On a Friday morning in late July, the New York Giants were deep into training camp for the upcoming season, with dozens of athletes hoping to secure one of 52 spots on the team. Across the street, at MetLife Stadium, Sean Stellato swaggered through the largely empty corridors, totally at ease. Naturally, Mr. Stellato also wore a fedora — his signature accessory. It was big and crimson, made by the Italian company Borsalino, which, he said, manufactures “the Rolex of fedoras.”He walked up to the stands: Section 109, Row 36, Seat 20. The exact place he had been sitting on Dec. 11, 2023.

Once, when my father was in West Virginia on police business, a man approached him and demanded to know about “rumors” that President Franklin Roosevelt was “crippled.” The man threatened to beat up my father or anyone who said F.D.R. (I have a picture of my father, in a fedora, guarding Roosevelt at a Senators baseball game, with the president standing up with the help of his braces to throw out the first pitch.) Like others around Roosevelt, my dad kept a tight lip about the paralysis of the president, who did not want to seem weak. With the help of a complicit press corps, a censoring Secret Service and a variety of ruses, F.D.R. was even able to campaign giving the impression that he was mobile.

It seemed like a classic John Ray news conference last month, with the flamboyant Long Island lawyer stepping up to news cameras, bedecked in a polka dot tie and matching fedora. Now Mr. Ray had something new: the police at his side. Mr. Heuermann, a Long Island architect and suburban father, was arrested in July and charged with killing three of the 11 people whose remains were found at or near Gilgo Beach on the South Shore a dozen years ago. As Mr. Ray detailed the claims, the Gilgo Beach Task Force, the team investigating the case, watched the broadcast and seethed. They had become used to Mr. Ray as a gadfly delivering barbs and brickbats with a flourish from his pewter-handled cane.

New York CNN —Hollywood writers and actors are going back to work after one of the longest strikes ever in the entertainment industry. Hollywood is in a rebuilding era — a painful, awkward transition fueled by tectonic changes in technology and consumer behavior. Strikes, while disruptive, were only a blip compared with the many other existential quandaries weighing on media companies. Cable TV sign-ups have been rapidly falling for a decade, and no one believes that trend is going to reverse. Netflix and Disney aren’t just competing against each other, they’re also competing with YouTube and TikTok and endless podcasts.

Harrison Ford has been donning the fedora and cracking the whip of the daring tomb-raider Indiana Jones for more than 40 years. The series' latest installment, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," leans on myths from ancient Greece about a device that can supposedly turn back the hands of time. Indiana Jones suddenly looked generations younger — perfect for the movie's opening sequence, set during World War II. Founded in 1975 by celebrated "Star Wars" creator Geroge Lucas, ILM — a division of Lucasfilm, which also produces "Indiana Jones" — is at the forefront of this new Hollywood frontier. One of the team's biggest achievements has been speeding up the timeline by which filmmakers can implement these tools, Bredow said.

Bottom lines are important, especially when billions are at stake, as well as the future of an entire industry. US physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer is often referred to as "the father of the atomic bomb." At once skittish and coy, self-effacing and self-aggrandizing, owlish and sexy, Murphy’s Oppenheimer is, at times, his own kind of super-powered being. A moviegoer unfamiliar with the particulars of the history here might be forgiven for wondering whether Murphy’s Oppenheimer is Obi-Wan Kenobi or Darth Vader. “Robert Oppenheimer can touch us still,” Kempton wrote, “because he was one of the few of those who have lived with the illusion of being history’s conqueror and the fact of being its victim.”I’m there for it.

J. Robert Oppenheimer watched the first atom bomb explode and thought, "Now I am become Death." That's right," Alan Robock, a climatologist and leading expert on nuclear winter, told Insider. The mushroom cloud of the Trinity nuclear test rises over the New Mexico desert. It was the first atom bomb explosion, ever. Similarly, the new film grapples with the question of how much Oppenheimer was (or wasn't) responsible for how the US used the atom bomb, and for the people it killed.

It's Harrison Ford's final bow as the boulder-dodging, whip-wielding, Nazi-punching Indiana Jones. On Friday, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" arrives in theaters, marking the fifth and likely final chapter in the Lucasfilm movie franchise. Previous Indiana Jones installments, released in the 1980s, saw significantly lower box office openings because tickets were significantly less expensive at that time and the films were released in fewer theaters. Despite a solid opening, the fourth Indiana Jones film tallied only $317 million domestically. The lackluster audience response resulted in a pause in future films, including the potential for a spinoff featuring Shia LaBeouf as Indiana Jones' son Mutt Williams.

But to be honest, it didn’t really make me feel like a dad, let alone the number one dad. Neither had I), I’ve come to see the old dad ways a little more sympathetically, and with some measure of recognition. Still, the touchstones of Boomer dad culture have outlived their descriptive usefulness for younger generations. What, we might ask, is dad culture in 2023? Finally, the new dad culture has definitely not found it necessary to put away childish things.

Read moreCANNES, May 18 (Reuters) - Harrison Ford was in Cannes for the much-anticipated premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" on Thursday evening, 15 years since the actor last picked up the adventurous archaeologist's iconic bullwhip and hat on the big screen. The newest movie's release date had been postponed several times after it had been announced in 2016 and follows 2008's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which received mixed reviews. The "Indiana Jones" franchise, created by George Lucas of "Star Wars" fame, has grossed nearly $2 billion at the global box office with four films and amassed a global fan base. It also inspired a TV series, "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles." "Dial of Destiny" is the first "Indiana Jones" movie the Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) has made after buying the distribution rights for the franchise from Paramount Pictures in 2013.
Raymond J. Johnson Jr. was a wiseguy, dressed in a zoot suit and a wide-brimmed fedora and waving a cigar in his right hand. “Ohhhh, you doesn’t have to call me Johnson,” he would say. Jr.“But you doesn’t have to call me Johnson.”And you can call his creator Bill Saluga. Mr. Saluga also played Johnson on various television series; on a disco record (“Dancin’ Johnson”); and, most memorably, in commercials for Anheuser-Busch’s Natural Light beer. In 1979, at the peak of Mr. Saluga’s fame as a comedic one-hit wonder, Tom Shales of The Washington Post wrote that “now everybody and his brother are doing Saluga impressions throughout this very impressionable land of ours.”
Called “The hat” because it vaguely resembles a fedora, the elusive shape is an “einstein” (from the German “ein stein,” or “one stone”). “I’m not really into math, to be honest — I did it at school, but I didn’t excel in it,” Smith said. “The hat,” however, is an aperiodic tile, meaning it can still completely cover a surface without any gaps, but you can never identify any cluster that periodically repeats itself to do so. How ‘The hat’ worksThere’s nothing inherently magical about “The hat,” according to Kaplan. “We’re not trying to protect it in any way,” Kaplan said.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Ankur Nagpal, 34, who founded startups Teachable and Ocho Wealth, where he is also the CEO. After I sold my first startup in 2020, I told myself I would never start a company from scratch again. People were setting up all kinds of business through Teachable — courses on computer programming and marketing, to dance, gardening, and yoga. But once I set that aside, I realized running Teachable wasn't what I was uniquely suited to do anymore. But six months ago I started Ocho Wealth, a service designed to help business owners and freelancers learn how to grow their wealth through educational products and financial services.

An aperiodic tiling displays no such “translational symmetry,” and mathematicians have long sought a single shape that could tile the plane in such a fashion. “I’m always messing about and experimenting with shapes,” said Mr. Smith, 64, who worked as a printing technician, among other jobs, and retired early. But he has long been “obsessively intrigued” by the einstein problem. And now a new paper — by Mr. Smith and three co-authors with mathematical and computational expertise — proves Mr. Smith’s discovery true. (Mr. Smith often sports a bandanna tied around his head.)

North Korean Parade Puts Missile Production Prowess on Display

North Korea has never showcased that many nuclear missiles at one time. The Wednesday parade suggested North Korea was expanding its stockpile of nuclear missiles that threaten the U.S. and its allies’ missile defense systems. North Korea has been developing solid-fueled ICBMs that require less preparation time to launch. North Korean state media didn’t report on any remarks by Mr. Kim, who has skipped speeches at previous military parades. “The main objective of Wednesday’s military parade is to show North Korea’s growing missile capability to strike the U.S. mainland,” said Park Won-gon, a professor of North Korean studies at Ewha Womans University.
