HONOLULU — Snow fell on Hawaii’s tallest peak this week, briefly turning the mountaintop into a winter wonderland. The summit area of Mauna Kea on the Big Island got about 2 inches of white powder. But it’s not unusual for snow to fall at the higher elevations on Mauna Kea during the wetter, winter months. “Combination of cold temperatures and moisture equals snow when it’s below freezing,” Ballard said. Centuries-old stories say Mauna Kea is the first-born son of the sky father and earth mother.

La Niña isn’t here yet, but has a 60% chance of emerging through November, according to the Climate Prediction Center. While it’s still unclear just how strong La Niña will get, current forecasts favor a weaker one. That outlook could be change when the center releases its latest forecast on Thursday based on trends toward a weaker La Niña. CNN WeatherThis is due to the behavior of the jet stream — essentially a river of air that storms flow through — which often shifts north during a La Niña winter. La Niña had a hand in the extremely wet winter much of the state endured from December 2022 to February 2023 and during the wet winter before that.

Sridhar Ramaswamy, CEO of Snowflake and formerly co-founder and CEO of startup Neeva, speaks at the Collision conference in Toronto on June 21, 2022. Snowflake has spent the past seven weeks dealing with the fallout of a major cyberattack that compromised sensitive customer data at several of its clients. The data includes phone numbers, aggregate call duration and some cell site details, AT&T said in the filing. It is the most severe incident since Snowflake disclosed the breach on May 30, writing in a blog post at the time, "We became aware of potentially unauthorized access to certain customer accounts on May 23, 2024." Mandiant blamed the hack on a financially motivated group it calls UNC5537, with members in North America and Turkey.

I´m in my 30s, but I joke that I´ve been a grandma since birth. I'm an only child, and my grandmother raised me while my parents were out of the picture. My grandmother's house was on a peninsula, a seven-mile stretch of the Atlantic on the south shore of Massachusetts. I'd never been able to see my grandmother from the water and dreaded seeing her become a blurry speck on shore. I also don't trust myself to teach someone about the world when I´ve barely figured it out myself.

Data analytics software maker Databricks said in a statement on Tuesday that it's acquiring Tabular, a startup that helps optimize data stored in the cloud. The gesture could help Databricks more quickly bring out products as it faces competition from Snowflake and other entities. Databricks is paying over $1 billion to buy Tabular, Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi said in an interview. Snowflake was also bidding on Tabular, as was Confluent , a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. Focusing more on Iceberg tables might allow Databricks to take business from Snowflake clients that embrace the format.

The core of the unseasonable warmth spreads east on Tuesday to encompass much of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. A storm forecast to develop near the Great Lakes late Tuesday could unload rain and thunderstorms on much of the East into Thursday. Across the Midwest and Great Lakes, snowfall is a few feet below what’s normal by this point. Ice is also almost nowhere to be found on the Great Lakes. Close to 40% of the Great Lakes are typically covered in ice by late February, but total ice coverage was near a record-low 6% Thursday.

Democrat Tom Suozzi flipped a New York congressional seat blue Tuesday night, narrowing the GOP's already razor-thin majority in the House and boosting the spirits of Democrats fretting about President Joe Biden's strength in the fall elections. A centrist Democrat, Suozzi was seeking to get back the job he had before he left to run, unsuccessfully, for the gubernatorial nomination in 2022. Suozzi also faced an electorate unhappy with Biden in general and, in particular, the influx of immigrants over the border. CNN —Winter has gone missing across the Midwest and Great Lakes, and time is running out to find it. Dozens of cities are on track for one of the warmest winters on record, making snow and ice rare commodities. A classic El Niño pattern coupled with the effects of a warming climate are to blame for this “non-winter” winter, said Pete Boulay, a climatologist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Missing snowfall is even more pronounced in areas surrounding the Great Lakes, especially those that are typically buried by lake-effect snow. The lackluster ice coverage is part of a larger troubling trend across the Great Lakes.

Storms have walloped the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, Plains, South and Northeast with low temperatures, heavy snow, ice storms, freezing rain and high winds for the past two weeks. Tina Kotek on Thursday declared a statewide emergency following deadly ice storms. Trees and power lines already coated with ice could topple if they get more, the National Weather Service warned. “Stay safe out there over the next several days as our region tries to thaw out,” the weather service said. For Brendan Gibbons, snow rules the day. "I used to say, 'We'll get our snow," Gibbons, director of snow services for Palisades Tahoe, told Business Insider. "The entire business model and opportunities for profit are getting squeezed into a shorter season with lower quality snow," Mankin said. He worries that little ski towns will suffer the most as the climate crisis worsens and potentially consolidate into larger conglomerates. Winter turned its icy glare on the U.S. this week, blanketing cities and states from east to west with snow and sending temperatures into an Arctic spiral. Heavy lake-effect snow shut down city hall, canceled school in several districts and led to travel bans across multiple suburbs. Blades of grass hardened into icicles as snow fell and temperatures dropped in Houston, Texas. Pedestrians braved the cold while walking in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, and children sailed down snow drifts at the U.S. Capitol in Washington. And steam rising off of Lake Michigan in Chicago drew would-be photographers, bundled up and enjoying the view as winter settled in.

At 8 a.m. on Tuesday, a basset hound ambled through Prospect Park in Brooklyn in an extra-long turtleneck sweater. The dog’s ears swept the ground, which was covered in snow — real, fluffy, not-yet-yellow snow — for the first time in nearly two years. The hound was far from the only New Yorker strategically bundled against the cold. By early afternoon, what little snow remained clung to trash bags, and street corners were covered in gray slush. Finally, it looked like winter in New York.
