp drop in mortgage rates brought homebuyers off the fence in October after a slow summer. Sales were 2.9% higher than October of last year, marking the first annual increase in more than three years. While mortgage rates remain elevated, they are expected to stabilize.”There were 1.37 million units for sale at the end of October, an increase of 19.1% from October 2023. That is still high historically, but lower mortgage rates likely caused that share to drop. Mortgage rates are much higher now, at 7.05% on the 30-year fixed.

That's partly due to higher inventory levels, which rose 19% in October compared to last year. Existing home sales rose 3.4% in October, the group said. Sales rose 2.9% year-over-year for the first annual rise since July 2021 when Americans were still in the midst of a pandemic homebuying boom. Despite higher inventory levels, existing home prices have continued to rise, with the median existing home price climbing 4% in October to $407,200. Last week, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate ticked lower but remained elevated at 6.78%, three basis-points higher higher than the 52-week average, according to Freddie Mac.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected an attempt by Children's Health Defense, the anti-vaccine group founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to protect doctors being investigated in Washington state for allegedly spreading misinformation about the Covid-19 virus. The emergency application was denied by Justice Elena Kagan on behalf of the court. Circuit Court of Appeals, declined to impose injunctions blocking investigations led by the Washington Medical Commission. The Supreme Court did not ask the state to file a response to the application, suggesting that it was deemed lacking in legal merit. Two doctors subject to investigations, Richard Eggleston and Thomas Siler, had joined Kennedy's group in asking the court to weigh in.

CNN —This has been a blockbuster election year politically, so it’s fitting that a new movie shines a light on an ancient and highly secretive voting process: the selection of a new pope. Brían F. O'Byrne as Cardinal O'Malley (L) and Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Lawrence (R) in the movie "Conclave." They cast them in the Sistine Chapel, in front of the awe-inspiring sight of Michelangelo’s “Last Judgment,” writing their choices on paper ballots that are then burnt after being counted. The crowd waiting outside is informed that a pope has been elected when the chimney above the Sistine Chapel billows out white smoke. But many Republicans and Gaetz allies have touted his aggressive style as an essential attribute for an attorney general. The president-elect filled some of those spots Thursday evening, appointing a series of his own personal lawyers to run key sections of the Justice Department. Trump also announced his selection of Emile Bove, another member of his criminal defense team, to be principal associate attorney general. Now, while some of his colleagues in Congress expressed skepticism of his pick as attorney general, they said they are prepared for a detailed confirmation process. As attorney general, Gaetz would be in control of the FBI investigative files that detail the evidence the bureau uncovered.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s consistent campaign pledge to impose sweeping tariffs on products imported into the U.S. is likely to face stiff challenges in court and potentially pushback from Congress. There are potential legal limits to Trump’s authority, even though he has said he would unilaterally impose the increases. But a broad array of tariffs on allies “could cross the line,” especially as the Supreme Court has taken a generally pro-business stance in recent years, he added. During the Biden administration, the Supreme Court embraced a theory called the “major questions doctrine.” Biden’s ambitious plan to wipe out billions of dollars in student debt was one of the proposals the Supreme Court faulted. The Supreme Court declined to take up the issue.

Béla Károlyi, the gymnastics coach who rose to prominence by training Olympic all-around champions Nadia Comăneci and Mary Lou Retton, has died at 82, USA Gymnastics said in a statement on Saturday night. The governing body for the sport in the United States said Károlyi died on Friday, though the cause of death was not immediately clear. He quickly built his reputation in the United States after guiding Retton to gold at the 1984 Games. He was named the head coach of the 1992 Olympic team after years of his gymnasts excelling at domestic and international competitions, though many were plagued by injuries because of overtraining. Inside the Quest to Make Fusion Energy a Reality

The Quest to Build a Star on Earth Start-ups say we’re closer than ever to near-limitless, zero-carbon energy from fusion. Today’s fusion start-ups aren’t just preparing for this moment in the lab. Such advances helped the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory produce more fusion energy than the energy in the incoming laser beams, for the briefest of moments, in 2022. They also helped European researchers generate record amounts of fusion energy at a facility in Britain last year. What worries researchers is how much some fusion start-ups are promising, and how soon.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday dealt a setback to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in his defense against 2020 election interference charges in Georgia, turning away his attempt to transfer his case from state to federal court. His lawyers argued that the case should be moved because he was acting as a “federal officer” at the time and could therefore argue for immunity from prosecution. Circuit Court of Appeals concluding that because Meadows is no longer a federal official, the provision that would allow the case to be moved to federal court does not apply to him. The appeals court also found that even if he was deemed to be a federal officer, "the events giving rise to this criminal action were not related to Meadows' official duties." Meadows faces two counts in the sprawling Georgia election interference case over his role in efforts to keep Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s ambitious agenda could face pushback from an institution he has done much to shape: the Supreme Court. With a 6-3 conservative majority including three Trump appointees, the court has spent the last few years buffeted by criticism from the left. The Trump administration also suffered a big loss when in 2020 the court ruled 6-3 to extend workplace discrimination protections to LGBTQ employees, a decision that angered conservatives. During the Biden years, the court has set new precedents while ruling against the administration that in theory apply to Trump too. “The Supreme Court supermajority has given us no reason to expect that it will be anything other than be a rubber stamp for his worse impulses,” said Alex Aronson, who runs Court Accountability, a left-leaning legal group.

If he wins the election in November, he has pledged to follow a similar course on another contentious policy proposal: ending birthright citizenship. Under Trump’s proposal, at least one parent would need to be a citizen or legal resident for a child to receive birthright citizenship. Trump had pledged to end birthright citizenship when first running for president in 2015 and he raised it again in 2018. Opponents of birthright citizenship say that language means citizenship is denied to anyone whose parents are not legally in the country. Sometimes relevant information could be hard to determine, such as if the immigration status of an absent parent is not known to the other.
