AdvertisementThe AfroTech Conference for Black tech professionals debuted in Houston this year. The eighth edition of AfroTech, which lasted four days in Houston, held its place among one of the largest gatherings of Black tech professionals. AdvertisementMost of the attendees walked away with connections that anchor their experience as one of few Black tech professionals, if not the only one on their teams or at their tech companies. Many were searching for connections that could land early career conferencegoers their first tech job or a branch to pivot to new tech companies or into entrepreneurship. Her loss didn't seem to dampen the mood too much, but it has cast doubt and uncertainty as big tech companies line up to kiss the ring of the new administration.

In these conversations with patients who are wary of religion, Callahan slips in another detail: He’s an atheist himself. Callahan is one of a growing number of openly atheist chaplains working in institutions around the country. Though the term “atheist chaplain” might sound like an oxymoron, he doesn’t see a contradiction between his beliefs and the work of tending to the human spirit. Other atheist chaplains don’t shy away from religion at all, instead helping people explore faith and spirituality in nontraditional ways. There may be few atheist and nonreligious chaplains right now, but as Callahan sees it, their numbers only stand to grow.

If you're looking for a livable city with a lower cost of living that offers a solid work-life balance and abundant recreational opportunities, consider Portland, Maine. Portland earned high marks for both quality of life and location and community. Cities in this region generally scored highly on cost of living. In Lincoln, Nebraska, for example, residents enjoy a cost of living about 6% lower than the national average, RentCafe found. Next week's presidential election could have a big impact on municipal bonds, according to Morgan Stanley. In that case, the federal tax exemption becomes worth more, said Dan Close, head of municipals at Nuveen. However, studies have shown a move of just a couple percentage points "doesn't really move the needle" for muni demand, Brandon said. The TCJA increased the AMT exemption and raised the income level at which the exemption would phase out. That's because banks and insurance companies in the U.S. own about a quarter of all outstanding muni bonds, he explained.

CNN —When Israeli airstrikes began raining down on southern Lebanon, Kamel Ahmad Jawad’s first instinct wasn’t to seek safety or return to the US. On October 1, Jawad, a 56-year-old American citizen, father of four and cherished figure in the Dearborn, Michigan, community, was killed by an Israeli airstrike, his family says. CNN has reached out to the Israeli military, which said they could not comment without being given the exact coordinates and time of the strike that killed Jawad. But his American citizenship, his daughter says, does not make his life any more valuable than the lives of the thousands of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians killed by Israeli airstrikes. Before he was killed, Jawad sent his children a simple voice note: “Peace be upon you.

The move, experts say, isn’t based on medical science but instead on ongoing efforts from anti-abortion advocates to restrict access to abortion medications in states with near-total bans, like Louisiana. During a medication abortion, mifepristone is given first, followed by misoprostol one to two days later. According to the new law, it’s not a crime for a patient to possess the medications if they were prescribed to them. Hospitals don’t need to remove misoprostol from hemorrhage carts, the spokesperson added, or hesitate to administer misoprostol to patients experiencing health emergencies. The testimony “illustrated that easy access to these drugs can be dangerous to pregnant women,” Murrill said in the statement.

The Nassau County School Board did not immediately return a request for comment. The suit was among several that challenged the removal of books by school districts across Florida under a law signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis that made it easier for community members to challenge books they found to be inappropriate in school libraries.

A Harris campaign official said Monday she no longer supports a fracking ban. That’s the credo of Elizabeth Glaser, a public health nurse for the Indian Health Service, who drives thousands of miles throughout the Navajo Nation searching for community members with the infection. While other reportable sexually transmitted infections declined or remained flat during the pandemic, over 207,000 cases of syphilis were reported in 2022, an 80 percent increase since 2018 and the highest number reported since 1950. Most disturbing within this trend is the rise in congenital syphilis. Over 3,700 cases were reported in 2022, which is more than double the number of cases of mother-to-child transmission of H.I.V. To tackle congenital syphilis, we must cast off societal squeamishness about S.T.I.s and invest in proven control strategies: public education, testing, treatment and contact tracing.
