Percival Everett’s new novel, “James,” a retelling of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” from the perspective of Huck’s enslaved companion, won the National Book Award for fiction on Wednesday. Critics have called Everett’s retelling “a slyly funny masterpiece.”The National Book Award is the latest in a string of accolades for the 67-year-old author, who has dozens of books and short stories under his belt. One of Everett’s books, “Erasure,” was adapted in 2023 into a film, “American Fiction,” starring Jeffrey Wright. WASHINGTON — The House Oversight Committee announced Thursday that Republicans plan to create a subcommittee that would work with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy on President-elect Donald Trump's recently announced advisory group, the "Department of Government Efficiency." Greene and the Trump team didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. The lawmakers have already met and are working with the team, including Ramaswamy, a person familiar with the effort said. "We’re going to work very closely with Elon Musk and Ramaswamy, Comer said during an interview with Fox Business on Thursday. Greene has served on the Oversight Committee since Republicans retook the House majority in 2023.

Former billionaire investor Sung Kook “Bill” Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday over the collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost Wall Street banks more than $10 billion. Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, where a jury convicted Hwang in July on 10 criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud and market manipulation. Before sentencing Hwang, Hellerstein asked the defendant’s lawyer, Dani James, how she thought Hwang compared to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison for stealing $8 billion from users of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange. While Archegos eventually managed $36 billion, Hwang’s borrowing helped him amass $160 billion of exposure to stocks. Hwang’s co-defendant, former Archegos Chief Financial Officer Patrick Halligan, was convicted at the same trial on three criminal charges.

Marjorie Taylor Greene announced that she will chair a new oversight subcommittee in the next Congress that will work with the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. House Oversight Chair James Comer “intends to establish a new Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) for the 119th Congress,” a source familiar told CNN, confirming that Greene will chair the subcommittee. Winder, Georgia CNN —Colin Gray, the father of alleged Georgia school shooter Colt Gray, entered a not guilty plea Thursday morning to charges – including two counts of second-degree murder – alleging that he shares responsibility for the September shooting. Gray faces 29 charges, including two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of involuntary manslaughter. He was indicted on 55 counts, including four counts each of malice murder and felony murder. Colt Gray will be tried as an adult. Colin and Colt Gray have both been jailed since their arrests.

Goldman Sachs' list of top-performing longs in hedge funds has seen outsized gains in 2024, a sign that moves made by these firms have paid off this year. The bank's so-called very important positions, or "VIP," list has climbed about 30% year to date. Goldman strategist Ben Snider noted that hedge funds shifted somewhat to cyclical industrials from defensives in the third quarter, allowing them to benefit from the postelection rally.
