Bernard Looney, the former chief executive of BP, one of the world’s largest energy companies, said Sunday that he would become chairman of a data center start-up in the United States, a move that comes amid a ravenous appetite for electricity to power the boom in artificial intelligence. The company, called Prometheus Hyperscale, plans to build a $10 billion data center on a 640-acre site in Evanston, Wyo., carved out of the family ranch of the company’s founder and chief executive, Trenton Thornock. The hope is to attract companies like Amazon, Microsoft or Google with mushrooming needs for computer power, Mr. Looney said in an interview. Prometheus plans to expand in the United States and internationally, he added. Artificial intelligence tailwinds could mean more gains ahead for Celestica , according to Barclays. The investment bank initiated coverage on the stock with an overweight rating, and its price target of $91 implies nearly 26% upside from Monday's close. Nvidia's stock rally has another 12-18 months left to go, according to S&P Global's Andrew Chang. The stock has at least another year of "strong runaway" amid big demand for its chips, Chang said. His comments bolster predictions of continued upside for Nvidia, Chang said in an interview with Schwab Network on Friday. "It just confirms our view that we have strong runway for at least the next 12 months," Chang said. Nvidia stock sold off in the weeks following its earnings report at the end of August, but the stock staged a fresh rally this week alongside other tech stalwarts including Oracle and Super Micro Computer.

Artificial intelligence is set to give the global data center market a major boost, according to Jefferies, and usher in a "new era of electricity demand." "As GPUs [graphics processing units] have become a larger part of the data center ecosystem and drive AI investments, demand for power and data center space has grown at a feverish pace," the investment bank's analysts wrote in a June 18 note. They noted that demand for data center space has increased between 10% and 20% each year for most of the past 15 years. As the data center market grows, so will demand for electricity, Jefferies said, naming a slew of beneficiaries in these segments and beyond. Among the "pure-play data center" names it likes are Digital Realty Trust and Equinix .

Once-obscure chipmaker Broadcom has enjoyed a record-setting rally that's pushed its market capitalization inches behind Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate and its portfolio of household names and economic bellwethers. When Broadcom hit an all-time high earlier this week, its market capitalization briefly surpassed drug maker Eli Lilly's. Broadcom's rise in 2024 is cause for the chipmaker to replace Tesla in the "Magnificent Seven," according to Interactive Brokers Chief Strategist Steve Sosnick. "Broadcom captures the whole zeitgeist of the moment right now," Sosnick told CNBC's " Squawk on the Street " on Monday. "It's an AI stock much more so. Broadcom posted earnings for the second fiscal quarter on Wednesday that beat analysts' estimates. It also announced a 10-for-1 stock split, set to begin trading on a split-adjusted basis on July 15. Broadcom reported $2.12 billion in net income during the quarter, or $4.42 per share, versus $3.48 billion in net income, or $8.15 per share, in the year-ago period. Broadcom said $3.1 billion in sales during the quarter could be attributed to revenue from AI products. For example, Broadcom works with Google , which partially designs its own AI chip called a TPU.

First Solar is poised for growth as demand continues to improve with surging electricity consumption from data centers acting as a catalyst for the manufacturer, according to Goldman Sachs. The firm raised its stock price target to $268 after First Solar reported another stronger quarter, which suggests the shares could log 50% upside from Wednesday's close of $177.58.
