The man accused of killing Laken Riley earlier this year "went out hunting for females" on the day the nursing student in Georgia was slain, prosecutors told a judge Friday on the first day of Jose Antonio Ibarra's trial. CNN —The man accused of killing Georgia nursing student Laken Riley on Tuesday waived his right to a trial by jury and agreed to a bench trial – where a judge will decide his guilt or innocence. With the prosecution in agreement, Superior Court Judge H. Patrick Haggard approved 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra’s waiver. Ibarra, through his translator, told the judge he understands he can’t go back and change this decision. Riley, a 22-year-old Augusta University College of Nursing student, was killed on February 22 while out for a run on the University of Georgia’s campus. Laken Riley, 22, was killed while on a jog at the University of Georgia's campus in February 2024.

CNN —In a matter of days, Oliver Anthony’s working-class anthem, “Rich Men North of Richmond,” has gone from viral sensation to legitimate country hit. “Rich Men North of Richmond” touches upon Anthony’s time as a factory worker in Western North Carolina, he said in the video shared before the song was posted online. Conservative media personality Jason Howerton said he has offered to pay to produce Anthony’s record and that Rich had agreed to produce it. (A representative for Rich told CNN on Wednesday that there “isn’t much to report on” about Anthony and Rich working together. For wardens running bigger and fuller prisons, letting in people and technology was one more avoidable security risk. The racial prejudice that underpinned the War on Drugs infected how a lot of prison music was perceived. Throughout the 1990s, a rising victims’ rights movement framed any creativity behind bars as a moral affront to crime survivors. Much of society lost interest in hearing the voices of people inside prisons, but they didn’t stop creating and often they used music as a form of resistance. There are hopeful signs that our prison system could return to seeing music as a way to maintain hope inside — and prepare society to accept the people they’re going to release.
