☆ Injured Montana man survives on creek water for 5 days after motorcycle crash on mountain road

BOISE, Idaho — A Montana motorcyclist who was missing for five days after crashing along an Idaho mountain highway survived by drinking creek water until he was found, authorities say. Demoss’ shouting went unanswered until Common caught sight of him while searching five days after the Aug. 11 crash. After the other travelers saw his motorcycle parked on the side of the highway, they stopped at the next turnout a few miles down the road to wait for him. Demoss never arrived, so his companions went back to check on him, stopping at the trailhead where they had last seen his bike. Neither Demoss nor his motorcycle was there.

With the pledge, Group Black laid out a plan to steer money to Black media owners and acquire media companies. Bough, Group Black's chief strategy officer, was a former Mondelēz and PepsiCo marketer who presented the CNBC reality show "Cleveland Hustles." Various outlets reported that Group Black mounted bids for media companies including the Sports Illustrated publisher Arena Group, the Paramount-owned BET, Vice Media, and Vox Media. Seven former employees described Montaque as an energetic leader but said he was ultimately ineffective in executing Group Black's mission.

It marked the first time a new execution method was used in the U.S. since 1982, when lethal injection was introduced and later became the most common method. The state had predicted the nitrogen gas would cause unconsciousness within seconds and death within minutes. After he had a chance to make a final statement, the warden, from another room, was to activate the nitrogen gas. And experts appointed by the U.N. Human Rights Council cautioned they believe the execution method could violate the prohibition on torture. Smith's attorneys had raised concerns that he could choke to death on his own vomit as the nitrogen gas flows.

I told my speech therapist that I was frustrated that I haven’t been able to write fiction since experiencing a traumatic brain injury — which means that I am still, after nearly two years, unable to do my job. Over 1.5 million Americans experience a traumatic brain injury each year. The toll of traumatic brain injuries and the mystery of how the brain repairs itself, or doesn’t, is still perplexing and under-researched. I had to invent a new process in order to tackle the project: ideas inscribed one at a time, thought by thought, sentence by sentence, on note cards, each composed over days, weeks, months. Once there was a queen who fell under a spell, causing her to sink into a deep sleep for a long, long time.

Alaska has created a custom blend with Portland-based roaster Stumptown to make a coffee that’s immune from the altitude-changing effects that airborne-served coffee typically creates, including tasting bitter and weak. The custom coffee, a first for a major airline, will exclusively be served on every Alaska flight, including its regional carrier Horizon Air, by December 1. Taste and smell are inextricably combined and people’s sense of smell is significantly altered in the sky. Alaska even taste-tested the blend with creamer and Biscoff cookies to “ensure the best combination.”However, the freshly brewed partnership with Stumptown means that Alaska is ending its decade-long partnership with fellow Seattle-based coffee company, Starbucks. NEW YORK (AP) — Historical novels by Jayne Anne Phillips and Paul Harding and Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s dystopian prison novel “Chain-Gang All-Stars” are among the nominees on the National Book Awards long list for fiction. The judges, who include authors, critics and booksellers, will narrow the lists to five next month, and winners will be announced Nov. 15 during a dinner ceremony in downtown Manhattan. The foundation also will present honorary awards to poet Rita Dove and bookseller Paul Yamazaki of the famed City Lights store in San Francisco. Drew Barrymore had been scheduled to host the ceremony but was dropped by the foundation after she resumed her talk show in the midst of the Hollywood actors and writers strike. The foundation has not yet named a replacement.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Charlie Robison, the Texas singer-songwriter whose rootsy anthems made the country charts until he was forced to retire after complications from a medical procedure left him unable to sing, died Sunday. Robison died at a hospital in San Antonio after suffering cardiac arrest and other complications, according to a family representative. In 1996, he released his solo debut, “Bandera,” named for the Texas Hill Country town where his family has had a ranch for generations. When he was approached by Sony in 1998, Robison signed with its Lucky Dog imprint, which was devoted to rawer country. Three of his children were with his first wife, Emily Strayer, a founding member of the superstar country band The Chicks.

Astronomy fans and enthusiasts from around the world travelled to Exmouth, a tiny beachside town roughly 1,200 kilometers from state capital Perth, to witness the total solar eclipse. Thursday's eclipse was a rare "hybrid" type, not seen worldwide since 2013. In a hybrid eclipse, depending on where viewers stand, the moon either blots out the sun, a total eclipse, or obscures the center while leaving a ring of light visible, an annular eclipse.
