A 56-year-old woman was killed by a falling tree while traveling by car in central Nantou county, according to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC). Strong winds from Kong-rey tore down a roof in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan on October 31, 2024. Kong-rey rapidly intensified to reach super typhoon strength on Wednesday as it barreled toward Taiwan after bashing the Philippines. Kong-rey is the third typhoon to make landfall on Taiwan this year after Krathon and Gaemi. After moving into the northern Taiwan Strait, the storm is forecast to head into the East China Sea and toward Japan.

KINMEN, Taiwan — Taiwan cherishes its freedom and democracy and no “external force” can change its future, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said Friday, visiting sensitive frontline islands next to China for the 75th anniversary of a key victory over communist forces. Beijing detests Lai as a “separatist” and views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, a claim he rejects, saying only Taiwan’s people can decide their future. The Kinmen battle was a rare victory for Chiang Kai-shek’s forces in the final days of China’s civil war. CNN —China flew a record number of fighter jets and other warplanes around Taiwan during its large-scale military drills on Monday, the island’s Defense Ministry said. No Chinese warplanes were spotted entering Taiwan’s sovereign airspace, a step that would be considered a major escalation. While not directly comparable, the spike in Chinese warplanes on Monday superseded the previous daily record in September 2023, when 103 Chinese military aircraft were detected operating around Taiwan in a 24-hour span. In response to the latest incursions, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said it employed its own aircraft, navy vessels and coastal missile systems to monitor the activity. SEOUL, South Korea — An 81-year-old South Korean fashion model fell short in her bid to become the oldest Miss Universe contestant after competing in the country’s national pageant against rivals old enough to be her grandchildren. Dressed in a beaded white gown, the silver-haired Choi Soon-hwa strutted across the stage and performed in a singing contest at the Miss Universe Korea pageant held Monday at a hotel in South Korea’s capital, Seoul. She missed out on the crown but did take home the “best dresser” award. Han Ariel, a 22-year-old fashion school student, won the contest and will head to Mexico City for the 73rd Miss Universe pageant in November. Choi, a former hospital care worker who began her modeling career in her 70s, was announced as a Miss Universe Korea finalist earlier this month along with 31 other contestants.

As things stand, Intel is the only US chip firm with plants, known as fabs, that are capable of making advanced semiconductors. TSMC is set to open a fab in Arizona next year, while reports suggest Sam Altman is seeking to raise funds to create chip manufacturing plants. Intel's customers in China include Alibaba and TikTok parent company ByteDance, which have been subject to scrutiny from the US government. "Intel's ties to key businesses in China are typical for a high-tech firm," he said. As Intel and the US consider plans to increase manufacturing capacity at home, the company's China ties will loom large in the global chip race.

During his tenure as CEO, Grove transformed the chip company into a giant of Silicon Valley that, during the 1990s, was as important to the PC market as Microsoft. Pat Gelsinger, who has led Intel as CEO since 2021, has enacted a sweeping set of new initiatives to turn the chip company around. Its Gaudi 3 AI chip, unveiled as a rival to offerings from Nvidia and AMD, is expected to generate just $500 million in sales this year. Meanwhile, Alvin Nguyen, senior analyst at Forrester, told Business Insider that this is a big public win for Intel. Gelsinger's second headline announcement was that the company is establishing Intel Foundry as a separate subsidiary within Intel, with its own new operating board and independent directors.

AMD sold off on its first-quarter earnings report due in large part to its MI300 sales guidance falling short of sky-high expectations. Nvidia remains the dominant player in AI chips, but AMD is continuing to carve out a lane in the rapidly expanding market. Among the highlights, Su said Microsoft has expanded its use of the AI chips for certain software applications, including messaging app Teams. AMD's data center business is now nearly 50% of companywide revenues, up from 37% in the fourth quarter of 2023. Within data center, sales of both AI chips and traditional server chips will grow in the third quarter, Su said.

The latest to get in on the act: Tesla, which is selling a $450 bottle of mezcal on its website. The election result was a blow to Modi, who has governed India for a decade with an increasingly firm grip. India watchers expect the country's new government to move slower on some issues following the surprise election result. NvidiaGoing up against Nvidia is generally considered a pretty bad idea for startups in Silicon Valley. But Silicon Valley often thrives when true technologists keep hacking away at something they believe in, even if everyone else thinks it's dumb.

(Photo by I-HWA CHENG/AFP via Getty Images) I-hwa Cheng | Afp | Getty ImagesChina's latest military exercises around Taiwan risk escalating cross-strait tensions — but war remains unlikely, political observers say. Beijing warned that the two-day drills, which continued on Friday, were aimed at punishing the island's new President Lai Ching-te for his "hostility and provocations." The drills are "legitimate, timely and entirely necessary," as acts of "Taiwan independence" in any form "cannot be tolerated," it added. "This pretext for conducting military exercises not only does not contribute to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, but also highlights its hegemonic nature," the ministry said.
