☆ Archegos’ Bill Hwang sentenced to 18 years in prison for massive U.S. fraud

Former billionaire investor Sung Kook “Bill” Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday over the collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost Wall Street banks more than $10 billion. Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, where a jury convicted Hwang in July on 10 criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud and market manipulation. Before sentencing Hwang, Hellerstein asked the defendant’s lawyer, Dani James, how she thought Hwang compared to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison for stealing $8 billion from users of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange. While Archegos eventually managed $36 billion, Hwang’s borrowing helped him amass $160 billion of exposure to stocks. Hwang’s co-defendant, former Archegos Chief Financial Officer Patrick Halligan, was convicted at the same trial on three criminal charges.

Images of the nude photos were found on the men’s phones and on Alcala’s iCloud account, according to the indictments. While the indictments don’t specify how the men came under suspicion, the attorney for one of Alcala’s alleged victims has said she reported an incident to the FBI, and one of McKnight’s alleged victims has said she reported him to his supervisor. Seven of the counts specify he took photographs of nude images he found on the victims’ phones, which were found on McKnight’s cell phone. In two of the incidents, McKnight took the alleged victims’ phones after arresting them, the indictment says. One of the former state trooper’s alleged victims described her experience as “really violating” in an interview with KFVS.

According to the federal indictment, Alcala would take women's phones during traffic stops in order to confirm their insurance coverage or vehicle registration. But Alcala searched their phones for nude images and took photos on his own personal phone, the indictment said. In one case, Alcala allegedly texted himself a video and deleted evidence of the text. The Missouri Department of Public Safety told NBC News that records show McKnight surrendered his state peace officer license, "which means he can never work as a Missouri law enforcement officer again." Ashley Johnson, special-agent-in-charge of the FBI St. Louis Division, told people not to hesitate to report uncomfortable encounters with officers.

The firm said it sees the S & P 500 soaring to 6,600 by the end of June 2025. Already, Trump's win has spurred a huge stock market rally, with the S & P 500 soaring 2.5% on Wednesday to notch its best postelection day in history. Since 1932, the S & P 500 has averaged a 152% gain over 50 months during bull runs. The strategist listed several stocks Evercore thinks could benefit from a Trump win, and some that could outperform even further from a red sweep. Trump's win "could bring more favorable regulatory environment — and WFC is one of the most regulatory-impacted names given outstanding asset cap," the firm said.

In the event of a Trump win but with a divided Congress, the S & P 500 is likely to remain flat in the days following the election, Emanuel wrote. Evercore ISI expects the S & P 500 falling in the 10 days after the election, to roughly 5,700, as markets re-price their expectations. 3Fourteen Research co-founder Pies expects a Harris win would translate into a drop in cyclical and small-cap stocks, and spur investors to turn to high-quality tech names.
