The world’s most remarkable tennis courts

But to American photographer and journalist Nick Pachelli, a tennis court is the harmonious union of surface, sound, and spectators, complemented by the natural elements and the inherent intensity of tennis. “Tennis is our only sport where the canvas on which we play can change so dramatically,” Pachelli, a former top junior tennis player himself, told CNN, highlighting each court’s “unique persona,” as he describes in his new photobook, The Tennis Court. During more than 500 days of travel, Pachelli visited over a thousand courts (of the roughly 200 in the book), crisscrossing more than 250 cities and towns in his pursuit of spotlighting the world’s most aesthetic, esteemed, and even idiosyncratic tennis courts. Reached by a few hundred steps, the tennis court at Hotel Il San Pietro Di Positano in Italy is between the cliff face and the pebble beach. The Courts at Borrego Springs in California describe themselves as 'four tennis courts, a clubhouse and a pool in the middle of nowhere."

"I'm happy that I managed to raise my level in important moments, except a game in the second set," Medvedev said. "It's great that I managed to still find in this tough match these moments of consistency, which is enough to win. The 10th-ranked German has lost three times to Medvedev this year but flipped the script in their last meeting in Cincinnati. I'm really happy with that. The Tunisian, who is looking to qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals, plays Marta Kostyuk in the second round.

Djokovic looking forward to Paris Olympics in hectic 2024

The world number one also made the Wimbledon final earlier this year, where he was beaten in five sets by Carlos Alcaraz, and he is in no mood to slow down. "It's going to be challenging for players, but my plan is to play the Olympics, because it's one of the most important events in the history of the sport. That's where you also represent the country and the feeling of being part of it is a huge honour." Djokovic missed Serbia's 3-0 victory over South Korea in the Finals group stage this week as he was travelling, but is likely to feature against a Spain side missing Alcaraz on Friday. Seeing the U.S. Open in an Unusual Light

The U.S. Open, which I have covered for five years for The New York Times, has no shortage of opportunities for staggering visuals. But the event is, and this will come as no surprise to anyone who has attended, absolutely crawling with photographers. All of the major wire services have multiple photographers on site, as do many newspapers and magazines from around the world. And while we all bring something different to our profession that allows us to make unique pictures, I am always thinking of ways to capture the event in a different light. And infrared is, quite literally, different light.

U.S. Open quarters would be a pretty good time to get him." In their most recent meeting, Djokovic beat Fritz last month in the quarter-finals of a U.S. Open tune-up event in Cincinnati that the Serbian went on to win by beating Carlos Alcaraz. Should Fritz prevail over Djokovic it would set up an all-American semi-final against the winner of the late match at Arthur Ashe Stadium between 10th seed Frances Tiafoe and unseeded Ben Shelton. The day's other women's quarter-final sees Czech 10th seed and French Open finalist Karolina Muchova facing Romanian 30th seed Sorana Cirstea. The size, shape and density of the sand make up the hardcourt surface and dictate the speed of the ball after it bounces. Of course, players are not always universally happy with the court surface choices made for the tournaments on the pro tours. The court surface used at Flushing Meadows is called Laykold, which is made by Advanced Polymer Technology, an international manufacturer of sports surfaces. The bounce of a tennis ball generally lasts five milliseconds, an instant that will determine how the ball behaves.

REUTERS/Mike Segar Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Carlos Alcaraz has already surrendered the number one world ranking and will be in no mood to give up his U.S. Open title as well when the Spaniard begins the defence of his Flushing Meadows crown on Tuesday. If Alcaraz can repeat as U.S. Open champion, he will end the longest drought of a successful men’s title defence at any Grand Slam tournament since tennis turned professional in 1968. With Alcaraz and Djokovic hogging the spotlight, Daniil Medvedev has been the forgotten man but the third seeded Russian remains a threat to claim his second U.S. Open title in three years. At 43-years-old, the seven-time Grand Slam winner is the oldest player in the women's draw.

Medvedev back in his element on U.S. Open hardcourts

"And what is funny is I love these long rallies, but I love them when the conditions are fast, because then other players can't handle these long rallies," he said. "When the conditions are slow, literally everyone can handle these long rallies because, well, it's like you have no other choice. Medvedev could encounter similar issues with the balls at the U.S. Open but the Russian will not use them as an excuse and is ready to make adjustments to his game if needed. I'm sure that when he started 17 years ago winning Grand Slams, everything was different. He was still winning," said Medvedev.

[1/3] Aug 18, 2023; Mason, OH, USA; Novak Djokovic (SRB) reacts after a point against Taylor Fritz (USA) during the Western and Southern Open tennis tournament at Lindner Family Tennis Center. There's still a fire going," said Djokovic, who won the Australian Open and French Open titles to leapfrog Rafa Nadal into top spot in the list of men's major champions. "There's still that drive and motivation to really come at the biggest events in sport and try to win, try to win titles and try to bring some good sensation to the crowds." HARDCOURT DOMINANCEIf the chasing pack feel Djokovic's days of dominance are numbered, the three-time U.S. Open champion's record on hardcourts should give them pause for thought. I think Novak can play much better than he did in the Wimbledon final.

Djokovic missed playing big US events and excited to be back

Playing singles in Cincinnati for the first time since 2019, the 36-year-old Serbian won the first set 6-4 against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who later retired with a back issue. "Winning it in 2018 obviously is a highlight for me, because it was the only Masters I hadn't won for years. "But I played well in the past and was really glad to have a chance to come back to the States. First match coming back," said Djokovic, who will meet fellow veteran Gael Monfils next. Swiatek won the U.S. Open in 2022 and last month secured her second consecutive French Open crown. "This year I feel like we had more time to kind of focus on the basics, more time to also play matches. She said she expected to be fine come Monday when Wimbledon begins and added that she was working on perfecting her footwork. "That's where my strength is on other surfaces," Swiatek said. "Yeah, I feel like if you have time to adjust to the surface and then use your intuition in matches...

Jabeur's season has steadily gathered steam in Paris after the Tunisian world number seven had minor knee surgery earlier in the year and skipped the Madrid Open due to a calf problem following her run to the Charleston crown. Pera beat Jabeur in their last meeting on the hardcourts of Guangzhou in 2019 but the left-hander struggled to cope with her tricky opponent's clay prowess and did not help her own cause with errors in her maiden last 16 appearance in a Grand Slam. Jabeur tightened her grip on the contest by blending power, precision and guile in the next set to close out the victory in just over an hour. So Grandpa Alcaraz (another Carlos) made sure to include those courts with the development. López Rueda is the tennis-mad chief executive of Postres Reina, which is based in Caravaca de la Cruz. But López Rueda doesn’t just like tennis; he likes to play tennis on red clay. One day López Rueda agreed to watch the boy play and it was unlike anything he had ever seen. Alcaraz became the first, wearing the company logo on his shirts.
Medvedev says 'unbelievable' Rome triumph among his best wins

Heading into Rome, Medvedev had won 18 of his 19 titles - including the 2021 U.S. Open - on hardcourts, with his Mallorca Open victory on grass the same year the only exception. The 27-year-old, who previously made no secret of his dislike for clay, was a player transformed at the Italian Open and ended the tournament with a 7-5 7-5 win over rising Dane Holger Rune. Asked where his victory ranked among his many successes, Medvedev told reporters: "In a way, number one, just because it's the first one on clay and it's unbelievable. Medvedev said using new strings this year had helped his clay game as they were softer and aided his deep groundstrokes. [1/3] Mar 17, 2023; Indian Wells, CA, USA; Iga Swiatek (POL) and Elena Rybakina (KAZ) changes sides in the semi final match in the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. But the Kazakh said French Open champion Swiatek would be a completely different prospect in the Rome quarter-final. Rybakina said she was not dwelling too much on the pair's budding rivalry. Poland's Swiatek, who won her first match with Rybakina in Ostrava two years ago, said she would treat their latest meeting like any other match. "For now I don't have any mindset," defending Rome champion Swiatek said.

[1/2] Mar 19, 2023; Indian Wells, CA, USA; Daniil Medvedev (RUS) hits a shot in the men’s final match against Carlos Alcaraz (ESP) in the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY SportsMarch 20 (Reuters) - Daniil Medvedev suffered double disappointment on Sunday after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final and seeing his 19-match winning run snapped, but the Russian said the only thing to do now was embark on another streak. That's actually disappointing," Medvedev said. "This would be cool to try to beat it and maybe try to prolong it as long as possible. I'm proud of it, and now it's time to try to build a new streak.
MELBOURNE, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Rafa Nadal will kick off his Australian Open title defence on Monday with a first round test against rising Briton Jack Draper as a new era begins on the blue hardcourts of Melbourne Park. The top seed has had only one win since September's U.S. Open and admitted his title defence was vulnerable to an early shock after two straight defeats in the lead-up. The reigning French and U.S. Open champion opens her campaign against Jule Niemeier in the first evening match at Rod Laver Arena, the German who gave Swiatek a huge scare in the U.S. Open fourth round. With American tennis looking for a new champion in the post-Serena era, Coco Gauff will open the day session at Rod Laver Arena against Czech Katerina Siniakova. Medvedev, the men's seventh seed, will return to the scene of last year's final heartbreak when he faces unseeded American Marcos Giron in the late match at Rod Laver Arena.
