Opinion | The Year of the Dragon Plant
  + stars: | 2024-02-09 | by ( Bonnie Tsui | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
We call it the mother plant, and, like my gung gung, it’s always been there. My grandfather’s name was Suey Lin Dong; gung gung is Cantonese for maternal grandfather. As a gesture of housewarming, his own mother gave him a dracaena plant; with his attention, it bloomed, sprouted new branches, bloomed again. In this time of grief, we piece together the story of the mother plant. Dracaena comes from the Greek drakaina, for dragon; in some species, cutting the bark secretes a red medicinal resin, known as dragon’s blood.

This week’s recap is posting earlier than usual because the episode premiered Friday on Max. Season 4, Episode 5: Part 5She’s awake. After last week’s episode spend too much time fussing over underdeveloped subplots and supernatural occurrences, this week’s hour snaps to attention like a procrastinating student who had been putting off a term paper. Their only feasible guide is Otis, a cagey German heroin addict with scorched eyeballs who once mapped the caves. They manage to get to base of the cave, but it is on mine company property and the entrance has been blown to pieces.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

Food in video games is often referred to as a “consumable,” a resource that confers health or another perk on the player. But in Venba, a narrative cooking game, food is something more: It’s something to labor over, to infuse with rich emotions, to savor. In one scene, an immigrant mother cooks a meal for her son, expecting him home from university. Chicken drumsticks simmer in a sticky sauce; a whole fish sizzles in a frying pan; an unctuous golden curry bubbles. Despite Venba’s three-year development phase, this scene of prepared-yet-uneaten food made it into the final game essentially untouched.

In the United States, Walmart, Costco, Wegmans and other chains have also revised their self-checkout strategies. British supermarket Booths is removing self-checkout machines. Paul Melling/Alamy Stock PhotoCustomers at Booths also frequently misidentified which fruits and vegetables they were buying when prompted by self-checkout machines. Walmart removed self-checkout machines at some stores in New Mexico earlier this year. Costco said it’s adding more staff in self-checkout areas after it found that non-members were sneaking in to use membership cards that didn’t belong to them at self-checkout.

Folau Tone steadied himself as a gale whipped through his street in Lahaina. Trying to nail down the rattling tin roof on his family’s home, he gave up as fragments were stripped away. In West Maui, power lines were crashing down, and the electricity was out across a large swath of the island. Folau’s wife had already left for her job at a hotel, but their four children had stayed behind. She liked cooking in the open air and had long ago set up a makeshift kitchen with propane burners under a tent.

Tourists who pause outside Federal Hall, a Wall Street memorial maintained by the U.S. National Park Service, will find its neoclassical facade covered in scaffolding. But until July 22, the man himself can be found inside, fussing over his dentures, his sleep and his coming inauguration. “Oh, hon,” his wife, Martha, says. The project began when Marie Salerno, the chief executive officer of Federal Hall, and Lynn Goldner, a producer, were strategizing how to raise the memorial’s profile ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Where Federal Hall stands (the original hall was demolished in 1812) was the site of Washington’s inauguration and the first Capitol building.

Barbara Walters, the pioneering TV broadcaster who blazed a trail for women in a male-dominated medium, died Friday. “Barbara Walters proved to be the evolutionary step between Edward R. Murrow and Oprah Winfrey.”Barbara Walters interviews Ronald Reagan in 1980 for ABC News. NBCMcGee, who died shortly after being partnered with Walters, demanded that he ask three questions to every one of Walter’s in studio interviews. So, Walters started fielding interviews outside the studio, quickly building a reputation as an incisive and probing questioner. After nearly 60 years in journalism, Walters announced she was retiring in 2014.
If you want to get rid of credit card debt, start by avoiding budgeting gimmicks. Instead, stick to a simple three-step repayment plan. Most people with debt don't have a repayment plan in place, or even know how much they might owe, Sethi said. Add up your total outstanding debt balance across all cards, either by logging into your credit card account or calling your lender directly. "The most important thing is to make a plan with your debt, then to automate your money so it's getting paid off," said Sethi.

CNN —Even before their daughter was born in June, Aaron and Helen Chavez knew she would need heart surgery. Data reported to the US government shows that as of Friday, more than three-quarters of pediatric hospital beds and 80% of intensive care beds for kids are full. Federal data shows that the strain on hospital beds for kids began in August and September, which is right around the start of the school year in many areas. It may also mean children who have chronic conditions and need procedures or hospital care, but whose conditions are stable, may have to wait. She was very thin for a baby,” Aaron said.

When I had a baby, I thought I'd be prepared for the transition to working parenthood. It's challenging to reconcile my personal and professional identities, and I often feel I'm failing. Because my job allowed for remote work, I'd arranged for a nanny who had worked for a family friend to watch my son during the day. Instead, I told my husband that night on the patio that I was rethinking my decision to start working again. My husband reminded me of what I'd told him — many times — in the years before we had a kid.
