11 Data Points and Discoveries That Surprised Us in 2024

11 Data Points and Discoveries That Surprised Us in 2024One of our most important jobs at The Upshot is to give readers a kind of journalism that wouldn’t otherwise exist at The New York Times — in conception, execution or both. Early this year, researchers shared with us the first school-district-level data comparing students’ test scores before and after pandemic school closures. We expected that students in poor districts would remain further behind students in rich districts, and that was generally true. Some of our research confirmed patterns that have been observed before: On average, voters appeared to select new neighborhoods based, at least indirectly, on those neighborhoods’ partisanship. But our extraordinarily detailed data also let us dig into the dynamics of the years between the 2020 and 2024 elections.

Roofing is also one of the fastest-growing jobs in the U.S., with nearly 15,000 jobs expected to be added each year over the next decade. She launched her own roofing business, B. Barela Construction, in February 2021. Her combined income from running B. Barela Construction and working in real estate is more than $70,000 (she declined to share her exact salary). Ahead of her fourth year in business, Tena says she hopes to scale the business into a full-time career. She attended Santa Fe Community College on and off between 1995 and 2002, waffling between entering business, law or real estate, but never finishing her bachelor's degree.

Key ports on Canada's West Coast, including its largest container port in Vancouver and the Port of Prince Rupert, were shut down by a labor strike on Monday. According to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, $800 million in trade flows through West Coast ports every day. Montreal processes 40% of all East Coast container traffic. Approximately $572 million in container trade arrives daily in the U.S. from Canada, according to U.S. Census data. A temporary loss of the Canadian West Coast trade gateway could push carriers to discharge import cargo along the already strained U.S. West Coast, said Alan Baer, CEO of OL USA, further increasing the dwell time of containers and elongating overall transits.

Keys to becoming CEO: Communication and curiosityOver the next few years, Homara worked her way up from being the office manager. Homara is part of the board of directors for the Silicon Valley chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction, and she's communications chair for Women Construction Owners and Executives. Women have made strides in the construction field since 2016, when they comprised 12.5% of the industry. For example, Homara says one of the biggest misconceptions is what construction is "dirty, dusty and heavy" work, but not all construction jobs are labor intensive. In 2020, roles like construction laborers, carpenters and electricians made up 3 in 5 construction jobs.

The workers, members of the tiny United Automobile Workers union founded just a year prior, sought to improve brutal working conditions at mighty General Motors, the world’s largest manufacturer. The UAW’s sit-down strike across GM plants lasted 44 days. The 44-day strike birthed the United Auto Workers union. The UAW is calling its new strategy a “stand up strike,” a reference to the sit-down strike that started 87 years ago, and has launched targeted strikes at selected plants. The sit-down strike also prompted unionization and a wave of strikes in other industries.

MOSCOW—Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree amending the regulations for Russians with a second citizenship to serve in Russia’s armed forces, in a move that could help bolster the ranks of the military as Moscow continues to pursue its military campaign in Ukraine. The decree, which revises the military service regulations adopted in 1999, allows dual-national Russians and those with permanent residency status in foreign countries to be drafted into the army for military service. Previously, only citizens of the Russian Federation could be called up for service. Nationals of any country can continue to serve in the Russian army under a contract in the ranks of soldiers, sailors, sergeants and foremen, so long as the individual isn’t under investigation, convicted or has a conviction that hasn’t been expunged, similar to the rules that apply to Russian citizens, according to the decree.
