Railway workers in France rushed to wrap up delicate repair work on Saturday, a day after arsonists sabotaged three high-speed train lines and caused disruptions that have eased up but are expected to last through the weekend. The sabotage upended travel plans for over a million end-of-week passengers and caused chaos just hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Summer Olympics on Friday. The ceremony itself unfurled across the Seine River without any major issue other than pouring rain, allowing French security officials to breath a sigh of relief. “WE DID IT!” Gérald Darmanin, France’s interior minister, exulted on X, adding that “after four years of intense work to prepare for the world’s biggest sport event, we have never been prouder of our security forces.”

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Wind energy developer Orsted is writing off $4 billion, due largely to the cancellation of two large offshore wind projects in New Jersey whose financial challenges mirror those facing the nascent industry. Some projects already have been canceled, and many offshore wind developers are seeking better terms from governments with whom they have already contracted. Despite the challenges, some wind projects are moving forward. Orsted said it is proceeding with its Revolution Wind project in Connecticut and Rhode Island. And New Jersey still has several other offshore wind projects in various stages of development, with four new proposals submitted in August alone.

"On August 30, 2030 — my 100th birthday — I plan to announce that Geico has taken over the top spot, " Buffett said in his 2015 shareholder letter. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn his 1999 shareholder letter, Buffett credited Huggins' "fanatical insistence on both product quality and friendly service" for See's generating $857 million in pre-tax income since Berkshire took over. During the party, Dinsdale revealed he had attended a directors' meeting at Kansas Bankers Surety, an insurance firm that Buffett had long admired. "I'm now scheming to get invited to Jane's next party," Buffett joked. He illustrated the point in his 1990 shareholder letter, using a story about his granddaughter Emily's fourth birthday party a few months earlier.

Children receive first aid after they were rescued from the stranded chairlift, in Battagram, Pakistan August 22, 2023. "I can't tell you what we experienced yesterday when one cable of the cable car suddenly snapped and we were stranded in the air," said Faraz, who at 20 years old was the only adult aboard, and the only person with a cell phone. The journey by cable car usually took just a matter of minutes, whereas travelling on the rough mountain roads and tracks takes hours. "Our first priority was to secure the children," caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar said, describing the feat as "near impossible". Those prayers were answered for Faraz and the children.

That, you may recall, was when Donald Trump’s emergence as the Republican presidential nominee seemed like some cosmic joke. And yet some Democrats are again rejoicing at the prospect of Trump as his party’s pick. The stakes of a second Trump term are much, much too high to wager on his weakness and hope for his nomination. And the circumstances in November 2024 are neither predictable nor controllable — just as they weren’t in November 2016. If Trump is in the running, Trump is in the running.

LONDON, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Russia's defence ministry said it hit "all designated targets" in a massive missile attack on Ukrainian military, communications and energy infrastructure on Monday. Russia said the goals of the missile strikes had been achieved, in one of the largest coordinated Russian attacks against Ukraine since the first weeks of the war. Ukraine said the rush-hour attacks in eight regions appeared to have been deliberately timed to kill people, accusing Russia of terrorism. "Today, Russia's armed forces have inflicted a massive strike with high-precision long-range weapons against Ukrainian military, communications and energy targets," the Russian defence ministry said in its daily briefing. Ukraine said it was seeking a "resolute response" from the United Nations and the West in response to the attacks.
Leader of Italy's nationalist Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d'Italia) party and frontrunner to become prime minister Giorgia Meloni, holds a closing rally in Naples, Italy, September 23, 2022. Fast forward three years, and the nationalist leader is also poised to become Italy's first female prime minister. It is from tomorrow that we must prove our worth," the 45-year-old Meloni told party faithful early Monday morning. All the tough talking inevitably draws comparisons in the Italian press between Meloni and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Just as Thatcher shattered Britain's glass ceiling to top office 43 years ago, so Meloni looks set to follow suit in Italy.

The news of the great battle at Gettysburg came to Abraham Lincoln by fits and starts. But when it was finally confirmed on the morning of July 4, 1863, that Robert E. Lee ’s Confederate army had been forced to retreat, the tidings couldn’t have been more welcome. To a crowd of well-wishers who gathered outside the White House, Lincoln exulted that “the cohorts of those who opposed the declaration that all men are created equal” had at that great battle “ ‘turned tail’ and run.”Before month’s end, plans were developing to create a majestic national cemetery in Gettysburg for the more than 3,300 Union dead, with dedication ceremonies to take place on Nov. 19. The featured orator would be the august Edward Everett . But for the actual dedication sentences—a “few, appropriate remarks,” as David Wills described them in his invitation letter—the organizers turned to Lincoln.
