Mr. Gaetz, the former congressman from Florida who resigned this week, is best known for leading the effort to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, whom he still frequently taunts. He has also turned his megaphone on Republican senators who are now in charge of the effort to vet and confirm him. Given the G.O.P.’s slim Senate majority, Mr. Gaetz can afford to lose the support of only three Republicans (assuming all Democrats vote against him) if he wants to be confirmed. So far, at least five have indicated they are skeptical that Mr. Gaetz could win confirmation. Michelle Lujan Grisham said she will not renew a public health order that temporarily banned carrying firearms in public parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque, the state's largest city. Lujan Grisham said in a news release Wednesday that more than 1,700 firearms were collected in gun buybacks over the past year because of the order. So there’s no way we could enforce that order.”Lujan Grisham issued the temporary order, originally a 30-day ban, in September 2023 after an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed in an Albuquerque park. In addition to restricting firearms in public parks and playgrounds in Bernalillo County, it strengthened oversight of firearm sales and implemented wastewater testing for fentanyl in public schools. State Attorney General Raúl Torrez, a Democrat, wrote in a letter last year that he opposed Lujan Grisham’s decision.

Donald Trump may be regularly depicted as an impetuous toddler in chief, but he appears to possess genuine convictions about international relations. This impulse is not a new phenomenon for the United States; it dates back to World War I and World War II, when leading American conservatives praised foreign autocrats such as Kaiser Wilhelm II, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Francisco Franco as their ideological comrades in arms. During his four years in office, Mr. Trump blustered about alliances and praised foreign dictators but never actually upended America’s foreign policy. China is punishing citizens who can't repay their debts by cutting off access to social services. So-called deadbeat debtors are blacklisted, facing travel restrictions and government jobs. That means that delinquent debtors are restricted from accessing some services in the country, like high-speed trains and air travel. Unlike most other countries, China doesn't allow most people to write off their debts with bankruptcy, per the Journal. The worst offenders may face trouble getting loans and travel restrictions — similar to the experience of blacklisted debtors.

I have talked with Jewish people living outside of Israel who have said that their physical — and spiritual — existence felt vulnerable during those hours. Some were even surprised by the magnitude to which they needed Israel to exist both as an idea and as a concrete fact. “Uninvolved,” as Israel calls them in conflictese, the language with which nations at war deceive themselves so as not to face the repercussions of their acts.

No one could demand that Netanyahu accept a Palestinian state so long as that state would be governed by Hamas. There are older Americans who knew Israel when it was young. We only ever knew Israel as the strongest military power in the region. But we also knew an Israel that seemed to be trying to find its way toward peace and coexistence. They know an Israel that controls Palestinian life and land and intends to keep it that way.

Napoleon, played by Academy Award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix, is a talented young officer whose military victories quickly vault him into influence and power. The fact that Napoleon can’t live up to his own larger-than-life image is part of what makes Napoleon larger than life. There are obvious differences between Trump and Napoleon — Trump avoided the draft and was not a successful general; Napoleon was never elected and conquered large parts of Europe; Trump’s coup attempt was unsuccessful. “Napoleon” suggests that our fascination with grotesque populist windbags is itself a source of their power. Napoleon might not love this movie, but he’d surely enjoy seeing his face blown up there on the big screen.

LONDON (AP) — British filmmaker Terence Davies, best known for a pair of powerful, lyrical movies inspired by his childhood in postwar Liverpool, has died at the age of 77. Davies’ manager John Taylor said the director died “peacefully at home in his sleep” on Saturday after a short illness. After making several short films, Davies made his feature debut as writer-director in 1988 with “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” a dreamlike — sometimes nightmarish — collage of a film that evoked a childhood of poverty and violence leavened by music and movie magic. The film won the Cannes International Critics Prize in 1988, and in 2002 was voted the ninth-best film of the past 25 years by British film critics. The autobiographical films opened the door to bigger budgets and more mainstream films, still showcasing Davies' distinctive lyricism and often set in the 19th or early 20th centuries.
