“Do you think Donald Trump is a fascist?” Anderson Cooper asked her in a CNN town hall just two days earlier. They are indeed the ‘enemy from within.’”Former President Donald Trump addresses the crowd during his campaign rally at New York’s Madison Square Garden on October 27. As Trump’s 2020 campaign communications director Erin Perrine puts it, “Donald Trump is a political anomaly.

That turned out to be a very good decision: Yglesias says Slow Boring is grossing around $1.4 million a year, with limited overhead. Substack gives writers like Yglesias — and now, Taylor Lorenz — a lot of freedom and the ability to make a lot of money. Now, she's off to work on her own via User Mag, a new Substack publication she's launching this week. The Substack was an immediate success, and within a few months, Yglesias had 9,800 subscribers, paying him around $80 a year. That, after all, is what Project 2025 was actually meant to be. When he said, during his debate with Kamala Harris, that he hadn’t read Project 2025 and has no intention of doing so, I believed him. But Project 2025 — and much else like it that has gotten less press — is more than a compendium of policy proposals: It is an effort to build a deep state of Trump’s own. This is the problem groups like Project 2025 set out to solve. Behind the policy playbook sits a database of around 20,000 applicants ready to be part of the next Trump administration.

A few weeks ago, I started asking left-leaning people their thoughts on slurs being peppered into everyday conversations. An inclusive eraKayla Cash, a 31-year-old PR manager, grew up using words she now considers offensive. Some of the language felt ubiquitous; she remembers the 2004 release of "Let's Get It Started," the Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas hit that was originally released as "Let's Get Retarded." It was billed as discussions between two "bohemian layabouts" who called out performative aspects of progressive politics — while using language more often associated with the right, such as that offensive term for someone with intellectual disabilities. Looser language and new rulesEveryone I talked to for this story had rules for which words they would and wouldn't say.

Opinion | Kamala Harris Wants to Win

On Thursday night, Kamala Harris reintroduced herself to America. And by the standards of Democratic convention speeches, this one was pretty unusual. In this conversation I’m joined by my editor, Aaron Retica, to discuss what Harris’s speech reveals about the candidate, the campaign she’s going to run and how she believes she can win in November. You can listen to our whole conversation by following “The Ezra Klein Show” on the NYT Audio app, Apple, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube, iHeartRadio or wherever you get your podcasts. You know, Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. So I don’t think they gave her a very good hand to play. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters that you’re right and you’re able to prove it or bet on it in some way. What wasn’t in the Harris model that should have been?” “Yeah, maybe you really can meme your way to victory. And there’s something in it that I don’t think she can explain how she does it, but it makes her a fascinating leader.

Kamala Harris has a very different theory of this election than Joe Biden did. In 2020, and then again in 2024, Biden ceded the battle for attention to Donald Trump. Trump wanted the election to be about Donald Trump, and Joe Biden wanted the election to be about Donald Trump. In 2020, when Trump was the unpopular incumbent, that strategy worked for Biden. Harris has been able to do what Biden could or would not: fight — and win — the battle for attention.

Walz has overseen a significant push for new housing, including reducing regulatory barriers to construction, and supported progressive efforts to support low-income tenants and homebuyers. In May 2023, he signed a $1 billion housing omnibus law, which included funding for programs ranging from downpayment assistance to workforce housing. A city leading the country on housing policyMinnesota's biggest city — Minneapolis — has long been a national leader on pro-housing policy. A lawsuit in 2022 paused the policy's implementation until the Minnesota state legislature passed a law — signed by Walz — in May allowing the plan to go forward. Over the last decade, Minneapolis has constructed a ton of new and dense housing, which has significantly improved affordability.

Donald Trump has transformed the Republican Party on all kinds of issues — trade, foreign policy, immigration. To be clear, I think most of Trump’s policies and many of his stories are quite different, bad and often false. The world has changed, their party has changed, their voting base has changed, and so they need to change. The Democratic Party has been unified the past few years, but it has been unified against Trump, against MAGA. Brian Schatz is the senior senator from Hawaii and one of the Democrats doing the most work on these issues.

President Biden and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez agree on this much: It is the elites who are trying to take Biden down, ignoring the sentiments of legions of Democratic voters. I saw the elites propping him up, ignoring the sentiments of legions of Democratic voters. But the Democratic Party’s elites were in lock step around Biden. The White House and the Democratic Party apparatus it controls are powerful. “I would be crucified by them if I spoke out of line,” an anonymous Democratic state party chair told NBC News early this month.

This year’s Republican National Convention was Donald Trump’s third as the party’s nominee, but it was the first that felt like a full expression of a G.O.P. Speakers even made efforts to reach out to unions, Black voters and immigrants — imagining a big-tent Republican Party that could be far more formidable at the ballot box. But if the Democrats were running a strong candidate right now, no Democrat would look at that convention with fear. If current trends continue, Mr. Trump could rack up one of the most decisive presidential victories since 2008. The Biden campaign hoped to change this political dynamic by calling for a historic early debate in June. Of all the battleground states, Mr. Biden had been performing best in Wisconsin. However, in two polls released this week, Mr. Trump has pulled ahead of Mr. Biden. Republicans clearly understand that these three battleground states are Mr. Biden’s only remaining path to 270 electoral votes.

I predicted last weekend that the Democrats will find a way to jettison Joe Biden; that likelihood seems to fluctuate daily or even hourly, but for now my prediction stands. Because it is so obvious to me, I had long assumed the Democratic Party would consider it equally obvious. But it is no longer clear to me that the party’s elected officials actually share that assumption. But to the extent that goal conflicts with other, more mundane imperatives, more than a few Democrats seem to view beating Trump as a secondary objective. I wrote about this in the context of Biden’s “save democracy, vote Democrat” rhetoric before the 2022 midterms, but clearly the point merits new elaboration.

What I am hearing from congressional Democrats about President Biden is this: He has done little to nothing to allay their fears. The caucus meetings House and Senate Democrats held this week were an airing of grievances and despair, but they didn’t chart a path forward. What they need is a process through which they can gather the information they need to make a final decision. There are two main camps among congressional Democrats. Representative Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is among those who told his colleagues that Biden should step aside.

If Joe Biden steps aside for the Democratic presidential nomination — still a very big if — the favorite to replace him is Vice President Kamala Harris. In recently leaked post-debate polling from Open Labs, Harris polled better than Biden in matchups against Trump. But Harris hasn’t inhabited that political profile for years. And since becoming Biden’s vice president the conventional wisdom on her has shifted: She’s gone from rising star — many thought her “the next Obama” — to political underachiever. And are critics of Harris fair, or is she underrated now?

A CBS/YouGov poll found that 46% of registered Democrats think Biden should step aside. Yet Biden dropping out of the race at this stage is also a huge gamble, one that's fairly unprecedented in recent memory. AdvertisementHere are the most common arguments that people are making for and against Biden dropping out of the race — some of which, inevitably, may contradict each other. Why Biden should drop out of the raceThe debate was his last good shot at turning things around, and he failed. It's early, but polling so far has not shown a dramatic shift in the race since the debate.

On Thursday night, after the first presidential debate, MSNBC’s Alex Wagner interviewed Gov. “You were out there getting a chorus of questions about whether Biden should step down,” she said. The biggest divide in our politics isn’t between Democrats and Republicans, or even left and right. It’s between people who follow politics closely, and those who pay almost no attention to it. If you’re in the former camp — and if you’re reading this, you probably are — the latter camp can seem inscrutable. As the 2024 election takes shape, this bloc appears crucial to determining who wins the presidency. An NBC News poll from April found that 15 percent of voters don’t follow political news, and Donald Trump was winning them by 26 points.
