WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump announced Sunday that he has selected Brendan Carr to be chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Carr is the top Republican commissioner on the FCC, the government agency tasked with regulating radio, television and cable communications. "Commissioner Carr is a warrior for Free Speech, and has fought against the regulatory Lawfare that has stifled Americans’ Freedoms, and held back our Economy," Trump said in a. In his chapter, Carr suggested TikTok should be banned if it fails to disentangle from its China-based parent company — an issue on which Trump held conflicting views before he joined the app himself this year. "Congress should do so by ensuring that Internet companies no longer have carte blanche to censor protected speech while maintaining their Section 230 protections," Carr wrote in Project 2025's book.

He's the author of the FCC chapter of Project 2025, which hopes to cut Big Tech's immunity for content moderation. Carr's stance on Big TechIn his Project 2025 chapter, Carr writes that one of his four main goals for the FCC is "Reining in Big Tech." His interpretation of the section would give Big Tech immunity only against being compelled to take down content. AdvertisementHe proposed that Big Tech firms be compelled to make public their traffic and monetization algorithms, saying they now operate in a "black box." Carr's two other points in his Project 2025 chapter are to increase accountability measures for federal tech programs and to drive hard to develop 5G infrastructure.

The sewage is exposed to the air and causes a lot of nausea and headaches,” said Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA Ohio, a nonprofit group assisting Latino state residents, which has advised mobile home park residents who sued. It is very expensive,” said Yvonne Maldonado, a co-director of Manufactured Housing Action, a nonprofit group that focuses on such communities. “We have recently seen private equity enter the manufactured housing market," PESP housing research coordinator Madeline Bankson said. During hurricanes, the National Weather Service has said, 72% of deaths occur in homes, and of those, 54% occur in mobile homes. She also urged mobile home park residents to organize their communities and if there are complaints, to do it as a group, which is more effective.

Biden in 2020 did not gain ground across the country in as large a percentage of counties as Trump did in 2024. In 2020, Biden won Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the three former “blue wall” states that decided the election, by a combined 257,029 votes. “In 2020, Biden picks up everywhere. In 2020, Biden won only a little more than one-sixth of the nation’s counties, but the places he captured generated over 70% of the nation’s total economic output. Tech billionaire Elon Musk and his business empire stand to reap massive rewards if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House. Elon Musk joins former US President Donald Trump during a campaign event in Butler, Pa., on Oct. 5, 2024. “I love Elon Musk,” Trump said at a rally in July. It’s not clear how Musk and Trump would navigate the ethical questions around a possible government role for the tech billionaire. “He would be in much less trouble in a Trump administration because Trump shares his hostility to regulation and regulators,” Richard Pierce, a law professor at George Washington University specializing in government regulation, told NBC News in an interview earlier this year.

Vice President Kamala Harris proposed an initiative to expand healthcare in rural communities. It includes recruiting 10,000 more healthcare workers to rural areas and expanding their student-debt relief options. Trump held the lead over rural voters in 2020, gearing up for a fight this election cycle. According to her campaign, Harris plans to recruit 10,000 healthcare professionals to work in rural and tribal areas. The unprecedented destruction Hurricane Helene has wreaked on western North Carolina could take months, if not years, to rebuild. “We are always playing like we’re one point down,” a Trump campaign official said. A Trump campaign official pointed to efforts to expand the Trump tent with surrogates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Tulsi Gabbard and Iowa Gov. The Harris campaign also hosted community meals that fed 120 families, and it is organizing similar events, spending more than $30,000 on relief efforts. Ultimately, after Biden toured North Carolina, Harris visited once in her official capacity after she visited Georgia to underscore relief efforts.

Some of the victims of Hurricane Helene are cut off from the outside world. Two local television stations and two FM radio stations are also out of service in North Carolina, the FCC said. Internet providers often have disaster contingency plans, such as keeping backup generators and fuel on hand to keep service going during power outages. Companies that track internet connectivity say much of western North Carolina’s broadband internet speeds are slow and, in some areas, nonexistent. NetBlocks, a U.K. company built to track global internet censorship, said some cities and towns in the area expect severe to full broadband outages.

Boeing 737-790 aircraft belonging to Alaska Airlines is seen flying at Anchorage Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska, United States on July 2, 2024. Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines can go through with their planned merger, but they must maintain the value of their airline reward systems and preserve several key routes, the U.S. Department of Transportation said Tuesday. The two carriers' $1.9 billion merger agreement cleared the U.S. Justice Department's review last month. That put it in the hands of the Transportation Department, which must also review airline mergers. The Department of Transportation noted that the airlines can begin the process of closing the merger, but still need approval for a transfer application, which allows them to combine and operate international routes under one certificate.

Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

Four months ago, China’s leaders announced what seemed like a straightforward and proven plan to recharge the economy: Subsidize consumers who want to replace old cars and household appliances. Only 113,000 cars qualified for trade-in subsidies through June 25 — a blip in a country where monthly sales exceed two million cars. In 2009, the United States, Germany, France, Spain and Austria offered so-called cash for clunkers programs to revive car sales. They paid households to scrap gas guzzlers and replace them with newer cars with better fuel economy. China itself gave extensive tax cuts and subsidies for consumers to buy new cars and household appliances.

ALICE Americans make above the federal poverty level but not enough to comfortably afford all their daily expenses, often making too much to qualify for government assistance. The ALICE Essentials Index, which includes housing, childcare, food, transportation, healthcare, and technology costs, has risen by a projected 7.3% annually from 2021 to 2023; comparatively, CPI has risen by 6.1%. The ALICE Essentials Index for rural areas was slightly higher than that for urban areas, at 7.5% and 7.2%, respectively. The top reason for preferring their home country was "abundant domestic travel options," the survey found, followed by "too costly" international travel. Local tourism has been a bright spot in China's recovery from Covid-19 controls that ended in late 2022. watch nowDuring a public holiday this year from May 1 to May 5, domestic tourism trips and revenue surged versus pre-pandemic levels in 2019, official data showed. Local authorities said performing arts subsidies from the local governments helped generate 48.3 million yuan in ticket sales to 230,000 people, stimulating about 460 million yuan in economic activity.

But the business experience in the retail health clinic space has largely disappointed. Walmart and the problem of volume vs. priceIn 2019, Walmart announced a bold initiative to open 4,000 in-store health clinics by 2029. "Primary health care is a low margin business," said Arielle Trzcinski, a principal analyst covering health care at research firm. "Compared to what they see in traditional retail, health care is a fundamentally different business," Trzcinski said, citing the challenges of navigating insurance companies and administrative burdens that health care brings. In-store health clinics can be profitable and viable, and retailers are experimenting with piecemeal approaches tailored to the local market.

President Biden regularly emphasizes how the major pieces of legislation he has signed — the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act — expand opportunities for Americans. This is especially true for rural Americans. I am often asked if rural voters will give Mr. Biden credit for all that money and the changes it could bring, and will show their appreciation at the ballot box. My answer is that it is unrealistic to expect place-specific investments to have an immediate impact on elections. Rural places remain skeptical that federal policymakers have their best interests at heart.

President Joe Biden has sought to use his pro-environment policies to boost his support among young voters, but most of them have little to no knowledge of his administration's actions to tackle climate change, according to a recent survey. And many of the administration's climate policies are seemingly popular with the American public. The most polarizing Biden policy in the survey was the allowance of tax credits for electric vehicles, but even it had a plurality of support (43 percent) among respondents. Meanwhile, 35 percent of respondents opposed such credits, and 21 percent of respondents indicated they hadn't heard about it.
