Indigenous researchers are up against a ticking clock: Of the 4,000 Indigenous languages worldwide, one dies every two weeks with its last speaker. He leads First Languages AI Reality, an initiative of the Mila-Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, where researchers are building speech recognition models for over 200 endangered Indigenous languages in North America. However, first, he must overcome a major roadblock: There aren’t enough Indigenous computer scientist graduates — people who know the language and culture — to tackle these language preservation projects. “We only graduate one or two Indigenous Ph.D.s in AI and computer science every year,” he said. That’s where the handful of Indigenous engineers who do exist come in: They are leading organizations like First Languages AI Reality, IndigiGenius, Tech Natives and the Wihanble S’a Center for Indigenous AI to train Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian computer science students to preserve Indigenous culture and language.

CNN —The US Department of Justice threw even more doubt into a new way of paying for real estate brokers this week, raising concerns about a recent wide-ranging legal settlement. The new rules included in the settlement represented the biggest upheaval to the US real estate market in a century, sowing worry among real estate professionals. New York CNN —Yet another fast food CEO is stepping down. Subway announced Tuesday that its CEO, John Chidsey, will retire at the end of 2024. Chidsey, the first chief executive outside of the chain’s founding family, joined Subway as CEO in 2019. The chain’s store count is also shrinking, closing 400 restaurants in the US last year and finishing 2023 with the lowest store count since 2005. Incoming interim CEO Walsh is currently the company’s president of Europe, Middle East and Africa and also served as global chief marketing officer.

What the deal entailsThe deal stipulates a 60-day cessation of hostilities, which negotiators have described as the foundation of a lasting truce. On September 27, Israel killed Hezbollah’s long-time leader Nasrallah in a massive attack in the southern suburbs of Beirut, upending the truce talks. Since October 2023, Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel have killed 47 Israeli civilians and 31 security forces in Israel. Palestinians in Gaza are unlikely to find respite if a Lebanon deal is signed, according to a regional analyst.
