AdvertisementWho's going to win the streaming wars? Its would-be competitors are nowhere close. It no longer had the market to itself, and its flaws could no longer be covered up by go-go growth. AdvertisementThe best way to show how the streaming wars have worked out is via this chart: It shows you that Netflix stock is soaring. (We also threw Fox on this chart, even though the company has mostly stayed out of the streaming wars, though Tubi, its free service, is starting to gain momentum.)

Here's why European farmers are taking their anger to the streets:THE HISTORYPolitical Cartoons View All 253 ImagesWorld War II had spread hunger on a bountiful continent. When the war ended, Western European leaders knew that the way to people's hearts was through their stomachs. The vision of EU farming from early on was economy of scale — bigger farms, bigger holdings, setting standard rules across borders. “European farmers have found themselves under increasing pressure from many sides,” European Commission Vice President Maroš Šefčovič said. On Wednesday, the European Commission made two key proposals — one to shield EU farmers from cheap Ukrainian imports and one to sidestep an environmental measure.

Gucci’s Reboot Brings Back Old-School Cool

The headline was Gucci. Gucci is, in a way, the Ever Given of the personal luxury goods trade. With more than 500 stores worldwide and an estimated market value in 2022 of $35.3 billion, it is that skyscraper-size tanker, caught sideways. The entire fashion business took a hit during the pandemic and then bounced back, or seemed to, with a surprising resilience. The instincts that helped elevate him from journeyman accessories designer to star were already giving him the itch to move on.

‘Dream Scenario’ Review: Space Invader
  + stars: | 2023-11-09 | by ( Jeannette Catsoulis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Pondering the downside of notoriety and our willingness to exchange safety for fame, “Dream Scenario” is often funny and frequently surreal. Borgli’s previous feature, “Sick of Myself” (2023), also examined someone going to extremes to gain the attention she felt she deserved. Here, though, he has more ideas than space to execute them, and the movie’s third act can feel overloaded and indecisive of where it wants to land. The sight of Paul, in his shabby parka and scrubby beard, attempt to re-enact a young woman’s erotic dream — at her request — could make you want to put your eyes out. In the end, “Dream Scenario” is less interested in cancel culture than the fickleness of a mass audience that can rapidly swerve from adulation to condemnation — even when, like Paul, you really haven’t done anything at all.

Members of Congress are required to file documents disclosing their personal finances every year. But it's easy for them to push that deadline back — this year, nearly 60% of House members did it. Yet most House members didn't meet that deadline. Under current law, lawmakers are required to disclose their stock trades within 30 days — though violations of that law are frequent and often go unpunished. While several bills have been introduced this year to banning stock trading in Congress, the Republican-controlled House has yet to take action on the issue — despite House Speaker Kevin McCarthy previously expressing support for a ban.

UBS's Mark Haefele says there's a strong possibility the January market rally is a "head fake." But the rally has sputtered to a halt after US stocks sold off this week to erase half the gains they've made in 2023. "But it remains possible that the rally is a 'head fake,' and that economic data will ultimately disappoint." This may be due in part to a strong labor market keeping wage growth robust. And despite energy's astonishing rally last year, Haefele still believes that there's still room to go for the sector.
Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s announcement Friday morning that she was abandoning the Democratic Party to become an independent may require Democrats to modify their catchphrase. Her desperate leap out of the Democratic Party will someday make a compelling story for her book. In response, the Arizona Democratic Party took the serious step of censuring Sinema for her behavior. She’ll almost certainly need to fend off that challenge without the institutional Democratic Party resources she would otherwise have enjoyed. Her desperate leap out of the Democratic Party will someday make a compelling story for her book.
Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio listens to the opening remarks of Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi during the opening session of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia July 8, 2022. They picked unknown lawyer Giuseppe Conte as their prime minister, a compromise figure widely seen as a puppet, and installed themselves as his two deputies to dictate policy. In the last four years Di Maio gradually shed all his populist ardour, serving as deputy premier, labour minister, industry minister and foreign minister before eventually quitting 5-Star to form his own centrist party. Eugenio Pizzimenti, politics professor at Pisa University, said that unlike the more charismatic Salvini, Di Maio's support was strongly dependent on that of his party. ECLIPSED BY MELONISalvini's popularity soared during his government with Di Maio, which he brought down after 14 months in a failed bid to become prime minister.
At Nike's annual shareholder meeting two weeks ago, top executives once again defended the company's ongoing shift to more direct sales. Direct sales increased 7% to $4.8 billion in Nike's most recent quarter as it cuts down its reliance on wholesale. But yet another analyst is questioning the logic of the company's drastic pivot to direct sales. For decades, Nike largely operated through wholesale partners, such as department stores, sporting goods retailers, and mom-and-pop sneaker shops. At its annual shareholder meeting this month, CFO Matt Friend said the DTC strategy has driven a 2.6 percentage point increase in the company's gross margin in two years.
