According to some politicians and influencers, a small fish called the Delta smelt is to blame for the wildfires that have devastated the Los Angeles area this week. ), but didn’t care about the people of California,” Trump wrote. “The way that firefighting has traditionally been, there are wildland firefighters and agencies, and then there are urban firefighters and agencies,” she said. And sometimes the approaches are really different.”The “blame game” ignores the nuances of addressing urban fires, experts said, but it also spreads misinformation. Scoville added that the Delta smelt, in particular, has repeatedly been blamed by politicians, including Trump, for environmental problems in California.

The Summary Demand for water to fight the Palisades Fire led the community’s water tanks to temporarily dry up. Immense demand for water to fight the fast-moving Palisades Fire led all three of the community’s water tanks — and some fire hydrants — to temporarily dry up in the last 24 hours or so. Janisse Quiñones, chief engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, said the Palisades water system sustained four times its usual demand for 15 hours straight. According to the water department, crews trying to reroute water at one point had to evacuate because of the fire’s intensity. “We have three large water tanks, about a million gallons each.

Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles sought to deflect criticism of the city’s response to a series of uncontrolled wildfires during a news conference on Thursday in which she faced pointed questions about the city’s preparedness — and her own — ahead of what has become one of the biggest natural disasters in the state’s history. Ms. Bass dismissed a question about her leadership, saying that she was currently focused only on saving lives, and said any evaluation of mistakes or failures by “any body, department, individual” would come later. Ms. Bass was not in the city at the time; she had traveled to Ghana for the inauguration of that country’s new president and did not return to Los Angeles until Wednesday afternoon. The first question she faced on Thursday morning noted her absence, even as the city was issuing a news release warning about the fire’s potential. But later, she offered a glimpse into her own unease with the challenges firefighters have faced.

Honolulu (AP) — Investigators reviewing the emergency response to last year’s wildfire that killed 102 people on Maui said in a report released Friday they found “no evidence” Hawaii officials made preparations for it, despite days of warnings that critical fire weather was coming. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency didn’t immediately respond with comment. Maui fire commanders discussed the forecast, but “no evidence of pre-event preparedness plans by the MFD were produced,” the report said. Maui County and the state use private contractors to help fight fires with water tankers and heavy equipment. And despite the warnings, the heads of the county emergency management agency and the Maui Fire Department were off-island that day, attending conferences in Honolulu.

This is Street Wars, a weekly series on the battle for space on New York’s streets and sidewalks. Any New Yorker who regularly walks around the city quickly learns which sidewalks are a pleasure to navigate and which are more like obstacle courses. Some are wide enough to stroll two, maybe three people across. Some are so narrow and crowded that it’s easier to just walk in the street, despite the danger. He was able to track those factors using data from the city and images from dash cameras used widely by ride-share drivers.

To treat heat-related illnesses, emergency medical professionals in Phoneix started using modified body bags called "immersion bags," The New York Times reported. Quickly submerging a heat stroke patient in icy water is one of the most effective ways to quickly bring down the body temperature. In one case, it only took eight minutes to effectively drop the person's body temperature. Prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in excessive heat can cause heatstroke, according to the Mayo Clinic. Starting Tuesday, cooling centers — indoor, air-conditioned spaces for public use — will be open during the day in New York. At night, because heat can disrupt sleep, 60 to 67 degrees is recommended by the Cleveland Clinic. one of the deadliest wildfires in decades ripped through Chile’s coastal cities of Vina Del mar and Quilpué. Weeks later, some residents and firefighters questioned whether a lack of water to fight the fast moving wildfire contributed to the high death toll. Rodrigo Mundaca, one of Chile’s staunchest water rights advocates, is currently governor of the region where the wildfire hit. In march, Chile’s Congress said it would investigate the handling of the wildfire, including a lack of evacuation plans and lack of water to hydrants. And the country’s Ministry of Public Works is investigating specific complaints that Esval fall failed to provide adequate water to combat the wildfire.

On Sunday, crews in Memphis, Tennessee continued to work around the clock to find and fix broken pipes that were causing low water pressure throughout the system. Elsewhere, freezing rain, sleet and high wind gusts later Sunday would make traveling in parts of Kansas and Oklahoma particularly treacherous, the National Weather Service said. “With no additional replenishment of arctic air from Canada, a steady warm-up is in store for the mid-section of the country,” the weather service said. By the 1860s, as Davenport writes, “many of the city’s boardinghouses, hotels and businesses sat on dozens of unstable city blocks atop ‘fill’ or ‘made’ land,” as did the water systems meant to protect them from fire. “It was inevitable,” Davenport says, that “another ‘big’ one would strike the Bay.”On April 18, 1906, at around 5:12 a.m., it happened. An earthquake later estimated at 8.3 on the Richter scale convulsed the region, its epicenter some two miles out to sea. When it made landfall, as one resident claimed, it “was like the waves of the ocean”: The ground leaped and buckled; bedroom walls fell on sleeping occupants; facades fell off their frames and into the street. The worst was yet to come, however, as four days of fire ravaged the city, scorching a combined 500 blocks and leaving a quarter-million homeless.

There are a slew of users and uses that compete for curb space. The solution, some advocates say, is removing free parking and charging for spots based on demand. Free parkingThe root of the chaos at the curb stems from free on-street parking, critics say. Cities “squander curbs for free parking for cars because drivers are the people who show up at public meetings,” Shoup said. Smart loading zonesEven if cities managed their on-street parking problems for private vehicles more effectively, bikers, delivery workers, outdoor dining and other uses would still crowd the curb.

First, Mr. Manuel is not an “Obama appointee” but rather participated in a leadership development program run by the Obama Foundation in 2019. Noting high winds and drought, the company requested permission to fill a private reservoir for fire control, though the reservoir was not connected to fire hydrants. The water agency asked the company whether the fire department had made the request, received no answer and said that it needed the approval of a farmer who relied on the water for his crops. The company said that it could not reach the farmer, but that the agency approved the request hours later. The executive, in another letter, also wrote that “we would never imply responsibility” on Mr. Manuel’s part.

CNN —A state agency delayed a water management company’s request to make more water available to fight the devastating wildfires in Maui earlier this month, according to letters obtained by CNN. The agency told Tremble that his company first had to ask about impacts on downstream users, according to the letter. Tremble told CNN by that time, his company’s water system manager left the area to evacuate his family and other staff couldn’t be reached. In a follow-up letter, Tremble thanked the chairperson for the prompt response. “This deployment does not suggest that First Deputy Manuel did anything wrong.”The agency declined to comment on whether quicker approval of West Maui Land Company’s request would have helped firefighters.

He and an industrial designer named Colin Kelly came up with four prototypes called Splash Spots that have eye appeal. The Fire Department worries about low water pressure when hydrants are open, a potentially serious problem when a call comes in and fire trucks go out. Sprinkler caps, which firehouses can make available on request, cut the flow to 25 to 30 gallons a minute, by Kelly’s calculations. Splash Spots send out about half that, and unlike the Fire Department’s sprinkler caps, they can be turned on and off, saving even more when a sprinkler is not needed. “I was out for a run over the July 4 weekend, and I passed a street with a hydrant with a spray cap,” Gordon said.

Those winds also battered power lines on the island, and dramatic videos show lines swaying and being toppled in the gusts. Now, some locals are casting blame on Hawaiian Electric, the state’s biggest utility, for not shutting off power to high-risk areas – and claiming that its power lines could have sparked the deadly fire. State officials were well aware of the danger posed by downed power lines during hurricanes. A 2021 state report noted that “downed power lines” and “residential and wildland fires” were hazards related to hurricanes.
