Amazon's cash balance is expected to reach almost $400 billion by 2027, far outpacing tech rivals. AdvertisementAmazon's ballooning cash balance is drawing Wall Street's attention. By 2027, Amazon is forecast to have almost $400 billion in cash, far outpacing its Big Tech rivals. Despite the "remarkable" growth in Amazon's cash balance, the company hasn't been as aggressive as other tech companies in rewarding shareholders, he noted. During an April call with analysts, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky addressed the question about shareholder returns.

Amazon abandoned its $1.7 billion purchase of iRobot in January after the FTC and European regulators raised concerns. Since peaking at $1.5 trillion in 2021, tech transaction volume has plummeted, dropping to $544 billion last year, according to Dealogic. Before the company announced its $27 billion purchase of data analytics software company Splunk last September, he said he viewed the risk as absolutely worth taking. Alphabet's last big deal was its $5.4 billion purchase of cybersecurity company Mandiant in 2022. Microsoft closed its massive $75 billion purchase of Activision in October, but it took 20 months and a protracted fight with U.S. and European regulators.

Critically, sales of Amazon’s cloud computing services continued to gain steam, growing 19 percent to $26.3 billion. Amazon Web Services has also become more profitable, with an operating margin of 35.5 percent, up from 24.2 percent a year earlier. It spent $16 billion on capital expenditures, including new data centers, expensive computer chips and warehouses to fulfill orders. While Amazon has become more profitable, it is having a harder time spending that cash. As a result, the company’s cash has grown to record levels, with $71.7 billion on its balance sheet at the end of the quarter.

The Fed and economic policy were top of mind this week given the central bank's Wednesday decision to yet again leave interest rates unchanged , as it has since last summer. This week included the conclusion of April's trading month, which marked the first down month of the year for all three major market averages. Indeed, some recent earnings reports have raised doubts about the economy, with brands from McDonald's and Starbucks evidencing signs of strain among consumers. While no new inflation numbers are scheduled for release next week, investors will see reports on March wholesale inventories, March consumer credit and May consumer sentiment from the University of Michigan. AI trade Though interest rates took center stage this week, investors also continued monitoring companies tied to the artificial intelligence boom amid the stocks' recent choppiness.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy on Thursday took aim at regulators who are increasingly blocking mergers, including the company's planned acquisition of robotic vacuum maker iRobot , which fell apart earlier this year amid antitrust concerns. "I think it's really kind of a sad story," Jassy said in an interview with CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin on "Squawk Box." Jassy said the move showed that regulators "trust these two large Chinese companies with maps of the inside of U.S. consumers' homes more than they do Amazon." As megadeals have slowed to a crawl, tech companies have made a flurry of investments in artificial intelligence startups, seeking to gain a foothold in the burgeoning market. When asked how Amazon is tackling returns fraud, Jassy said the company has teams charged with examining returned goods to make sure they're "appropriate."

This device initially caught the attention of senior Apple executives years ago, though they've disagreed over whether to continue with the project, Bloomberg said. AdvertisementIt also scrapped its decadeslong, multi-billionaire car effort, Project Titan, earlier this year, shifting its focus to building AI products. After Field left the company in 2021, Bloomberg says Apple's robotics efforts zeroed in on domestic products. One idea Apple explored was a robot that could do chores like washing dishes and be used for video calls. It's not yet clear whether Apple's robots will make it to consumers.

Amazon has started the year with a flurry of job cuts across a number of units including Twitch, Prime Video , Audible , and Amazon Pay. In an email to BI, Amazon's Amazon Health Services Senior Vice President Neil Lindsay confirmed the layoffs. Amazon.com Inc.'s proposed $1.7 billion deal to buy robot vacuum firm iRobot Corp. was given the all-clear by the UKs antitrust agency. The vacuum maker also announced it would lay off 31% of its employees, around 350 people, and that its chair and CEO Colin Angle would step down effective immediately. The fate of the deal was plunged into uncertainty after The Wall Street Journal reported that the European Union would not offer regulatory approval. The robotic vacuum maker has a market capitalization of under $400 million, following Monday's news and prior reports that the European Union would move to block the deal. In July, iRobot entered into a $200 million financing facility to fund its operations as a stopgap until the deal closed.
