There are talented politicians, there are untalented politicians, and then there’s JD Vance — I mean, he tried to calm the furor over his “childless cat ladies” remarks by feebly deadpanning that he’s “got nothing against cats.”Now he’s just gaslighting, claiming that Kamala Harris called for an end to the child tax credit, even though as part of the Biden administration, she of course supported a major expansion of the tax credit that greatly reduced child poverty but expired in 2022 in the face of unified Republican opposition. So how did this guy end up as the Republican vice-presidential nominee? Who’s his constituency? Despite the “Handmaid’s Tale” vibe of his views on women and reproductive rights, he doesn’t have deep roots in the religious right. And he’s a late adopter of the MAGA worldview, having once fretted that Donald Trump could wind up being “America’s Hitler.”Vance’s ascent has, to a significant degree, been powered by a small group of technology billionaires with Peter Thiel, who poured millions into Vance’s 2022 Senate race, at the center.

In “The Sportswriter,” the first novel in this series, Frank started out as a sensitive young literary man who had published a book of stories. Though the Bascombe novels are set mostly in New Jersey’s wealthier suburbs, they are, oddly, road novels. Springsteen went from “Darkness on the Edge of Town” to “Letter to You.” Holy moly. Ford went from “Independence Day” and “The Lay of the Land” to “Let Me Be Frank With You” and “Be Mine.” Good Lord. The Bascombe novels are road novels, as well, because they are set during holidays, when families are in flux.

Credit Suisse has been flailing for years, hurt by risk-management missteps that tarnished its reputation with clients and investors, and cost several top executives their jobs. The question on everyone’s mind is: What will happen to Credit Suisse, and who will be the next to fall? Fitch Ratings and S&P on Wednesday both downgraded the bank’s credit rating over concerns that depositors could pull their cash despite federal intervention. PacWest Bank (PACW) was down 12%, and shares of other regional banks fell again, too. Bottom line: Credit Suisse will probably need to be taken over (the most likely outcome, according to JPMorgan) or bailed out.
