Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela at Dodger Stadium in around 1981. And by age 20, he’d touched off a fan frenzy pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers. When he made the cover of Sports Illustrated, the headline read: “UNREAL!”As Valenzuela rose to stardom, “Fernando-mania” swept Los Angeles. His success helped heal old wounds in Los Angeles’ Mexican American community over the displacement of families before the building of Dodger Stadium. In 2018, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors apologized to women who had undergone coerced sterilizations from 1968 to 1974.

CNN —A lost Caravaggio painting that was almost mistakenly sold at auction for a bargain price has gone on display at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, after being rescued and restored. The oil on canvas work depicts Jesus wearing a crown of thorns with blood running down his face and onto his chest. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, better known simply as Caravaggio, is known for his visceral depictions of violence. “Ecce Homo” will be displayed at the Prado Museum until October 13. Both the previous owner and the buyer were keen for the painting to go on public display at the Prado, said Coll.

Six years later, certain that he was on the right path as an artist, he held his first solo exhibition. He soon moved to the state capital, Salvador, where he studied printmaking at the Escola de Belas Artes da Bahia. After a stint as director of the Museu de Arte da Bahia in the early 1980s, Araújo headed to New York, where he taught courses in graphic arts and sculpture at City College. When Araújo liked an artist, he made it his mission to buy every piece of theirs he could find. But while Araújo had been winning praise for supporting certain artists, he was criticized for not including others.

"We're reclaiming many things," said Samuel Zyman, the composer of the opera titled "Cuitlahuatzin," which uses a more formal version of the king's name. "This is a Mexican story, so why shouldn't it be in the Aztec language?" The opera featured actors in native costumes, face paint and feather headdresses. While it's not clear if the opera's organizers will offer more showings, some in attendance who likely saw their first-ever Nahuatl opera were clearly moved by Cuitlahuac's story. “When I was a kid, my bond was really with my grandparents,” said Lin-Manuel Miranda, the songwriter, actor, director and producer. “I would go to Puerto Rico with my family for a month every year. “I didn’t stay in a hotel, I stayed in town, I ate Puerto Rican food. That’s different than being a tourist.”Over the years, Mr. Miranda has become one of the most prominent advocates for Puerto Rico. Next month, he will bring his musical “Hamilton” back to San Juan’s Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré for two weeks, hosting a fund-raiser to support the Hispanic Federation and the Flamboyan Foundation, a charity devoted to educational equity in Puerto Rico.
