Disney is no longer letting new customers sign up for Hulu or Disney+ via Apple's App Store. Disney is now telling would-be customers to pay for subscriptions on Disney's own site, instead of on Apple's App Store — though people who've already started paying for either service via Apple can keep doing that. But the App Store split does represent a rift between two longtime partners, so it's definitely worth noting. Disney's rationale is clear here: When customers sign up for Disney subscription services via Apple, Apple takes up to 15% of the monthly fees those services generate. Just like Netflix in 2018, Disney has decided that the services Apple offers through its App Store — the ability to market to and bill a giant installed base — aren't worth giving up a meaningful chunk of revenue.

Read previewA new "Hellboy" movie is coming to theaters — but most people have no idea. "Hellboy: The Crooked Man" takes the hero back to the roots of Mignola's horror-tinged comics. Perhaps most surprisingly, "Hellboy: The Crooked Man" is not as disastrous as the marketing might suggest. Some believe Millennium Media made "The Crooked Man" on a small budget with the sole intention of keeping the rights to Hellboy. The director of 'Hellboy: The Crooked Man' said he knew the movie would face 'challenges'Jack Kesy as Hellboy and Adeline Rudolph as Bobbie Jo Song.

"It's a very momentum-driven market," said Ben Klein, the cofounder at the record label and music-marketing firm Hundred Days. Still, for some artists, albums can be a useful tool for marketing, streaming economics, and nourishing their biggest fans. "If you're capturing all of your fans and the fans are streaming 10 songs or they're streaming 30 songs, it actually makes a big difference on charting and streaming revenue." AdvertisementOf course, writing lots of quality songs for an album is easier said than done. And some artists are wary of letting social-media strategies or streaming incentives bleed into the creative process.

Davidson thinks the artificial intelligence plans Apple unveiled on Monday will lead to a new era for the iPhone and open up possibilities for the tech company as it asserts itself in the AI race. Analyst Gil Luria upgraded Apple to buy and raised his price target to $230 per share from $200, which suggests a roughly 19% upside from Monday's $193.12 close. Luria's upgrade comes on the heels of Apple's announcement of its long-awaited generative AI initiatives , which it calls "Apple Intelligence," at its Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, on Monday. That could lead to a much-needed iPhone upgrade cycle, Luria said, raising his fiscal year 2025 estimates above consensus on the expectation of an AI-driven boost for the smartphone maker. "Importantly, Apple is uniquely positioned to offer these capabilities, and may be the only one capable of doing so any time soon," Luria added.

Davidson's Gil Luria to upgrade shares to a buy. Apple shares have lagged major technology peers this year due in part to its failure to share a clear-cut AI plan. Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng was "encouraged by the financial implications" of the announcements, noting that new product features should help fuel an iPhone upgrade cycle . Lingering skepticism To be sure, other analysts worry that Apple's AI prospects may not be enough to power significant upgrades. "Contrary to consensus, we maintain the view that Apple's AI strategy will not lead to a significant iPhone upgrade cycle this fall."

But after a decade of doing that, iPhone sales are slowing, revenue is down, and the company, again, needs to find its next big thing. Apple's own outlook suggests poor iPhone sales will persist, especially as sales in China rapidly decline. The drawbacks of Cook's divestment from product design and development are now becoming clearer. Both the EU and the US cases would also make some people more likely to switch to a cheaper phone, which would threaten iPhone sales even further. New York CNN —Excitement over Monday’s eclipse is shining new light on a decades old song. A Spotify representative told CNN that searches for Tyler’s song have soared by nearly 50% in the US over the past week, and the streaming service is expecting that grow on Monday leading into the eclipse. Tyler’s song is the most popular song being added to user-generated “eclipse” playlists on Spotify in the US. The last time an eclipse happened in the US in 2017, sales for downloads of the song increased more than 500%, according to Billboard. Not bad for a song that was a number 1 hit for four weeks in 1983.

"I Am...Sasha Fierce""I Am...Sasha Fierce" was released in 2008. Columbia RecordsMetacritic score: 62/100What critics said: "The album's songs are divided into two parts, ballads of a purported personal nature on the first disc and more aggressive club tracks attributed to the singer's newly christened doppelganger on the second. "It's a momentum-murdering formula that makes for not only a disjointed listening experience but, with the slow songs presented first, an incoherent narrative. This problem would be negligible, particularly in the age of iTunes, if it weren't clear that Beyoncé intended to make an Album and wants it to be consumed as such." — Sal Cinquemani, Slant Magazine

Though Ozzy Osbourne left Black Sabbath in 1979, his wife, Sharon Osbourne, told Billboard any songs the band wrote — Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward — require the approval of all four members to license. Regardless of the social media feud, legal experts say if true, the unauthorized use of the samples would be a “clear-cut” case of copyright infringement. He didn't dispute it,” entertainment attorney Donald M. Woodard of Carter and Woodard told Business Insider. AdvertisementOsbourne's recent objection to West's sample would be considered a new copyright claim, as the license for use does not permit West to sample the song in perpetuity. In 2022, Chicago artist Marshall Jefferson accused the rapper of using his song “Move Your Body” in the West song “Flowers” without permission.

Where Has Tracy Chapman Been?

Despite some scattered performances on television and at awards shows, Chapman, 59, has remained almost entirely absent from the music world in recent years, having released her last studio album in 2008 and done her last tour in 2009. Since she first emerged in the late 1980s, she has always been known as a reclusive and private figure. But I am bit shy.”The acclaim for her Grammys performance — Taylor Swift could be seen singing along in the crowd — was a sign of how beloved Chapman remains. Combs’s note-for-note cover of “Fast Car” went to No. 2 on Billboard’s pop singles chart last year, and after the Grammys, Chapman’s original began shooting up iTunes’s download chart.

Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion have released diss tracks about each other. The latest celebrity feud is between Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj, and hip-hop experts are already weighing in on who won — so far. It all started on Friday when Megan dissed Nicki in her new single, "Hiss," prompting Nicki to reply with her own track. Although Megan didn't name anyone while taking a bevy of pointed jabs in the lyrics, many fans believed one line targeted Nicki Minaj and her husband, Kenneth Petty. "I don't think Megan thee Stallion is in the same breath as Nicki Minaj," Budden said.

Naveen Rao is VP of Generative AI at Databricks and co-founder of LLM-training platform MosaicML. Rao says copyright infringement could prevent companies from successfully monetizing AI. Rao, who oversees generative AI strategy for Databricks after it bought his startup MosaicML for $1.3 billion, likens it to the issue that crushed Napster, the 2000s-era music-sharing platform. "We build tools that enable companies to differentiate their AI from everyone else's and leverage their data uniquely," Rao told Insider. In 2023, I’m still building a non-streaming music collection, shelling out hard cash for what the streaming industry has convinced consumers should be free. I know it’s a privilege for me to pooh-pooh streaming — after all, for those with less disposable income than I have, it offers access to enormous music libraries at little to no cost. I was still using iTunes until 2019, when Apple decided to sunset the app and replace it with a new media player called Music (not to be confused with Apple Music, the streaming service). Once I add something to my iTunes library, I have it forever. at my college’s radio station, where we shared files and browsed the station’s racks for CDs we could rip, all to fatten up our iTunes libraries.

Interest in “Rich Men North of Richmond,” which was streamed 17.5 million times on services like Spotify and Apple Music in its first week of release, partly grew in the manner of a typical viral track, according to the service Luminate, whose data fuels the Billboard charts. Much of the consumer activity that drove the track to No. 1 came via 99-cent digital downloads from outlets like the iTunes Store — an outdated format that is declining in popularity faster than CDs. Despite streaming now accounting for more than 80 percent of music consumption overall, paid downloads are weighted more on the charts, a quirk exploited regularly by pop superfans devoted to acts like Ms. In often coordinated efforts, they use downloads to show support and earn chart milestones that are celebrated like wins in sports or political elections.

So, in November 2020, I dropped $299 on an Apple HomePod speaker to replace the records and turntable. I chose the HomePod because we've been an Apple family. The HomePod sounded great, working equally well across lots of different types of music — jazz, rock, hip-hop, '80s dance hits, ambient — you name it. It would often choke on songs that weren't available on Apple Music. I interrupted what I recognized as her AppleCare upsell pitch, thinking maybe I could get something out of the old HomePod before I sent it to the landfill.
