Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

CNN —It’s been more than a week since the looks created by makeup artist Pat McGrath for last week’s Maison Margiela couture show captured collective imaginations, and the internet is still abuzz. The legendary creative — deemed the most influential makeup artist in the world by Vogue magazine — transformed models into living dolls, complete with porcelain skin, pencil-thin eyebrows and strikingly shaded eyes, lips and cheeks. When I tell people I'm 41 and have never learned to drive, reactions vary depending on where they're from. I'm actually quite proud that I don't drive because I don't congest the roads and the environment. Forget turkey. And if we’re talking cranberries, we have to start with Ocean Spray’s canned, jellied cranberry sauce, that jiggly staple of the Thanksgiving table. Somehow this cylindrical blob of sweet, glistening, ruby tartness has become synonymous with America’s most gluttonous day. You know it and love it, unless you hate it, in which case you might use homemade sauce cooked with some of the trillion cranberries that the company’s owners grew. Either way, Ocean Spray wins.
