The scene would have been impossible to predict three months ago: a motorcade of black sedans pulling up at the U.S. Senate to deliver JD Vance and Matt Gaetz on a mission to flex their new power. Mr. Vance had been a junior senator from Ohio when Donald J. Trump chose him to be his running mate over the summer. And Mr. Gaetz, a Florida congressman, inhabited the right-wing fringe, shadowed by allegations of drug use and sex with an underage girl. On Wednesday, Mr. Vance, now the vice president-elect, returned with considerably more political capital, but also significant questions about whether it was enough to persuade his erstwhile colleagues to confirm Mr. Gaetz as the nation’s top law enforcement officer. The two men, who have campaigned together before, hunkered down for much of the day in the Strom Thurmond Room in the Capitol, an ornate conference room just steps from the Senate floor, as senators streamed in individually and in pairs.

Freddie Freeman played Kirk Gibson this time, lashing Nestor Cortes’ first pitch over the right field fence for the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history. Will Smith made him pay with a sacrifice fly to right field in the next at-bat to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Soto misplayed a Hernández triple down the right-field line, which Statcast estimated had a 5 percent catch probability. Then, in the eighth inning, Ohtani blasted a double off the right-field wall. For all of his offensive success, Soto’s biggest weakness remains his defense, which cost the Yankees in Game 1.

Cuba restored a trickle of power to its grid by mid-evening on Friday, officials said, hours after the island plunged into a countrywide blackout following the collapse of one of its major power plants. The Communist-run government closed schools and non-essential industry early on Friday and sent most state workers home in a last-ditch effort to keep the lights on after weeks of severe power shortages. But shortly before midday, the Antonio Guiteras power plant, the country’s largest and most efficient, went offline, prompting a total grid failure and suddenly leaving the entire island without power. For many Cubans, far removed from politics and accustomed to regular power outages, the nationwide blackout was nothing more than a normal Friday night. Russia and Mexico, which in the past have sent fuel to Cuba, have also greatly reduced shipments.

CNN —Thousands of Floridians hunkered down at home and in evacuation shelters last week as Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida’s west coast. She ended up going into labor that night as Milton made a devastating landfall and moved inland, Furnas said. The surging floodwaters from Hurricane Milton poured in through the windows late Wednesday and their refrigerator slowly floated away. Even after floodwaters subside, the stress and anxiety can lead to lingering mental health challenges. Storms can exacerbate existing mental health problems or lead to new ones. Concerns about the mental health effects of back-to-back disasters come as researchers predict more frequent extreme weather events. But research suggests the hurricanes will make people more vulnerable to mental health problems and likely make it harder for them to recover, she said.

At least five deaths have been confirmed in St. Lucie County on the state’s Atlantic coast, where tornadoes touched down. The city’s mayor told reporters that no serious injuries or deaths have been reported there in the wake of the storm. Ron DeSantis told reporters at a briefing Thursday morning. Search and rescue teams worked overnight to save families and pets, DeSantis told reporters. But residents in St. Lucie County faced an entirely different threat: fatal tornadoes that were “supercharged” compared to typical hurricane-spawned tornadoes, National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan told CNN Thursday. “Their whole homes with them inside were lifted up, moved, destroyed,” St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson said. The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office was damaged in Fort Pierce as Hurricane Milton crossed into Florida. “There’s no way we could have predicted this type of activity because this is just not precedented,” Port St. Lucie Mayor Shannon Martin told CNN’s Jim Acosta on Thursday morning. Throughout the year, Ukraine has lost a series of cities, towns and villages in its eastern Donbas region to Russia, typically withdrawing its troops after hard-fought battles that sometimes lasted for months. Marinka was the first to fall, a sign in January that Russia had regained momentum on the battlefield. Then came Avdiivka, an industrial city where Ukrainian soldiers had hunkered down in a dense maze of trenches and bunkers. Finally, this past week, Ukraine retreated from Vuhledar, a mining town perched on high ground that was a linchpin of Ukrainian defenses in the southeast. But Ukrainian commanders and military experts dispute that, saying that a more crucial fight is unfolding in the region that goes beyond simple territorial gains and losses.

For their part, the Jones family are considering their options when it comes to rebuilding their home and their lives. “It rained the next night, and they were terrified,” Kristin Jones said.

The plot to topple Putin

But it was only when Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine , in 2022, that Ammosov began to plot the overthrow of his homeland. As I found in months of wide-ranging interviews, everyone aspiring to a new Russian revolution grasps the seemingly impossible odds of their bid to topple Putin. Ponomarev — who was profiled last year in The Washington Post under the headline "Could this man bring down Putin?" Most applicants live in Russia, Sokolov tells me, but submissions have come from as far away as Uruguay. "I know a lot of good officers" in the CIA, Ponomarev told me, who "sympathize" with the anti-Putin insurgency.

The stagnation has resulted in a rise in "stuck" workers — frustrated employees who say they want to quit a job, but are staying put as the fear of a potential recession looms in the backs of their minds. Read previewSince late Wednesday, President Joe Biden has been hunkered down in Delaware, recovering from his latest bout with COVID-19. "It's like they don't know he's Irish," a Biden family confidant recently told the Post. And it comes weeks after Hunter Biden — who for years has been political fodder for Republicans — was convicted on felony gun charges. Biden has repeatedly reiterated that he has no plans to exit the race, and his family has stood with him on that decision. But should the president change course, the family would also support that decision, according to the Post.

Everyone wants Joe Biden gone. What if?’ We’re doing things the Democratic way. I went there growing up and have Proustian recollections of crispy French fries with vinegar sold on the Boardwalk. It makes me sad that Biden doesn’t see what’s inescapable: If he doesn’t walk away gracefully right now, he will likely go down as a pariah and ruin his legacy. The race for the Oval today is between two delusional, selfish, stubborn old guys, and that’s a depressing state of affairs.

White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates denied that information was being curated to avoid upsetting Biden in a statement to POLITICO. But the perception of a relatively restricted White House is apparently shared by other Democratic officials outside the building. "I think the Biden team is pretty insular and doesn't really care what anybody says," a senior House Democrat told the outlet.

CNN —Joe Biden’s family on Sunday encouraged the president to stay in the 2024 race and privately discussed whether top aides should be fired on the heels of Biden’s stunningly poor debate performance, which has thrown his campaign into turmoil. Biden’s family, including first lady Jill Biden, son Hunter Biden and their grandchildren, convened at Camp David for a previously scheduled get-together and implored the president to keep fighting in his bid for reelection, Biden advisers told CNN. Biden, however, is known for being loyal to and protective of his close advisers, and does not like to fire aides. The admiration and support that Biden’s family showed the president Sunday mirrored the first lady’s effusive public praise for her husband in recent days. The opinion of Biden’s family would be crucial in determining his political future – even more so than the president’s famously insular inner circle of top advisers.

In that debate, Trump repeatedly attacked Biden and consistently spoke over him, as well as antagonized the moderators. Leading up to debate week, Trump has downplayed the importance of preparation. “It’s very hard to prepare,” Trump told the Washington Examiner. This room is a sterile, dead room, which is I guess what they want,” Trump told the Examiner. “I assume he’s going to be somebody that will be a worthy debater,” Trump told the “The All-In” podcast.

Doug Burgum, a possible Trump vice presidential pick, tried to reset the balance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. Fewer voters worry about the cognitive health of Trump, who is only three years younger at 78. “He beat Paul Ryan,” Trump said, referring to the vice presidential debate in 2012 when Biden dispatched Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s running mate. There is growing speculation about Trump’s approach after his hyper-aggressive and angry performance in the first debate against Biden in 2020 backfired. Unlike Trump, who spent the weekend creating headlines, Biden hunkered down at the presidential retreat in Catoctin Mountain Park north of Washington.

Hospitals are overstretched as Palestinians die in Israeli attacks on the suburbs and tens of thousands of people have already fled. For Netanyahu, the eradication of the group that carried out the October 7 attacks may be a matter of political survival. • Can Israel — as Netanyahu vows — go ahead alone in an operation even the US has disowned? • How would a full-scale offensive in Rafah further hamper already faltering attempts to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas? Initially, Biden’s warning, delivered in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett in the swing state of Wisconsin on Wednesday, looks like a case of political whiplash.
