And when Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election, after Silver gave her a 71% chance of winning, he became the subject of much (misplaced) scorn. But the rest of the world wants to know who Silver thinks is going to win the 2024 election. It's no longer Trump's election to lose. And so if it's Harris 80/20 and Trump wins, or Trump 80/20 and Harris wins on election day, then that's running some career risk. With hindsight, do you make sense at a big company, or do you think you're better as a solo act?

That dependsMedia companies just finished reporting quarterly earnings, which showed traditional TV is still lagging behind streaming and digital when it comes to ad revenue. Streaming advertising was up 22% across media companies, and now makes up 18% of total advertising. Tech companies including Snap , Roku , Google and Microsoft each saw digital advertising revenue make a comeback this past quarter. Streaming advertising revenue jumped 70%, but the overall number is much lower — just $175 million.

After announcing Disney's plan to crack down on password-sharing in February, CEO Bob Iger finally set the date in a CNBC interview on Thursday. AdvertisementThe new password-sharing terms started getting introduced to existing accounts on March 14, but new subscribers have been subject to the password-sharing rules since January 25. AdvertisementIn addition to cracking down on password-sharing, Iger said Disney plans to make a number of improvements to increase engagement and cut down on marketing costs. Eventually, the company hopes to reach double-digit margins in streaming, Iger said. "Netflix is the gold standard in streaming," Iger said.

For over a decade, allies have chronically underspent on defense while the West’s adversaries modernized and bolstered their own military capabilities. Defense spending stayed low across the West not just because of budget pressures, but also because everyone – including the US – was frightened to provoke Russia. However, the nature of NATO allies’ support for Ukraine – much of it direct military support – has exposed the vulnerability that years of underfunding has caused the alliance. Fabian Bimmer/Pool/ReutersThis means that the challenge in front of NATO allies now is not just how can they meet the demand for weapons coming from Ukraine, but how do they reverse years of underfunding their own defenses? Some allies don’t trust that others will be quite so generous with defense spending if the Russia-Ukraine war were to end.

AdvertisementHe specifically referenced Netflix's password-sharing crackdown as one that had been "extremely" successful. Following Netflix's lead, Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ (all owned by Disney) also said earlier this year that they would limit password-sharing. Max accounted for a scant 1.3% of streaming viewing in January, behind YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, and others, according to Nielsen.

For 74 years, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has been America’s most important military alliance. Presidents of both parties have seen NATO as a force multiplier enhancing the influence of the United States by uniting countries on both sides of the Atlantic in a vow to defend one another. Donald J. Trump has made it clear that he sees NATO as a drain on American resources by freeloaders. In his 2000 book, “The America We Deserve,” Mr. Trump wrote that “pulling back from Europe would save this country millions of dollars annually.” As president, he repeatedly threatened a United States withdrawal from the alliance. Yet as he runs to regain the White House, Mr. Trump has said precious little about his intentions.

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares tumbled in Asia on Thursday following a retreat on Wall Street after big U.S. companies delivered mixed profit reports and Treasury yields added pressure on stocks. Exports rose 4.3% while imports sank 16.3% in September and the trade balance swung to a surplus of 62.4 trillion yen ($410 billion). A big threat for the global economy is what oil prices will do to inflation. It rose 2.6% after reporting stronger profit than expected for the latest quarter as its revenue rose after it hiked prices. In other trading early Thursday, the dollar fell to 149.80 Japanese yen from 149.93 yen.

The $15.50 per month price for Netflix's most popular streaming option in the U.S. will remain unchanged, as will a $7 monthly plan that includes intermittent commercials. The increase left Netflix with about 247 million worldwide subscribers, well above the 243.8 million projected by analysts surveyed by FactSet Research. Netflix has picked up more than 16 million subscribers through the first nine months of the year, already eclipsing the 8.9 million subscribers that it added all of last year. The crackdown also has boosted Netflix’s in another way – current subscribers can share their accounts with someone living outside their households by paying higher monthly fees. The higher prices for Netflix's premium plans also seems likely to divert more subscribers into the ad-supported option.

Netflix reports second-quarter earnings on Wednesday and investors will pay close attention to the streaming giant's crackdown on password sharing, as well as the recently launched ad-supported tier. Here's what analysts are expecting for the quarter, according to Refinitiv:Earnings: $2.86 per share$2.86 per share Revenue: $8.30 billionIn May, Netflix began alerting members about its new sharing policy, which prevents freeloaders from sharing accounts. Netflix saw its subscriber base rise weeks after the rollout, according to a report from Antenna. Investors will also watch for any details Netflix provides on its recently launched cheaper, ad-supported tier. During its pitch to advertisers in May, Netflix unveiled few details about its ad-supported tier, albeit enough to push its stock higher.

All of this turmoil will be on investors' minds as the media industry kicks off its earnings season this week, with Netflix up first on Wednesday. Netflix, with a new advertising model and push to stop password sharing, looks the best positioned compared with legacy media giants. At the top of the list is contending with Disney's TV networks, as that part of the business appears to be in a worse state than Iger had imagined. The labor fight blew up just as the industry has moved away from streaming growth at all costs. Last week's ruling from a federal judge that Microsoft's $68.7 billion acquisition of game publisher Activision Blizzard should move forward serves as a rare piece of good news for the media industry.

IBM's Red Hat has caused an uproar in the Linux community with its latest attempt to squash competitors like Oracle that offer clones of its flagship Red Hat Enterprise Linux software. Oracle has also offered its own version of RHEL called Oracle Linux since 2006, and Oracle and Red Hat have had an antagonistic relationship ever since. And, because that new, you-shall-not-share provision violates the spirit of open source (and some question if it also violates open source licenses), there was a predictable backlash from open source advocates. The core of it — known as the kernel — is built by the Linux Foundation, a non-profit that is separate from Red Hat (although Red Hat supports the foundation). On Monday, Edward Screven, Oracle's top engineering leader, published a blog post with head of Oracle Linux development Wim Coekaerts slamming IBM.

CNN —After nearly a week of mass protests on Reddit directed at its management, the company’s strategy appears to be simple: power through. That approach was reflected Thursday in a series of media interviews conducted by Reddit CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman. In response, some moderators have vowed to put pressure on Reddit’s advertisers and investors. Some 100,000 forums remain open, the company said in a blog post, including 80% of its 5,000 most actively engaged subreddits. In addition, one company administrator said Thursday, Reddit may soon view communities that remain private as an indicator that the moderators of those communities no longer wish to moderate.

Netflix Freeloaders Really Have to Kick In Now

A Netflix series spotlighted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Much now rides on the streaming giant’s ability to get something from your kid’s roommate’s brother. First-quarter results from Netflix on Tuesday were a decidedly mixed bag. But Netflix added only 1.75 million new paid subscribers during the quarter, which was 20% below what analysts had expected. It said subscriber growth in the second quarter would be roughly similar to what it just reported—less than half the 4.1 million net new subscribers analysts were expecting for the period.
Amidst reports of a migrant rush toward the U.S-Mexico border in March 2023, social media users have circulated a photo of a barricade along Israel’s border with Egypt claiming that it shows a fortified fence that Mexico has built along its border with Guatemala. The original photograph is more than a decade old and was shot on Feb. 15, 2012, in western Israel, along a 150-mile-long border fence with Egypt. She's paid off 75% of her student loans, but must return to school and add up to $15,000 more debt. I've been paying my student loans this entire timeI've never defaulted on my loans, even through the COVID-19 pandemic. One of my student loans was forgiven through the Perkins Loan system after I spent five years in the profession, but that was only $5,000. I could fall back on my husband, since he's wanted to help me pay off my student loans, but it concerns me. Folks believe the hype and the politicization of what it means to take out student loans, but I've been a law-abiding citizen.
Delta Air Lines plans to curb employee access to its plush and popular airport lounges next month, its latest attempt to ease crowding. "The employee discount on Delta Sky Club memberships also is discontinued," said the memo, which was seen by CNBC. Complimentary seats on planes are a major perk for airline staff, and they aren't just used for vacation. American and United say they aren't planning similar policy changes for their lounges, though carriers occasionally tweak employee travel policies. For example, those carriers paused certain employee travel perks to London over the summer due to congestion.
Germany calls for global regulation of crypto industry

FRANKFURT, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Germany's top regulator this week called for global regulation of the cryptocurrency industry to protect consumers, prevent money laundering and preserve financial stability. Branson said a "crypto spring" may follow what has been a "crypto winter" but that the industry that emerges is likely to have more links with traditional finance, further increasing the need for regulation. "Now is the time for serious cryptocurrency regulation," he said. Regulation of the industry has been loose and patchwork. Last month he said in an interview on the ECB's website that "not all crypto business models are serious".
ROME — If Italy elects the nation’s first female premier, will its women be delighted or dismayed? Should opinion polls prove on the mark, Giorgia Meloni and the far-right Brothers of Italy party she co-founded less than a decade ago will triumph in the Sept. 25 election. Nothing.”Meloni, 45, is the only main party leader who didn’t join Premier Mario Draghi’s pandemic national unity government in 2021. After populist forces, including two of Meloni’s campaign allies, yanked support for Draghi in July, the former European Central Bank chief’s coalition collapsed, prompting an early election. But she has snapped back at contentions that it wouldn’t be a victory for women if she becomes premier.
